  1. Mountain Dew on What Can You Do With $100? · · Score: 1

Wait for Walmart (ich!) or Kroger to start a $2.50/12pack promo on Dew. You could wait for a $2.00/12pack, but those usually come with quantity limitations.

Assuming a %9.725 sales tax rate (avoid it if you dare!):

    $2.50*1.09725 = $2.74/12pack
$100/2.74 = 36.50. We'll round down, so I guess you can afford a candy bar too.

    36*12 = 432 cans of Dew!

If you're on a two-can-a-day habbit like I, that's about seven months of Mountain Dew, sweet nectar of life that it is.

    Thank you.

  3. Look Mom, I'm invisible! ....Mom? on How Much Respect Do You Get? · · Score: 1

I'm an undergraduate student who was recently picked up as the assistant coordinator of our campus media dept. At the same time, a recently graduated guy became the coordinator.

I have an office, an extension, a fancy name tag, an email address, and about a dozen student workers. Yet when my boss and I walk down the hall, people (even those who know me from before the job) greet him and ignore me. I jokingly pointed it out to him once, but then we started watching for it, and realized that it happens almost every time we see someone.

If I have too little respect amongst staff and faculty, I have too much from student workers, many of which are older and further along in their studies than I. Last month I told a senior that if he refers to me one more time as "Mister (lastname)" I would make him clean the filters in all the projectors with his hands.

I've lost all friends amongst those who used to be my peers, and staff completely ignore me. It's the worst of both worlds! :)

I guess it's a testimony to my percieved valuation of the education here that I stayed. I started working at Circuit City 30 hours a week to make ends meet, and it was tough.

Then I met a girl in the same situation, and helped support her. We got engaged. It was *rough*. I remember very well the sick feeling I got every time I started our 1985 Ford LTD.

But then she graduated and got a good job, which meant a good car and real groceries. We get married in 59 days.

So I guess what I'm trying to say isn't directly related to the thread. As one who's just 'gotten over the hump', I can tell you that it's changed me completely. Remember: Make responsible, non-lazy decisions now, and it'll probably pay off. Taking a year off, without some VERY specific reason, is asking for trouble. If you manage to hit the "responsibility" thing while you're out of school, you won't go back.

Much of the reasons for the shortages were genre related... Let me explain:

Halo 2 had no shortages, because for the most part people played at home, alone. It was simply a matter of getting more stuff out there.

WoW had to fully support every copy of WoW with bandwidth, GMs, etc. Through luck or poor planning, they weren't prepared for the success, and their infrastructure just wasn't ready. These things don't scale as easily as the "print more media" type games. To just print more would be to degrade the experience, uh, even further.

Amen on the 2500 calories. It may, in fact, be more.

I started on a calorie reduction diet (inspired by the hacker's diet) about a month ago. I was under the mistaken assumption that my normal calorie intake would be about 2200 calories. So, I figured, 1400cal/day should do the trick. Now, I was 21yrs, male, 218lbs. The 1400 was doable but tough... I was a little scared when I lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks. I did more research into what I really needed when I started getting weak during the day and sleeping 9 hours/day.

So I jumped up to normal intake again, though I certainly watch it more. I'll eventually drop to 1800 or so to get down to a target weight of about 180, but right now I'm losing weight faster than I want to, and can't stop it. I'm told that if I stay regular for a week or two, I'll stabilize..

That was rambling, but I guess my point to all desire weight-loss is... Yes, the lost weight feels and looks FANTASTIC, but it's not worth it when you lose it too fast. Be reasonable!

  8. Student Workers on Unattended Equipment Loan System? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm one of the two staffers for my University's Instructional Technology and Campus Media Office (Whew!) and all I can say is: student workers. We keep 10 or so around for 6-10 hours per week. They take requests, make equipment deliveries, and generally follow our every nefarious whim as far as checking out equipment. The university pays them tax-free $5.25/hour. They love it because %90 of the time they can sit and do homework, surf the web, etc.

It's great for us because we're free to work on more involved projects without worrying that Dr. Smith isn't going to get her LaserDisc player on time. Student workers are also neat to have around.. We maintain a very casual, but very efficient, atmosphere in the office.

While what you're doing MAY be possible without human help, I get the feeling that any automated solution will cause you to spend more time babysitting it than doing your job.

Good luck, and don't forget to change the air filters on those projectors!

In my Accounting/Economics courses (not counting the tax ones) I get so bored that my mind drifts aimlessly. Though I find the subjects pretty easy, I can still miss large portions of classes through daydreaming and have serious catching up to do at exam time. :)

No solutions yet to the inadequacy in the math courses, but I figured out that if I do something mindless but entertaining while in class, I follow at just the right pace. This usually means a simple game on my PDA, but for the really dry stuff I've resorted to eBooks. The arguments at the site list things like the "need to scratch" to strengthen leg muscles. They must never have had a declawed cat for more than a few months. They get *incredibly* strong in their front legs, especially when you play with them often like we do. They still do their "scratching" routine on the furniture, but of course it's harmless.

One note about declawing... it's ONLY FOR INDOOR CATS. Although a couple of the cats are fully capable of pummeling the family bulldog with said front paws, I wouldn't feel right letting them fend for themselves outside.

They're quite happy, healthy, and well adjusted living in our mid-size house.
