Another reason I think cable modem companies block port 80 to help stop the spread of worms like Nimda. I believe thats why my Netgear cable modem router blocks port 80 by default as well. It would be nice if you could ask the cable modem companies to unblock port 80 because if you know to ask them to unblock port 80 you probably have a clue about how to run a virus scanner.
As a side note I made a slight mistake this weekend and installed IIS on my Win2k box. I always keep up with the service updates and security patches. However, since IIS was installed after the patches (at 4am) it was unpatched and I didn't run Windows Update to correct this. The result was Nimda found my computer within 8 hours and setup shop. Then my virus scanner found it and I eradicated it. Could not believe how fast this stuff happens!
OK, so I got the following e-mail back from Bookmarksync's tech support.
Hi John,
BookmarkSync 2.0 is delayed, but it will be coming soon. It is essentially a rewrite of the synchronizer that addresses a great many issues with it, including above all else allowing for Unicode support, which is why 1.3 won't work with Mozilla.
We will have a public beta available just as soon as it is practical, a matter of a few weeks, we hope.
I'm very happy that they are continuing their development efforts. The sooner 2.0 comes out the sooner I can get to using Mozilla full time. Way to go guys!
I would use it if the people over at Bookmarksync.com would support the browser. I use Bookmarksync.com to keep track of all my bookmarks and so that I can access any bookmark on multiple PCs or even look one up over the web. I'm not putting a link in for their site cuz I'm a little miffed that they haven't even tried to support Mozilla yet.
I sent an e-mail to my guys at pair.net and they said they would look into it. They also said thanks for pointing the site out. Maybe some of you guys can try some other hosting sites? Worth a shot!
I just moved to Dallas, TX and like Utah in order to drink in certain areas you have to have a Unicard. The Unicard system allows people over the age of 21 to drink in clubs located in dry counties located in the Dallas / Fort Worth metroplex. By being a part of a "Private Club" I can get around this retarded law. Before reading this article I would often allow clubs to scan my license instead of using my Unicard because it was already out and convenient. I should have known better, but did not really think people actually accumulated this data. Anyway, I just talked to the Unicard people on the phone and they were very helpful and assured me that the only reason my address was used was for internal reasons. No marketing, and no statistical analysis. So Dallas / Fort Worth citizens and visiting friends use your Unicard and don't let them swipe your ID!
The old agreement for getting yahoo through POP3 involved marking a checkbox where you would agree to be put on more advertiser's lists so that Yahoo could get more revenue from spammers. What I think will really happen now is that you'll pay for them to "remove the spam"... yeah right! and it'll be the same as before with you $20 poorer...haha...
I can't say too much though. I use USA.Net and they charged $30/year last year. Now they wanna charge for $45/year or $65/2yrs (members price) for e-mail. Thing is I want to have one non-isp dependent e-mail address so that people can always get ahold of me on e-mail. I also don't wanna host my own e-mail server (reliability), and I don't want to succumb to the borg. I gotta get my own domain!
I dunno man. My webpage is hosted at Pair Networks and they have FreeBSD boxes. I never thought *BSD was bad ass, but I have hosted off and on through them for the last 3 years or so after getting a recommendation from Tom's Hardware. If I had a server I think I would look into it, but for me Linux works just fine.
I remember the porn that showed up from weasels wandering around with sony cams with x-ray vision. I can only imagine what the airport security will end up showing on the Internet when they get this.
That sounds really cool. Also removes the financial carrot from many small towns. However, I can't find any evidence to back it up. Maybe you know of a link?
Well Billy Bob the policeman should be doing something else besides whoring out the county and giving out speeding tickets to raise revenue. Police should be trying to prevent real crimes like murder, stealing, etc..
I have received several tickets, but not once have I received help from Police when I needed it. I have been at functions where friends were shot at and on another occasion had my car stolen. I reported the license plate to the cop of the offending car, but did they catch them? Hell no. I asked the cop to finger print my car when we recovered it, but "he didn't have his kit". So much for fighting crime eh?
I'll fight every damn ticket I get if for no other reason but to give cops incentive to do their real work instead of milking another revenue stream.
Sorry if I offended any policemen out there. I'm sure there are some of you doing a good job.
This site is a true style manual focused on design principles. I know you guys have said the basics like no pop-unders, etc.. but that doesn't help with aesthetic and functional designs. Just removes the pet peeves some sites put up. Give it a looksie, especially if you are a web designer.
I know you weren't dogging C/C++, but I would like to take this opportunity to point out that for embedded development on a microcontroller, or development on any non-PC platform C is a God send. Programming for PCs is only a small fraction of the whole pie.. by small I mean out of "100 million or so PCs shipped each year; (there are) 6 billion processors that go into embedded systems " - Jack Ganssle Just check your Palm, cellphone, microwave, car, sound card, video card, stereo, fridge, ac unit, gas pump, coke machine, etc.. if you don't believe me;)
The embedded market is enormous and C/C++ aren't going away anytime soon.
I should have mentioned an ethical responsibility. That is for the sake of humanity and the value of human life we should try and right wrongs if we can. A good faith effort if you will, but like you say we can't tell other countries what to do. Should have mentioned that before.
When other people are doing things which we know are harmful to them and their environment we have a responsibility to try and help deter this act. However, so does their government. Their government elected (or not) by their people has the primary responsibility in looking after its own people. Our responsibilities are secondary. We (the US) are not God, we are not the world's baby sitter, we are not ultimately responsible for every other governments ineptitude and disregard for its own people. With that in mind I think a small recycling tax pre-paid for every computer part should be charged. In exchange a convenient and local outlet for recycling should be provided. I don't wanna have to pay $30 to recycle my 286. Thats bullshit. I'll just chunk it in the garbage first if thats the case. I know, I'm a pompus jackass for doing so, but I bet nine times outta ten thats what you do too.. so:P
Anyway, I guess thats the problem in the United States. Everyone is saying recycle, recycle, but no one (except maybe Cali or Oregon) gives you convenient resources to actually do it. If I wanna recycle my plastic I have to drive to some distanct Wal-Mart with a trunk full of trash to do so.
Thanks for the technical response. I guess that dashes my hopes of using the VisorPhone as a modem / part time cell phone. Guess I'll be using a cable or waiting for blue tooth. Thanks again:)
Since you have a VisorPhone attachment can you use both your VisorPhone and your regular cell phone? I'm sure you cannot use the services concurrently, but can you say turn off your cell phone and then use your VisorPhone or vice versa? I'm interested in using the VisorPhone on occasion, but I'm in no rush to replace my cell phone since its form factor is much smaller. Thanks for any help.
Much to my dismay Texas A&M implemented a system a few years back which does just that. You may want to contact their computer group to see if they can help you out. I know their system was cross platform because when I would use their XPRINT system my meter would be incremented. When I used Macs the same deal...
I'm sure there are others out there, but I'm also pretty sure their system is an in-house solution. Maybe since you are a university and one in Texas at that they will help ya out:)
Hey, thanks for putting this together. However, on the topic of polls I would *much* rather have the current system instead of no moderation. Yes, its not perfect. Yes, there are great inconsistencies in the moderation. However, due to the volume of traffic and posts on here the moderation system is far superior to the alternative. I visit other flat sites with no moderation and read a bunch of crap posts. At least here I have a chance of an insightful comment rising out of the ashes. Anyway, you obviously put alot of work into getting this info together. Thanks again for doing that.

Both you and the employer have to initial and date the changes? Would the contract still be valid if they did not initial and date the changes?
