Anyone ever hear about the fantastic methane digester generators. It was seen that the amount of methane that comes from our sewers could generate large amounts of power. only you have to combust it to use it... Still as gas power goes its not bad...
What about using DASHER. I am yet to see the project bear real fruit-it works- but it needs to be scaleable as an overlay and support a greater character set. Its still slow- only 20-35 WPM -but better than scribble pads....
But there is no accounting for user stupidity. The user is probably just as likely to click one of those false security warnings on web-pages and give out the ir pin numbers.... In which case its not the OS fault and the stupid deserve to get burned... Its harsh- but they will learn....
Umm... $60/Yr is not bad... Consider this - how easy is it to find updates for windows 3.11 or 95? didnt think so. You had to buy a new OS. A new everything. There are models in open source for continuing upgrades. Yes a kernel upgrade is a bit painful. But less so than being made to pay $130(or more) for a new os, and reinstalling that. Updating a kernel is painful- I agree - but so is updating (or reinstalling regularly if you want some measure of stability for more than 3 months) windows.
Do it... Someone host it... and put the information on- from consumer product licensing costs, to server a per-head licenses etc... will look at it once I get the UPS for my server.....APache, MySQL, Php... Mmm...
I disagree with your reply being modded as offtopic given that you were making a perferctly reasonable responce t justify your karma whoring... We all do it sometimes...;-)
I find it fairly interesting that you work in the industry- maybe you could fill in a bit more on the usual "Disneyfied" versions of the truth. Saying that- NDA and all - I know I could give industry responses to gaming topics but nothing to specific....
In h2g2? I am not sure I get the reference but we are definately descended from golgafrinchans.. After all most of our politicians are middle men between the public and anything worthwhile ever happening to the economy, public services etc at all....
Umm- I thought that was exactly what was said in the artical.. Did you read and quote it? Or being a slashdotter did you automatically ignore it and go to straight to the forum?
The same situ here. When I switch to DSL(I moved and the address had a bt line instead) I opted for the self install pipex package. I am extremely wary about what I install. With Pipex- I didnt need to register MAc addresses or anything. I dont recommend the cable modem they ship - I bought the rather decent one from DABS with an onboard router and nat.. not bad for 80squids at the time.
This is funny as hell. Some parts of me says this is what promotes my flatmate (a gamer but not a techie) to say all prgrammers and slashdot users are elitist scum, which is an image I do not wish to promote. Yet I find myself compelled to agree that it could start to scare the illiterate to get with the program and start to understand the machines they used. Like somebody posted on a recent thread "Which self-respecting redneck would by an ut with an engine sealed in and unmaintainable?".
What the poster has said equates to saying the "One Man- One vote" rule is not capitalism - which is entirely true. The idea of capitalism is fair competition in an open market. Therefore microsoft are attempting a communist coup with their practices. "You will all pay the microsoft tax equally, you will all use our software."
Sorry to turn this into another microsoft dig- but I couldnt resist it.
"where economic conditions which in a capitalist economy would have been compensated for by a shortage of service instead resulted in the railways system being run into the ground unmaintained".
This describes to a tee what happened with the british rail system- run into the ground unmaintainted. ever tried to catch a train. Ever paid the excessive faires, only to be met with stinking dirty, crowded, late trains, running a bumpy ride on potentially dangerous tracks, with non-working signals, drivers that are so poorly trained that they miss the ones that do work, and a customer service blanket information restriction.
The wierd thing is- that happened after privatisation- which being the act of dividing the tracks among large companies(virgin for instance), is a purely capitalist method. Now I am to some degree a capitalist- I work as a pro-dev and expect to take money home for it- more than my local garbage collector does. I agree it has nowt to do with ethics or justice. The sad truth is that systems will be abused either way. The commune or the corporation would both be sucessful models if people were trustworthy... But how many of you would leave 5 grand on the side in your parental home? I bet most people dont even trust their family that much let alone someone else. This is the climate we live in..
