  1. Re:The comment may also be complex.. on If the Comments Are Ugly, the Code Is Ugly · · Score: 1

Out of interest do you expect code to compile first time?

I'm always suspicious if this happens, but it's probably because I don't do much coding in my job - when I do code it tends to be scripts to quickly test something/process data (or some embedded code for a micro controller) - as such I always tend to be using different compilers (esp embedded ones which always seem to have their own set of non standard stuff), languages (python then C++ etc).

As a result I'm always making some sort of grammar mistake (i.e commenting out C++ with # instead of //, missing the odd semi-colon, pressing tab instead of spaces (or not setting up the text editor to handle this correctly) or forgetting the correct way to refer to a member function via a pointer etc..)

It could just be that I'm used to compiling being the fastest way to catch this kind of problem in most cases.

You can't generate to peak demand when the demand isn't there unless you've got some kind of energy sink. Without this you couldn't keep the power output within spec (i.e 240V etc) (I think in the UK there's a big pump that takes water to the top of a dam overnight (cheap energy) and releases to drive turbines and sell the energy back in the short (5minute range) periods of peak demand)

Nuclear power cant be turned off/on that quickly or as the parent said the amount of power produced adjusted., Wind power is (relatively) unpredictable without batteries although some control is possible via gearing/pitch etc. hydros seasonal (or tidal) and as pointed out elsewhere has large environmental impacts as you get higher. France do export a fair amount of their power production which might ease the requirement for more flexible power plants (or at least move it out of France) but I'd be surprised if a few more flexible plants weren't needed there as well.

Here in the UK that was solved by turning down the analog stuff so that it appears to be better :) (And to allow them to provide digital coverage to the rest of the UK where interference is causing problems) It's something I overheard in a pub, but even if it's not true it probably would work :)

Im not responding to the fact that this happens etc, I dont live in the USA (though It's not much different over here in the UK) - In my car I've got a lighter, a heavy maglite and at least one knife, most of which sit next to my tow rope/warning triangle and various other car tools. I'd consider any one of these items essential for minor maintenance of the car, and more importantly at an accident or breakdown. (One example is cutting away a seat belt, ive never tried this, and the knife is actually in the boot, so not that useful there).

Anyway, the point being, it's absolutely ludicrous that essential tools cant be stored in a car according to some higher power (school) - of course if you get into a situation and need them you can bet you wont get any compensation for them for preventing you having one!

On the other hand, knifes etc arent the kind of things I'd carry *in* the school grounds unless i needed a tool for some reason (cant think of a reason where one wouldnt be provided!) Are smoking laws the same in USA? (16 here, school can confiscate but has to give back to parent at least, 18 cant really do anything) Surely thats a valid reason to carry a lighter on person? I'm sure its doable, but youll need a bit more than a lighter to burn down most buildings these days :)

Again with the cough drops, and even more obvious example of utter lunacy, i take it that includes things like aspirin and paracetomal? With minor illnesses you can just about make school with these (or I know some people who get tension headaches and the like with exams and need to focus). Back when i was at school we had to leave that kind of thing with a teacher (or meant to) - but suspension for not doing so was unheard of. Then again, its only really the right wing papers that seem that interested in these kind of stories lately!

(Going a bit further off topic sorry ;)) Yup, alot of the advanced training over here in the UK (IAM and all the others) seem to be about assuming everyone else on the road is an idiot, and interpreting signals for what they really mean -- Someone flashing their headlights or their left indicator going when your waiting at a junction merely confirms that the bulbs are working -- essentially dont act until you can see the car start to move etc, roundabouts is about watching position of oncoming cars wheels etc. We've all been in situations where someone has turned left (in the USA right i guess) and has left their indicator on by mistake.. you could intepret this thatll theyll slow down and turn into junction your waiting at and go.

So exactly what you said, just assuming that they cant see you *and* they are complete idiots :) I think you touched on this too, your observation should include hazards to them, and thus likely actions theyll take (they may not see the parked car on other side of a blind junction so you drop speed or pull well over to the left as you go past them etc. Or on a motorway not overtaking a car infront of you near a junction in the first/second lane -- they may decide to move out into the lane your using to overtake without seeing you when a car moving out from the slip road forces them to do so etc - you've seen the hazard and realise its not that unlikely for them to have to pull out, so you hang back until safely clear and then make a clear decisive movement to overtake.

With bikes, a major problem I see over here is that in urban areas theyll tailgate behind a car -- meaning if the car slows down they may go into the back, but more importantly their hard to see from a junction where aa waiting car may think its clear after the car has gone past and pull out -- there was an accident a few years ago near where I live where a car was waiting to turn right from a semi-busy urban road and a small queue was forming (giving way to oncoming traffic) -- motorbike decided to overtake as he came up to the queue as the car turning right pulled out - I think he was thrown of bike and later died of head injuries. (Why worth double checking mirrors as you act, but good observation would have prevented such a waste.
