Although Palm devices are evolving there focus is on speed and ease of use. There is no hourglass pointer on a Palm device because all of the apps are optimized for speed and don't need an hourglass. When you buy a WinCE machine you can be assured that your PDA will be outdated soon. This is because the WinCE apps constantly include bloat, have no regard for memory, and take forever to load. A Palm device with 8MB of memory can have *many* apps with the largest being around 250k. On a WinCE machine bloated apps are several MBs in size and take a little while to load.
I guess Palm and WinCE PDAs can be compared to consoles and computers. Programs for Palms assume the hardware is going to be about the same across any Palm device, while WinCE programs want you to get a 200MHz StrongARM on a 32MB of memory machine.. and even then your still waiting on the hourglass. Of course, this is an exaggeration, but there is an entirely different philosophy when programming for a Palm. Of course, there are going to be exceptions, but by and large the Palm adheres nicely to the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid). This fits nicely to an on the go device and thats why Palm has 80% of market share.
If you want a shrunken laptop with Windows problems and crashes everywhere get a WinCE device. If you want a real PDA that helps you get stuff done get a Palm.
Anyone notice Netscape did the same thing? It's called URL redirection. So they can keep track of $hits$ and as someone mentioned if the URL changes no problem... This is news?
Thing is the cards cost alot more to manufacture. With the new GeForce 256 Cards there is 256MB of DDR RAM. That's expensive, and with the Voodoo's they have to cram 4 chips onto a massive big bertha card with an external power supply just to *compete* with a GeForce.. makes me laugh.. and I'm sure it makes nVidia laugh all the way to the bank.. hahaha... 3dfx needs a new chip.
Preach on brother (or sister... can't tell with AC;).. the anime kinda pushed me over the boat there. Cool stuff that is scientific is nice, but anime?! WTF? Wish I had some moderator points to, but I posted a comment already..
Just bought some of Intel's i815 motherboards with on-board ethernet. Unfortunately, 2.2.16 does not have a driver for the Intel® 82562ET 10/100 Mbit/sec Platform LAN that comes built into the motherboards (optional of course). From what I read on newsgroups support could be added with a patch or two to the 2.2.16 kernel since the chip is based on popular ethernet cards using tulip drivers, but unfortunately I don't possess enough Linux Karma to get that to work yet. Anyway, now that 2.2.17 is out hopefully RedHat will be releasing some new RPMs soon and I can get my ethernet to work, and if they don't.. well I'll just have to get down n' dirty and make RedHat and my 2.2.17 kernel play nice;)
Hell yeah! I second the motion. All they do is dis big companies, call everything hype, but never have much to say that is informative. They are like the Enquirer of Technology. Occasionally, getting info quicker than the mainstream, but usually their articles are trivial, mindless bullsheet.
Alright so people bitch and moan about how lobbyists and money skew politics. Well if the voter was paid directly for voting this problem would be exacerbated by a very large factor. I don't see paying voters as part of the solution. Besides how much could political organizations (or lobbyists) actually afford to pay the voter? I think it would be *really* *really* sad if the only way a voter would come out and vote is to be bribed, and our society deserves to go down in flames if it comes to that (after all, they all do eventually). Haven't people seen what the evils of corruption do? Look at law enforcement in almost any latin country! Been there, seen that!
I for one vote on the issues, what a politician stands for, and how that relates to my beliefs. If some piece of shit wants to sell their vote for $5.... and alot of people do that... well then I'm getting the hell out of the US because democracy, the constitution, etc.. is just a joke at that point. I'll go somewhere where people aren't so damn apathetic and self-centered. A place where people who bitch about politics, politicians, etc.. do something about it. With the Internet we can be informed voters. There is no reason to be apathetic anymore. We just need better more useful sites of political information. I don't know maybe at 23 I'm too old fashioned.
hehe.. go ahead and get a Voodoo with an external power supply.. I'd never put one of those in my box, even if it was free. That thing is the biggest freaking piece of inefficient hardware . They need four chips and an external power supply to compete. How sad... perhaps they should have spent more money on R&D, instead of marketing..
Now I know its time for Sting to change his name so that he can register the site...
theartistformerlyknownassting.com
hehe... kiss my arse Sting you were too late on the domain. You and your corporate wheezebags should have jumped on the Internet before the 21st century. Anyway, maybe if you're nice and you cough up enough cash then you can get the site. I can see BritneySpears.com or Metallica.com (aghh), but trying to sue for Sting.com... whatever, thank you try another word.
hmmm.. good idea.. I installed Linux on a Jaz disk in '97, but since I got a dedicated box I haven't messed with it much... think I'll go distribution crazy now.. got lots of empty Jaz Disks just cryin for BSDs and different distros of Linux. Thanks!!
Am I in The United States of America? The same country that passed the Bill of Rights? I forget because the so called "Drug War" mask makes me think that I am living in Communist China sometimes. This whole "Drug War" sure does allow the government to bend the rules alot in their favor, even when drugs aren't the reason people are being arrested. Made up monologue below...
