There actually isn't any spyware in the most recent versions, and they've got a lot less bloated.
I'll be the first to admit Real used to be one of the worst companies around, but they really do seem to have improved recently.
If people want windows with a media player thats fine. They can pay the probably very small (I'd imagine about £2) that a "with media player" copy of windows will be. Or downloaded it from Microsoft's website.
The point is, and the point that the European court has decided on, is that you CANNOT USE A MONOPOLY YOU ALREADY HAVE TO UNFAIRLY TRY TO GET ANOTHER ONE.
Repeat after me. Microsoft can give away or sell media player. What they can't do is use their monopoly on operating systems to aid them getting one in media players. Those are the rules you have to play by once you are in a monopoly position
Just a couple of points before anyone says "X isn't like the book".
a) The book and radio shows were quite different in a number of ways. b) Douglas Adams actually wrote quite a bit of the script to this film. He said that it would be different to the books and the radio show.
I've actually read the article, and wonder if some people are taking a little too seriously...
While it is a well written and interesting discussion of reverse enginnering a virus, the writers admit they hadn't really done any reverse enginnering before this project at all. Also, how exactly did everything think that Anti-virus writers have been tracking what viruses do and how to kill them? Any major virus is of course disassembled by the antivirus writers so they can decide how to remove it, espically now many viruses are polymorphic.
On the other hand, getting hold of those reverse enginnerings is obvious quite hard, as there is no good reason to give them out. Perhaps this suggests there should be more openness?
In other news, Bic has been sued as someone used one to draw a copy of Wolverine..
Seriously however. I don't think that CoH is at all designed to allow people to rip off Marvel, unless marvel wants to claim it has copyright to a) people in stupid looking suits with a logo on them, b) women in skin-tight outfits or c) Huge hulking creatures.
AFAIK, these were all around long before Marvel. Also I would say CoH should be praised for making their system of character design as flexable as it is. Unfortunatly this was always going to lead to people making things that looked like other characters.
What is more fun is to just swap a few stickers, then give it to someone who claims they can solve the cube. Usually if you swap a few stickers you'll make a new unsolvable problem (it isn't possible to get from any cube to the solution ^_^ )
WinPCAP and psSDK are both packet sniffing libraries.
WinPCAP is licensed under the BSD licence, psSDK is a closed source, pay for, library. Therefore I'm really not certain why using psSDK is considered an advantage over WinPCAP..?
OK, I sound like a fanboy, but Red vs. Blue is actually quite good:)
I feel it's one of the best examples of "some people with some ideas, some time and an internet connection can make something funnier than 90% of the stuff on TV". If you haven't seen the first and second series, you really should.
Actually, if they just move to GAIM and continue using the MSN network then they will still have the same problem. All this worm does is try to use MSN's "send file" facility, which GAIM will recieve.
It is true that if you have GAIM you won't be able to infect other people which is one thing, but you'll still have the worm yourself.
Or could this be exactly the same as the PS1 vs. saturn and PS2 vs. dreamcast, where people won't buy the currently out console because Sony swears that any days now they'll have "The greatest thing that ever happened in your life, ever" (anyone remember the 'emotion engine'?) coming out "any day now", which just continues slipping further and further back?
I'm not a Sony hater, but I would have expected people to have spotted the pattern by now..
Just because all your programs input / output ASCII, that doesn't make them "compatable formats".
I've got bitten more than once by filenames with spaces in, and always thought it would be nice if there was more structure to the input and outputs. Once I got badly bitten by some joker who decided to make a file called "-rf" (yes, you can make such a file). This kind of system with more structure makes it much easier to seperate filenames, switches, etc. in a clean and safe manner. I'm quite looking forward to it myself.
Conveniently located in the heart of Palmyra Atoll, eProvisia LLC is the leading provider of reliable, robust, powerful and cost-efficient spam filtering solutions for world-class corporations and individual users.
Privately funded in 1993, now with customers in 40 countries* and over $67 million** in cash reserves,....
* - Not all currently recognized by UN. ** - Palmyra Atoll dollars.
Palmyra Atoll is uninhabited, and doesn't have a currency. The phone number is invalid (nowhere has a +78 extension), and what kind of place lists in its address "Islet 7, 5 52 N 162 06 W"?
I wouldn't have bothered posting this except it seems like both slashdot and most of the people reading this seem to be taking it seriously. It's not.
1) "anti-gravity space ship", what kind of rubbish is that?
2) Actually according to relativity, there is no way of distguishing between acceleration and gravity. Therefore if I put you in a sealed box and either a) leave you floating in deep space or b) put you in free fall then there is no way of you telling the difference (ok, there is as there will be slight air resistance slowing you down, and you could measure the very tiny difference in gravity between the top and bottom of the box, etc.).
There is always "c) you hit the ground" too of course:)
but seriously, this really is zero-G for all intents and purposes foras long as they can accalerate you downwards at 9.8m/s
Actually, I'm fairly certain it is: iii) Student comes up with interesting (and possibly new, I don't know) result of generating infinate series which converges to root of polynomial. Someone (popular media?) believes that this violates Abel's proof (it doesn't, his proof is for finite representations of the roots).
This has NOTHING to do with Abel, or Godel, or anyone other related theories, as they do not consider the case of infiniate series.
I think too many people weren't around in the days before windows 95. One of the MAJOR selling points for gamers was escaping the world of incompatable VESA/Sound blaster drivers and changing autoexec.bat/config.sys files which had to be tweaked for each game and how old games never worked on newer hardware.
While it's easy to say "use OpenGL+SDL instead of DirectX, then you can get to Mac / Linux users", there is one important thing you have missed.
Quite a few (although it's getting better) graphics cards have sucky openGL drivers. So is there more windows users with bad openGL drivers than there are mac and linux users? I suspect the answer is yes.
While you laugh.. they still aren't fixing 10.1 and 10.0.. I remember people complaining at microsoft for stopping windows 95 support in 2001, thats a heck of a lot better than apple have managed.
There is a HUGE difference between "copying ideas from another game" (which is what most people do) and trying to copy a game right down to the fine gameplay details (frozen bubble)

I remember when most people's music collections were midi. Then 5MB was a lot! :)

Two main reasons.
1) Unless you are running a server or pirating 24/7, then you may as well turn the computer off. Those things do use electricity you know!
2) Laptops have to be turned off really (and there are lots of laptops where hibernating doesn't work properly in linux).
Just FYI, I've just installed 1.0. It does here (512MB, 1.2Ghz) seem noticably nippier than 0.9, both in terms of opening folders and starting up.

One of the quickest definitions of prime is "A number divisable only by 1 and itself.". 1 satisfies this.
Now you know (if you ever read this..)

I'm insulted that you think I don't know 42 is the answer to life the universe and everything :)
However, I was amused in this case that 42 (the answer everyone always gives) happened to be so close to the actual answer (49)
Actually, the answer (to the second part of the problem at least) is 49 in this case :) close but no cigar.
Goddamn, who rated this informative?
:)

OK then so we get this USB key.
And we install our controls to it
And any new graphics drivers
And any new controller/CD/IDE/motherboard drivers
And any updates to the game which come out
And any updates to the operating system
And we've GOT THE FREAKING OPERATING SYSTEM!