Well said that man. Its meant to serve as an incentive for the authors/developers/inventors to create. But once a work is created it should not be held in bondage for all time. I certainly think that products which are obsolete and no longer sold should be released copyright free into the public domain. I do not necessarily mean the source code for programs(although that would be a good thing TM), but my favourite example is windows 3.11. Microsoft attempted (I dont know the outcome) Legal action upon a charity giving away old computers with windows 3.11 on them... WTF? Microsoft dont sell 3.11, and refused to sell licenses for it - however to run any of their more recent bloat you need a much more powerful and expensive machine than the charity was fronting. Of course one suggestion was to use an open source alternative to teach the kids instead - but it is the principle of microsofts sentiment that offended me there.
I imagine a good solution for reasonable copyright periods is the extended shelf life of a product. Once a game has gone through its platinum cycle, and is then relagated off the shelves to make way for other stuff completely- what use is it to the developers. They would have recouped theirs costs by now- and if they havent they have little hope of using the product to do so... So they may as well make it PD.
Sorry- thats my rant for today. Yes I do like freenet. And Gnutella and beleive in the free exchange of information. As a pro game developer and a hobbybist inventor I would like some remuneration for my efforts but there is a time when its time to let it go and work on something new! Surely thats half the fun- what can I do next(rubbing my hands together laughing like the proverbial insane professor)....
I knew that- but sadly I didnt when I opened it up, modded it, and when I finished with it used the z80 chip somewhere else.... Oh well...
If I had left the RML 380z unmodded it would be worth something as well... Sad really... I cant leave a machines innards alone...
Equally USB is more readily extendable than SATA, and would be tons cheaper given the amount of USB controlled devices on the market. Go XAGON. Unfortunately- the USB standard only delivers a 5v supply rail and a fairly low current(is it 100mA?). Drives use mechanical motors, which either need higher voltages at around 12v or higher currents. So you would still need external power. Wouldnt it be nice if there were 5v, 9v and 12v DC supply rails on a couple of the USB pins with a common ground. It may not hurt to allow a power-repeater int he USB Chain - which may act as device reporting back power stabilities in the line... Nice... Maybe I am just dreaming aloud here.
I take on board and agree with serial vs parallel arguments. I only use IDE on my desktop(not my servers) and because it is cheap.
PATA runs short on a few things- bulky parallel cables, lack of standardised connector locations, low bandwidth, limited drives per connector - they cannot be Daisy chained.
SCSI run short with bulky parallel cable, expensive to buy interfaces, cables and drives, drives tend to be noisy(although much faster) and heat up faster.
So SATA. It hot-plugable(one of SCSI's better features), its got high bandwidth(in theory only). It still has no standardised connector locations like SCSI- which would make hot swapping a whole lot easier. It still CANNOT be daisy chained, which means rats nests, and worse still having to buy another adapter card when you need more ports. It is serial- no bulky cables- nice thin ones. Which means less heat. The drives manufactured to run with it would need to be an extensive range from the low end-to the high end so it can be widely accepted in the user base and yet still deliver power performance when needed.
How open are the SATA standards? More to the point if controller chipsets are made-how easy would it be to make sure there are drivers which support them?
Dont get me wrong, I am looking forward to the future in serial drive interfacing (can you say firewire?) but I just have a number of requirements before I make an investment in a new technology.
Mine was a z80 - in fact the zx80..Although I had a periphery keyboard.Does any else here own an RML 380z? Or even a 480z? Better still does it work and do you have software for it?
DO it dude- bsod the shill... Then he can have all the fun of rebooting his XP box... Btw- Kornea- did you spot this guy is a MAC advocate not a linux advocate - or do you Microsheep bundle them all into one big enemy?
Dont forget - some more dubious celebs and movers use glass panes to cut crack... normally with credit cards/ business cards... Maybe that was being refered to...
Or the other more painful possibility of leaving a glass business card style computer in your back pocket, with much data, and sitting on it, thus lacerating your backside, rendering your machine useless and your data lost.... Its a future shock alright...
Still - imagine a computer embedded into a pair of glasses - augmented vision... Retina tracking.. Nice!! Run dasher and a few other items - it'd be awesome...
You never know - we could meet aliens with 12 fingers, and 16 toes. Then at least someone I know would understand imperial(note- I only do pubs in imperial).
Hmmm- Maybe the MPAA and RIAA could be implied here.... The register artical pointed out how much of a major P2P hub this segment was.

COuld that be a trio of beautiful, asian, goth-looking semi-naked(like some gothy stuff) chicks?
