Are you kidding? Space is OFTEN about "good enough." Weight is at a premium.

In the lunar lander for Apollo, you could puncture a hole clear through the hull by dropping your screwdriver. In some places it was as thin as several stacked sheets of aluminum foil. It held in the oxygen so it was "good enough."

Looking at the shuttle, there are many places where they settled on "good enough." In fact, you could say the entire design was a "good enough" compromise from the SSTO concepts they had started out with. And frankly, in a lot of ways, the shuttle turned out not to have been good enough at all.

Yes, you can argue that fascists want conformity - but these people were not "conforming" by weariong matching clothes, they were doing something a bit out of the ordinary and unexpect - thereby NOT conforming... and their lack of conformity is what the parent poster felt was grounds for imprisonment.

As others have pointed out, the ingredients may be public, but the ratio is still secret, etc.

Which points out yet another flaw with the current patent system - the whole intent of patents was to encourage people to make their inventions known, so that once they expire the knowledge becomes public domain. Here, with humble little play-doh, we have an example of that intent not working, being evaded - the patent was granted, and has expired, yet nobody knows the formula... perfect Playdoh making has NOT become something anyone can do, and the stuff has not become a generic commodity as patent law intended. Playdoh got a patent without really truly revealing their invention, and now still gets to maintain its secret.

Play-doh got a 20 year free ride, essentially having ripped off the public.
