a friend and i just started renting a dedicated box there a month ago... i am disgusted to think that my money is going to support SCO, and i am now looking for another host. any suggestions for dedicated freebsd boxes? (paying ~$150/mo now)
the worst team lead is one who thinks they can do it all. a team lead should not try to do too much technical work themselves, but be able to spread work around to different members on his team depending on their skills and load, etc. a team leader also has to respect the opinions of the people on his team... i had a team lead that didn't do either of these, and took it upon himself to design a project himself and then not take any input from the team. team leaders should not be the star.
drm is all about greed -- why let people pay for something once they may use often? why not essentially rent everything instead of selling it. the difference being that the consumer has fewer (any?) rights over the product, be it a piece of software or media, and the consumer pays more to whomever holds the rights. this is in direct conflict with the concept of Free Software.

microsoft has been trying to get customers to convert over to a subscription plan for their software and no one is doing it. why not? because no one wants to pay more, rely on a vendor more and give up ownership... and for what? there are no real benefits.
business people get a hard-on for subscription services that work because they make more money than other types... but the thing they don't realize is that subscription services that succeed do so because consumer want them and are willing to pay for the service. the current state is "let's make everything a service and try to convince consumers to pay for it".
no matter how powerful corporations become they are still at the mercy of consumers' money. assuming the majority of Joe Consumers aren't stupid enough to pay more money for less in exchange for some crap stamp of approval by the bastards who are charging you, DRM will never take off. of course, that won't keep business folks from trying, because all they have to do is wave (people with internet access * media per consumer * viewings per day) in front of a VC and say "if we could just capture 0.01% of that I can forecast 1000000% sustained growth". of course the problem is that the only way for DRM to succeed is for their to be no choice, because no one would choose to pay less for more.

bah! when i find junkmail in my mailbox i rent a dumptruck and transport a significant portion of the county dump to the mailman's front yard! when i catch someone driving drunk, i force them drink more and then drive backwards all the way back to where they started from! when a fat, drunk girl hits on me at the bar i go find an even fatter, drunker man to hit on *her*! when a used car salesman rips me off, i quit my job and go work as a used car salesman, sabotage his car, and then rip him off even worse! and when i when i catch an employee wasting time reading/., i make them surf 24 hours/day at -1 for the rest of the week!

Aardvark

Aardvark
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Tubulidentata
Family: Orycteropodidae
Genus: Orycteropus
Species: afer
Binomial name
Orycteropus afer
The aardvark (Orycteropus afer) is a medium-sized mammal native to Africa. The name comes from the Dutch for "earth pig", because early settlers from Europe thought it resembled a pig (although aardvarks are not closely related to pigs).
The aardvark is the only surviving member of the family Orycteropodidae and of the order Tubulidentata. The aardvark was originally placed in the same genus as the South American anteaters because of superficial similarities which, it is now known, are the result of convergent evolution, not common ancestry. (For the same reason, aardvarks bear a striking first-glance resemblance to the marsupial bilbies and bandicoots of Australasia, which are not placental mammals at all.)
iPods have always been over^H^H^H^Hpremium priced... welcome to Apple hardware. i would buy one if they cost less than doing a major upgrade (new proc and mobo) to my existing pc hardware
What do you think another flop is going to do to his consumer base? I don't care if he produces the movies himself or not, like the man said-- If this a repeat performace of one and two, quite a few people are going to assume the magic is gone and simply won't have faith in his future projects.
if that's the case, why are people still interested in III? personally i hated I but saw II in hope of anything decent. i will not see III.

IBM is pretty benevolent with their patents, and they're much better than small companies with the goal of "get a vague, broad patent on something that already exists and then make our money suing people". but the point is that there is a direct correlation between for vague, overbroad, frivolous patents and vague, overbroad, frivolous lawsuits.
the patent office needs a specialized branch for comp.sci-related patents
They said copying movies from the Internet costs them money and puts people out of a job. The ad was well done and would be understood by most anybody. The music folks are just an order of magnitude stupider than the movie people are
this may be true, however music trading online is much more prevalent than movie trading due to an average mp3 being 3-4 MB and an average divX version of a theatrical release being several hundred MB. so therefore, the music people have more to lose and faster.
however, they seem to be unable or unwilling to step down from their earlier hardnose stance on trading. instead of saying "why would people steal our music?" they said "anyone who trades music files on the internet is a criminal". instead of asking how they can change to due better in the digital world, they use old tactics to try to make the digital world conform to their view of the world. they will lose, it's only a matter of time. however, they have a LOT of money, so this kind of thing could drag on for another 10 years, maybe more. they'll change or be replaced by someone more business-savvy.
unfortunately i beg to differ... there are coders I work with that run X as root and do various other unsafe things on a regular basis. the sad thing is that some of them are better coders than me and more experienced and yet they do it anyhow... don't assume just because people are running Linux that they're not lazy.
How about Ciaran Hinds as Thrawn? Tall, imposing figure, dark hair, played President Nemerov in The Sum of all Fears. Irish-born IIRC, but he could certainly do some accent if needed.
i like it. let's go with it. we'll just film some footage of him walking and standing still and let the CGI folks take care of the effects.
I am not a chronic bush-hater, but this is fucking rediculous. The man's legacy will be stupid quotes and mediocre examples of the 3 easiest popularity boosting projects possible: a tax cut, a war and astronauts. For however many 100s of billion of $ all this will cost in the end, he could have done a whole lot more.
people bash mysql over one thing or another, but i've been happy with 4.0.x, looking forward to a stable 4.1 and once 5.x is stable there are few features they won't have that i might need for my own development. good work, mysql!
this is actually the original version of the module, tested by midget astronauts; god rest their souls.
they told me in kindergarten that sharing was a good thing

agreed. the man can pump out as many crappy star wars flicks as he likes and rake in more money that anyone else until the end of time.
for anyone that is not aware, this is the group that was supporting *BSD all that time.
you forget the Army of Lawyers factor. whoever has the most wins
then sue the Patent Office for infringement
