    I used to spend all day, every day, paring wood with a chisel. The first couple of weeks into my apprenticeship I had calluses on my hands, my arms ached, my feet were sore and my back felt like I'd been standing all day. After that I never felt sore again from a good days graft.

    These days I sit at a screen all day. My back aches, shoulder hurts and the pain in my fingers never seems to go away.

    These touch screen tables sound fantastic to me.

    I have a Greasemonkey script to disable this highly annoying feature that so many websites like to use.

    Some of us, most of us on laptops, like to use the keyboard for browsing. The spacebar is used as page-down. Shift+space to go the other way. Arrow keys for smaller scrolls.

    I suppose NoScript blocks this action too...

    VM tells me I'm getting 50mbit soon...

    The only time I get the full 20mbit is on Astraweb's european Usenet server, wherever that is. Even then I need 30 odd [SSL] connections and it's probably more like 18.5mbits. This is during peeks times btw.

    I get very few internet problems with VM. Rebooting the modem and router solves most of them - I do that weekly out of habit. Only had one 2 hour outage in the last 12 months.

    Now their HD content; I could rant about the lack of that for a while...

    Demos alone on XBOX Live hit 2gb, 3gb even 4gb. I was like a kid with a new toy when I got my 360 in January. 10gb of demos a week easy.

    Phorm doesn't work like that though.

    <img src="http://phorm.com/advert.jpg> will work however they choose to 'encode' it.

    I hate the thought of Phorm as much as the next person but they are no different from any other banner ad pusher except they have access to all your clicks.

    And you can opt-out!!! *haha* I know, I know.

    I knew this. I spout it occasionally. No one likes to listen, especially my black mates after they start their chip-on-the-shoulder rants. People can't seem to understand that a small handful of English would have been easily overrun by masses of Africans. Without the help of the Africans, the slave trade wouldn't have happened.

    You can sort of do that in the prefs. There is something like a new user modifier. Set yours to 75% -5 and you'll never read my comments again.

    I think you'd miss some comedy gems though.

    Interesting.

    I had to hold down my 3 year old daughter while they stuck a needle in her spine. This is a standard test for meningitis.

    If I could have made her relax, or even taken the needle myself, I would have done it. The memory haunts me to this day.

    She had a bladder infection, thank fuck.

    About $0.15 for each episode from Usenet on a pay-for-the-bandwidth-you-use package. SSL connections all round.

    If you play with fire (BitTorrent) expect to get burnt.

    Startup times on GTs are not quick. Try 2 hours for a cold start on an ultra-modern CCGT. That's two hours to achieve full load from cold.

    A warm start, after being off for 2-3 days, takes about 90 minutes.

    A hot start, after being off for 8 hours, will take about 30-40 minutes.

    Hydro, and the like, can be brought online quickly - I have no figures here on extact times. Gas cannot.

    30 mph is 44 feet per second.

    Stopping distance at 30 mph, as quoted by the UK Highway code, is 75 feet. These distances were set many, many years ago and are very conservative.

    2 seconds is plenty of time to stop if you are paying attention to the road and its conditions.

    I prefer metric. :)
