If you've ever been tricked by one of those ads telling you that your "connection is not optimized" or that you have "1 new message waiting," you could be part of the class.

What kind of microphone do the judges use?

If this is so hard on the speakers, how hard is it on the microphones? And how accurately can they measure such intense sound? I would think that the condition and placement of the microphone would swamp many other factors.
Look around at all the variation on the surface of the earth. The highest point, Everest, is 8846 meters above sea level. The lowest point, the Dead Sea, if -400 meters. But since the mean radius of the earth is about 6.3 million meters, all that variation represents little more then 0.1% difference.
One of my "colleagues" comes in around 12 noon every day, fires up solitaire, and plays until at least 3 pm - then, half the time, leaves at 4 pm supposedly to pick up his daughter (yeah, right).
Just today, some folks were asking the rest of us why a certain bug has not been fixed yet. Naturally, he was already gone for the day. I slipped while trying to reassure them and said "I'm sure he will leave no card unturned". Naturally, all of us who know what's going on broke out laughing....
...make it -2 and a million zeros after the decimal. Or better, use 1 followed by a million nines after the decimal. One followed by an infinite number of nines after the decimal is exactly equal to 2.
You (and the A.C. before you) are right - I didn't see that as a joke on McGee - and I was aware of McGee's products.
I don't follow Penny Arcade, and I didn't read the forum. I just looked at the picture and saw an unwarranted (and stupid) attack on "Strawberry Shortcake". Maybe American Greetings has a point.
That is about on the level of a grade school blackboard drawing of humping stick figures labeled "principal" and "teacher". Anybody who finds that "funny" needs to see a lawyer themselves - their emotional development has obviously been arrested.
Or until the numericaly superior software engineers silently kill all the other engineers.
Let's see...
Civil engineers build roads and dams.
"Software engineers" type.
Okay, so the "software engineers" have the advantage in the initial "poking each other in the chest" stage. But after that, my money would be on the dam builders.
I agree RE: FF, but not everybody would have this problem.
As it happened, I had two tickets to the preview in Boston, and roped in a friend at the last minute. A few minutes into the show, I realized I hadn't mentioned that everything was CG. I leaned over and whispered an explanation, and she seemed dubious but relieved.
On went the show for another, maybe 15-20 minutes, when she tugged my sleeve. I leaned toward her, and she pointed out one of the characters on the screen - the sargent, I think. "Not him tho... right?" she asked, totally serious.
Thanks for the insight. I still think I'll spin a copy up when I get some time - performance sometimes isn't the most important driver, in my experience - but I'll keep an eye open for limitations that you describe.
As for simplicity - I'm all for it! As Albert said, "as simple as possible -- but no simpler."
I never knew any reason to consider OpenBSD (versus FreeBSD or one of the Linux distros). But security is a pretty good reason. I think I'll put OpenBSD on one of my servers and see how it looks. Thanks, Slashdot!
I can prove you're wrong.

It's be one thing if the grant said "Only Spend This Money On Non-MS Products Or Services". It's quite another to say "Don't Spend Any Money From Any Other Source On MS Products Or Services".
Ten years is a long time in software terms. Who knows that can't-live-without products will come along 3, 4, 5 years from now? What if MS bought Adobe? Or Apple? Why cut yourself and 7000 students per year off from learning and using the best that world has to offer, whoever it's from?
I don't care how much money you donate, you shouldn't be allowed to set the agenda for 7000 students for 10 years. Try to reason with the Alumni, but be prepared to let the money go.

"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

Okay then. I think this proves that it is slashdot moderators who really stifle innovation!

Here's a helpful link, in case anyone else out there is also innumerate.
A "little" difference can matter a great deal.

I just hate to see anyone treating Strawberry Shortcake like a common tart.

Difficult to carry around? If you had enough, it'd carry you around!
Tell them to have the U.N. write a resolution against you. That way everybody wins: they get to look busy, and you don't ever have to comply!
I agree. Taco, couldn't you have just said "Fat Chance"?
