"I doubt the BBC would leak it, after all they'd make more money if large numbers of people miss it when they put it on TV and are forced to buy DVD copies in the store to see the episodes they missed :)"

I don't believe you put much thought into this, or you where trying to be funny...hehehe. Sorry if I missed it, but back to my point.

I have heard a similar argument before, but think about it this way. If a large group of people watch the program on TV, they get more paid advertising, which generates more money. If they are getting lots of money, they will continue to make more seasons. With the big interest in TV shows on DVD right now, they would start releasing them on DVD while the show is still in production with new episodes. The DVD box sets will contain some extras and be far better quality than anything recorded off TV during the broadcast. A percentage of the people that enjoy the TV will purchase the DVDs. People that did not see the TV show during the broadcast will get interested with the DVD release and pick it up or rent it. They may start watching the broadcast now as well generating higher ratings which generates more paid advertising. As long as the broadcasts keep getting paid advertising the DVDs will continue to come out and new episodes will continue to be made.

The most profit will be generated by ensuring the longest broadcast run while releasing the season DVDs in a timely manner. With shows of this type that contain an ongoing story, the highest amount of viewer ship can be obtained by grabbing an audience fast and get them watching from the beginning. With a connected story line, most people will not enjoy trying to pick it up in the middle for fear of missing something important or not understanding what is going on.

By allowing people to watch the first couple of episodes (at least) at their convenience, you are supplying yourself with a better opportunity that more people will be will the show from the beginning. Especially with sci-fi, this is the best way to obtain loyal viewers.

If it is a purposeful leak, I think they did the right thing, and hope it goes well for them. Maybe they can start a trend and people will begin to notice that the audience wants more control over how they enjoy their media. You give your customers something they want, they will keep coming back. You try to force something on your customers they do not want, they will look somewhere else.

At least this is the way I see it, but then again, I'm not the one making the big important decisions at any of the networks.

Evil Dead 2 was not a remake of Evil Dead 1. When Raimi started working on Evil Dead 2 he wanted a brief recap of Evil Dead 1 to start out the new movie, but he discovered he did not have access to the video footage from Evil Dead 1. Raimi realized it would be easier to just quickly refilm the footage he needed. After a quick rewrite he now had the opening he wanted. At least this is how I understand the situation after reading and listening to interviews from Raimi and Campbell for years.

I'm making this plea to the porn industry to use their powers for good. Children are observing your product regardless if they should or not. You should include more examples of good and bad, right and wrong into your products. I would like to see a display of morals and use your products to teach our children. Does this example make it obvious enough how ignorant some of this stuff is getting? Some games are made for adults. Just because some get gets a hold of it, doesn't mean the creators should be "looking out for the children". It's not intended for their hands anyway. Blame the parents for not knowing what their children are doing or blame it on the fact that they are children and will do pretty much anything you tell them not to. It's not the game makers responsibility to censor their own creations because little Timmy might sneak off and play an M rated game.

But you can't always base a game on what could be, you must base the game on what they actaully offer you. KOTOR does have a far more linear storyline than say Morrowind, but I see it as a linear storyline with a lot of leeway. Personally, I would rather have the freedoms to explore and experiment than be locked into a set path for the entire game like so many eastern rpgs limit you to. Sure, some eastern rpgs offer great stories but they have little to no freedom or differences to experience on repeated playings. Keep in mind, the freedom that is being displayed in current games is a fairly new thing and will only get better. Personally, I can't wait to see what is possible and, same as you, I have high expectations for Fable.

  14. Interactive movies on RPGs - East Versus West? · · Score: 2, Insightful

As someone else said, to many rpgs are nothing more than interactive movies to me, and most seem to have very little on the interactive side. I've always been one of those few final fantasy haters and with each release my hate for them just seemed to get worse. 20mins of movie, 5mins of game play. This does not appeal to me at all. To many action games are taking this idea way to far as well (Metal Gear Solid 2), but thats another story. When I play a game, I want to play a game, not watch a movie. Now don't get me wrong, I have no problem with well placed video sequences to progress the story or even for cool "WOW, LOOK AT THAT" scense, but when the majority of the game revolves around this, I just can't handle it. I guess the first rpg that really got me interested was Morrowind. The sheer freedom was amazing. Right now I'm addicted to Knights of the Old Republic. Great game, and even though there is quite a bit of video, it's short, revolves directly around the choices you have made and don't seem to try to take over the game. The final fantasy series and similar games just seem to be pretty video first, every thing else last, at least in for me. Release it as a movie and I'll watch, but surounded in short, random game elements, I'm not interested.

I've found it's like this in quite a large section of the US.

  16. Where is the inspiration? on Graphics Do Not Gameplay Make? · · Score: 4, Insightful

It seems that most of the news games are all visuals, no inspiration. There are a few that manage to achive both (GTA3, Halo, Morrowind), but then again, I wouldn't say any of these had "great" graphics, but they were great games. They were fun enough that you wanted to keep playing, they had enough depth that kept bringing you back and simply by playing them you can tell that there was alot of inspiration and love for the game from the makers.

Think back to the days of NES and SNES. There were all kinds of crazy ideas for games. Yeh, I know, a bunch of them sucked. But many of those crazy ideas changed video games forever. Back then you really didn't have to worry about graphics so you had to either make it fun, different, or just so crazy that people couldn't ignore it. Now we just have a bunch of people running around trying to make the prettiest graphics. It got old really quick with me...I'm just wondering how long it will take everyone else to get tired of it as well.

Give me back the days were people make games that are fun, games they would actually want to play, not just games that fit the pattern of money makers.

Realistically, they are not mature enough to make those kinds of decisions for themselves. I do not consider that a freedom of speech. It is infringing on the rights of children, hurting children, and should be illegal. As far as freedom of speech, I'm all for it and defend it, but that has nothing to do with the spread of free speech, ideas, or thought. It's simply praying on the defenseless.

It's modded funny, but there is a good idea deep in there. I've basically been thinking about this idea for years. Not quite like a card catalog system as he described, but more like an ever changing directory. Of course it would require quite a bit of man hours to oranize/update/arrange, not to mention linking to the many many different categories and sections one page could belong to. Every day I run into something that I need to search for, but don't really know what exactlly to search for or where to go. I get lots of similar links but it usualy takes about an hour to narow them down to something usefull. I admit, this is part of the greatness of the internet, bucause quite often in this hour search I find valuable information that I need that I wasn't even looking for or stuble upon something that I didn't even know was out there. All of the sites that attempt to do this now are very limited and usually laid out quite poorly. It would be a massive project, but I think it would be quite usefull.
