    Since you brought it up...

It often seems to be the case that the most vociferous anti-gay politicians, preachers, etc., turn out to be closeted gay themselves. They use anti-gay rhetoric as cover, to makes themselves appear more "straight." So, can you think of anyone who appears to be over-compensating in the "I am a straight male" department? Just asking...

I drive 2500 miles per week on American roads. While I see a lot of stupidity, we have nothing to compare with what I've seen from Russian dash cams. The situation in Russia is different because, in part, they haven't been driving very long, and yes, the huge alcohol problem. And, this is just a guess, but by the attitudes of people, I'm guessing there's a much smaller police presence on Russian roads than in the US. No one seems remotely concerned that the cops might roll up any second.
Americans, particularly nowadays, have internalized much of "safe driving" propaganda they've been taught their whole lives. I don't think Russians get a lot of this, but if they do, they haven't had the time to become socialized to a "safe driver" culture.

My roommate got a PS4, and I am considering it, but when I think of having to now pay to connect to that laggy service, it gives me pause. Of course, I'm rarely sure whether to blame R* or PSN, but either way, it's a lot of money to just play GTA, which is the only online game I play on a console. I have no interest in their "Plus" offerings, or in their Store. As far as I'm concerned, I shouldn't have to go through them at all to connect to R*, or Netflix, or anyone else's servers.

  6. Maybe it depends on the state but we stopped reciting the pledge in Illinois sometime around Middle School (around '95 or a so.) Dunno how it is today.

Grade school kids are still forced to do it. Which never ceases to blow my mind. They didn't have middle school when I was a kid, (late sixties, early seventies), so I was subjected to this McCarthyite indoctrination through the eighth grade. I don't know if middle schoolers are made to do this in other states.

I tell you this as a fellow Mac OS user - Mac OS is not inherently much more secure than any other OS. Mac OS has been spared because it has always been viewed as an elite, (or elitist), high-end product, ("but aren't Macs more expensive?"), and thus kept to a smaller market share. It's a smaller target. And it will continue to be spared if y'all will just shut up about it.

That old chestnut, "science can't prove x, so must be god" doesn't even deserve a retort. Really, I don't know why my fellow atheists bother. You just lend the fools credibility by responding.

You know, I don't care if "the kids" got into it because they thought it was all retro 'n' shit. I just hope that, after they get over that, they realize how much better records are - for everyone concerned - and stick with it. But, even in the darkest days, the independent and the boutique labels put it out, and I was able to find most of the records I wanted. I decided to go back to vinyl only around '95 when about 30% of my music was on CD. You just can't beat 2" tape and vinyl.

Can't RT first FA, but God has always been our fallback explanation of natural phenomena. As we learn more and more about how the world works, the less we need the actions of the gods to explain things. Because the theists want to continue to use the gods to explain natural phenomena by supernatural agency, they find themselves with less and less ground to stand on. This is just a search for a final toehold, something "science" can't explain, and it seems like a good spot because, at this point, we know nothing about the origin of life.

I always advise those who want to cling to the notion of a God to place him at the Big Bang. I think they'll be safe there for a long time.

That's usually the reason something is not palletized - stacking pallets would crush the product. A railcar can be three to four times the capacity of a container, so I can easily see it going on for three shifts. I know I've sat up to ten hours waiting for my 53' trailer to be unloaded by hand. That was a record, for sure, but it never took less than four hours.

I've been on the other end of it - a truck driver - and that's about right. Seeing an unpalletized load would make my heart sink. I've sat anywhere from four to ten hours, waiting for unpalletized loads to come off. I have no problem believing it took days to unload a railcar by hand. I believe a railcar is approximately equal to four truckloads, so that could easily work out to three shifts.
