  1. Re:Bush on US Government Restricting Research Libraries · · Score: 5, Insightful

Not true. Bush inherited an economy that was tanking before he even took office. I'm not saying it was Clinton's fault, just a natural cycle after one of the biggest bubbles we have ever had. In addition, 9/11 happened within one year of his office. He has not had an easy time.

Do not mistake me taking up for Bush in approving everything he does. I'm quite disturbed by both this issue, the NSA Domestic Wiretapping issue, and our handling of the Iraq war. Those issues will definitely weigh in my political choices. It should be an interesting election cycle in November.

I've been looking for a Micro / Mini ITX solution for a while with a low Watt processor. I would like to find a *small* case that and fit disks in it to store 1-TB with RAID 1 (mirroring). There are lots of commercial solutions out there with cool cases, but I want to build my own with Linux. Then I want to build a few more and sync them using rsync. You can't do that with any of the commercial solutions I have seen. The case has always been the issue. I can find the software and the motherboard.

You are right about Ethanol being more corrosive. Methanol is even worse. For the most part though, Ethanol is currently being used as a replacement for MTBEs. MTBEs are better than lead as an octane enhancer, but are still bad for the environment and for our health. Since Ethanol is being used instead this reduces harmful emissions from our cars, but at the expense of higher priced gas. I bet markets adjust in the long run though and reduce the price of Ethanol. The price at the pump may be a little higher in the end, but if we take the cost to our national health the effective price should be lower. We already did this once for lead and I'm glad we're taking a step forward and taking MTBEs from gas.

Also, check out the Gray & Varcoe paper on this topic. It's very informative, it explains why using Ethanol as an aromatic is a good idea and it has numerous references to back up every claim.

Sorry to hear about your brother. In hind site I'm sure he would have contacted Amazon earlier.

While we're throwing out anecdotal evidence I'll throw out mine. I've had nothing but good experiences with Amazon. I originally boycotted them for many years (maybe 3 - 5) because of their frivolous patents. Then I decided to give them a shot.

I do alot of online shopping and I now order hundreds if not thousands of dollars of merchandise from them. I have not had a single problem. In fact, I'm an Amazon Prime member and I love how I can get my computer books the next day from them for only $3.99 (plus the yearly $79.99 membership fee). The website is well layed out, the website learns what I like, I love the wishlists, and the reviews. When I go to shop I start at Amazon, and then branch out.

Also, if you're looking for a cheaper way to buy CDs try joining BMGmusic.com. Once you count the free CDs they give you you pay somewhere between $5 - $7 per CD with shipping. Not a bad deal at all, and if you sign up a friend (*cough* your alter ego *cough*) you get four free CDs and only pay a few bucks shipping. Then you can make your high quality rips, and not be encumbered by stupid DRM.

House, Senate (I think), and President, etc... I'm much more inclined to vote for Democrats into a Legislative body, but we'll have to see what the platform is. The Democrats need to capitalize and champion our civil liberties. They seem to have done so somewhat, but IMHO they aren't focused. For the most part they just come off as a bunch of nay-sayers to me. I really wish we could get more than a two-party system going here. Anyway... thanks for the post and for mentioning the Diebold BS.

Big telecoms are getting money from VOIP services in the form of broadband subscribers. I *pay* for broadband I get to do what I want to on it. The ISP has no right to regulate what I do with that connection. In fact, I would argue that the total throughput of voice calls per month is minor compared to the throughput used for other things we like to do on the net. However, for those other things the phone company doesn't say shit. They are just pissed because Vonage targets their over inflated voice business and they don't want to adjust their business model.

Whats funny is the irony. The phone company originally created ADSL to be able to offer video and compete with cable services. Now their own lines are being used to piggy back voice services for other companies.

The second time was much more serious, and I was quite impressed with what Brian had been through covering Hurricane Katrina from inside the Super Dome and around New Orleans. Brian is no talking head. He could be replaced by a Gideon Yago type anchor, but the quality of the coverage would surely suffer. Making their newscasts available online is a good step to increasing their viewer base without pandering to meaningless Hollywood gossip, or other gimmicks.