GOVT: "Lets get everybody all pissed off about drugs so we can crap on the Bill of Rights, violate illegal search and seizure laws, restrict freedom of speech, restrict freedom of the press, seize "drug" property without due process (and spend the money like common theives regardless of guilt or innocence), lie under oath (I know officers who routinely do this in College Station, Texas! YES I'm calling you out ya perjurors! Bryan cops are better.), illegally monitor e-mail via carnivore, obtain wiretaps for the hell of it, etc..."
The best part of this whole thing is how the sneaky bastard that authored the bill snuck this in as a rider to the "Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2000". If you are my Senator or Representative you can bet your a$$ I'm not voting for you in the next election. I respect no representative that votes away the rights given to us by our forefathers. I would rather vote for Mickey Mouse, Homer Simpson, my dead dog Elmer (God bless that crazy dog), or even... dare I say it? Hillary Clinton.. aghhh!
Back to the serious side. I'm not a paranoid psychotic or anything, but it sure is quite clear to me that the "Drug War" is a very convenient tool for getting more illegal power for the government at the expense of what the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was founded on! At least there are checks... I'm rootin' for the Supreme Court! But in the meantime I'm writing my both of my Representatives and my Senator!
Horray! Horray! Good points. I think people that freak over non-abusive portscans are *way* to anal. If you setup a good firewall (or any security system for that matter) you should be laughing at the people that are portscanning you. In addition, people that freak over portscans are usually just doing the blowfish thing. Pretending they are a really big fish when really they are scrawny and weak. So in conclusion, pissed about portscans? Get the hell off the net!
JOhn P.S. If you can give me valid reasons to be pissed about portscans and prove your point I would be all ears. Don't just say "cuz someone formattted my drive". Give details!:)
Good job. Every little bit helps out. There are some *rude* people who are posting here, but who cares there are pricks everywhere. In any case, good job on taking the initiative when specs were scarce.
Hey I agree the whole Kerberos thing is a crock. As a matter of fact any Microsoft product or technology that reduces cross-platform compatibility where there is already a standard is evil (ActiveX, JScript, DirectX, etc.. to name a few). Unfortunately, Kerberos is just another instance of Microsoft being monopolistic.
I personally make it a point to learn programming languages and techniques which are cross platform.. even if there is a little more legwork. I program all of my webpages to look nice in Netscape. I learned PHP (not VBScript) when I wanted database access tools. Although I use WinNT as my main box at home. I develop with and frequently use another Linux box for all of my other stuff (webpage, database, php, mp3 server, file server, etc...). I am also currently developing Palm Applications at work on a Linux box I setup. I've been dabbling with Linux since '95 (Slackware), but did not get the hardware funds for a dedicated box until '98 (I'm in college). Also, I don't buy any DirectX only games gotta have OpenGL (hear that game devs!). I'll stop there. Thanks to everyone who posted comments to my original article. I have been enlightened to say the least.
First of all the whole "ignorant fuckhead" was entirely unnecessary. But what do you expect from an AC? Altough you're comments were a bit on the inflamatory side the the NCR deal was educational. I wouldn't call myself ignorant because I didn't know this, but certainly not as knowledgeable as yourself (the all knowing... I'm sure). I think in the future you should follow the courteous trend that others have displayed in this thread. We are a community and I like those who help make it better in a constructive way.
Anyway, with my precedent argument I'm just saying that a company who makes OSes should be allowed to make applications as well thats all. In the event that some other company that makes OSes becomes dominant I hope that this splitting of apps and OSes is not applied to them as well. Yeah, its a stretch that that would happen because this only happened to MS because of their blatant abuse of power, but you never know. Thats all I'm trying to say here. I should mention that I fully support the public disclosure of all APIs in a timely fashion. I guess the split just makes sure this will happen.
I would just like to say that I do not like the precendent that the judge is setting. Involuntarily splitting up a software company certainly limits freedom to innovate or create products. However, I think all of this is simply to force Microsoft to open up their APIs, which is a great thing. Hopefully this will make Kerberos play ball too!
I cannot believe the audacity of some people. The Internet was created by a bunch of brilliant scientists to aid in communications. Then some fscking little greedy company thinks they can claim a patent for something they didn't even invent! They need the Internet Death Penalty! Ban their whole company for life. Make every machine on the web drop their IPs into non-routables!!!! Every firewall should default block them out!! This patented GET and POST to databases is the most ludicrous patent I have ever heard of. As I submit this comment Slashdot is supposedly violating their patent... yeah right!! Arghh... must quit rant now.. flame throwers getting too hot..
Well how does a French court have jurisdiction here? How does an American court have jurisdiction in Antigua? Well neither of them do. I know they say they do, but they don't. They make up some bullshit commerce clause. Now, if the Supreme Court said so I would perk my ears up. Anyway, if you ignore these pansy little terd judges they'll go away. What are they going to do to you anyway? Is the French Military going to come take all the Yahooligans away? Yeah right... All they can do is sit back and throw a temper tantrum. In this case the foreign government only has as much power as you let them have. They don't represent us (USA). If they don't like the auctios well f$%k 'em. Go somewhere else. It's a big web.
DOH... GeForce 256 is 256-bit not 256 MB of RAM.. guess I'm the dumbass.. hehe..
