In fact, in one of my jobs there was a Harvard graduate with a M.S. degree who didn't get the job simply because the pay was average at best and the company thought he was more likely to leave after a short period of time. Unless you are in the research field a degree from a prestigious school won’t help you much. As a matter of fact it makes you stand out as someone companies can’t afford because they are trying to tighten their belts.

You've just called quite a lot of smart people at the Apache Foundation incompetent. The reason you wouldn't use enum as your variable name is because enum is a reserved word in C/C++. This is not the case in Java, at least till 1.5. I have used variable named enum in some of my classes and the reason I did that was because 1) it didn't violate the language specification, 2) It was descriptive (i.e. Enumeration enum = getEnumeration();) and 3) becuase I actually had my own implementation of Enumeration since the language lacked C/C++ like enumeration.

And FYI, I come from a C/C++ background too but that doesn't mean I'll stick to C/C++ rules.

You might also want to take a look at my response to those who think IDEs can solve your problem easily.

  16. Re:I wait! on Have a Nice Steaming Cup of Java 5 · · Score: 1

Think outside the box. Renaming things is not as easy as you make it out to be. On a big project you can potentially have 20+ library packages and for every one of those packages that has "enum" anywhere you have to get the source code to the package, make the changes, recompile them, build the library. Of course this assumes that the source code to these libraries are open source. If they are not open source, you have to go to the vendor of the library who in all likelihood will not expedite the request and give you a new library quick. Finally, if you are familiar with formal software development you know you have to perform regression testing to make sure you didn't break anything. I'm also sure you are familiar with the phrase "whatever can go wrong will go wrong." In conclusion, this not an easy task and time is money.

If you have a variable name or package name called "enum" anywhere in your source code you'll have to replace every instance of it with something other than "enum." Apache Axis suffers from this problem and I am sure a lot of other projects do too. Have fun renaming stuff.

With state funding it is not hard to get top notch developers working on their own flavor of Linux. It doesn't take a genius to manage code change either. It's a simple get latest, inspect the changes made and incorporate the change into your codebase. I would also like to point out that a large percentage of engineers in the IT field are foreign born. You underestimate the competence of the world outside your own. Might also want to note that Iran is one the better nations in terms of mathematics even with its limited resources.

One can defend themselves easily if they have the law on their side. The first step to defending one's self is to know what legal rights you have. In a case like this I know right of the bat that 1) They will have to sue me in the United States. 2) The burden is on them of proof is on them. Knowing these two facts I would write a letter that states clearly that 1) I will defend myself and will seek lawyer fees plus the maximum monetary damage allowed by law. 2) The next time they send me a letter they'll be hearing from my lawyer. If you are not already aware, there are plenty of lawyers out there that make a living on lawyer fees paid by the loosing side and would be glad to take a case as long as it's a shoe in.

Clearly in this case the project was named before the trademark was registered. The question then becomes whose project began first? If you can prove that your project started first then it's a slam dunk.
