As Churchill said, 'a fanatics is someone who can't change his mind, and won't change the subject'...I'm sick of the nutjobs who bore you to tears while they try to convert you to their cause - and there are plenty of them, of all denominations. Suggestions as to an appropriate badge or sign to make 'em easy to avoid, please.

I don't work in a cube, so the PC option is out. And I'm not going to waste money on a laptop, just so it can sit out and get dusty from my work environment. I've been a SIRIUS subscriber for three years and loved their programming. With the merge, my blues channel is all jacked up, and Boneyard is not as good as Buzzsaw was. At least they haven't messed with Classic Vinyl - yet. I have not noticed yakking too much in between songs either. To each their own though....

  16. Re:XM is more than just satellite radio on iPhones, FStream and the Death of Satellite Radio · · Score: 1

I'll agree - it's worth every penny. I've been a SIRIUS subscriber since moving to Atlanta from the DFW area four years ago. At the time, the only choices in ATL were country or hip hop, neither of which I like. I also make a 2000 mile round-trip road trip each Christmas and it's damn nice to be able to listen to the same channel, without interruptions, the whole drive. It's either that or bring a few mp3 cd's. I listen to SIRIUS at work as well. That's why I mainly bought it. Unlike most of us slashdotters, I don't sit in a cube farm all day. I'm a airline mechanic, working on the shop floor. My SIRIUS unit sits on top of my toy box all day, and I'm usually not too far from it. Internet radio would work, but I don't own a laptop, nor do I want one. Everyone has their own opinion for and against paying for satellite radio so I won't argue my point, but for me it works great and I'm very pleased with the programming that I listen to. I'd hate to see it go toes up......

Mail ain't the answer either. Most US airlines haul the mail for the USPS, it's what keeps them going in the downturn years. That's how they started back in the day. For most airlines, contractors sort the mail (letters are pre-boxed at the Post Office, packages if small enough, go in mail bags (at the PO) and the over sized stuff goes as is. A few years ago, at the DFW airport, a credit card theft ring was busted. It was those same contractors doing the thievery. I've read other articles in which it was the actual airlines' employees stealing stuff, either in the mail sort facility, or down in the bag room (stolen golf clubs come to mind). If you fly, I'd keep my valuables in my carry on, or leave them at home.

I know it's illegal in most states to listen to music with earbuds while operating a motorcycle on public roads, but I wear mine to drown out the sound of my exhaust AND wind noise. The buds I wear (Skullcandy, about 30 bux @ Best Buy) seal the ear canal, canceling out outside noise, so I don't have to turn my mp3 player up as loud. I recently did a dosimeter test while riding my scoot ('04 Honda VTX 1300S with stock exhaust). Riding at 70 mph, turtle shell helmet, no windshield, the sound level at my ear was over 110 db just from wind and exhaust.

When I think of satellite radio, I think of this: *Major genres unrepresented. *Station playlists that would become predictable within a week. *Sub-genres within all genres utterly unrepresented in general (for example, one Metal station on all of Sirius, and it only plays death metal). *A whole slew of stations essentially devoted to playing the exact same stuff that you hear on standard Top 40 radio. *Commercials, despite being advertised as commercial-free. *Annoying DJs (the receivers display the name/artist playing, you do NOT need DJs trying to be funny between every song). *Oh, and a monthly fee on top of that.

Frankly, satellite radio was created 10 years too late. Why should I put up with satellite radio when I can use my mp3 player?

Which major genres are unrepresented? I believe all the 'majors' are there.. I'll listen to the same channel all week, from 0600 to 1400 Eastern time and have yet to find playlists 'predictable' I believe Buzzsaw AND Hair Nation play metal. I haven't listened to top 40 crap in 25 years, so I wouldn't know about that one... I have yet to hear commercials in three plus years of listening to Sirius.... Annoying DJ's? They only blab for 5 seconds every 4-6 songs. Compared to the local clowns/morning show garbage, I can deal with 5 seconds. Besides - I pause mine when I walk away from my work station so I'll skip over the yakking anyway. Monthly fee? You don't have cable/dish tv, do you??

  23. Re:Go Satellite instead... on HD Radio Recording In the US? · · Score: 1

I've had Sirius for over three years now. Bought it after moving to Atlanta from Texas. ATL radio SUX. It's either hiphop or country, or was at the time anyway. I've heard so many good bands/songs that were 'new to me', and that's mainly on the classic rock channel. I can no longer listen to commercial radio due to the commercials, shytty morning shows, etc. For me, the $13 a month is well worth it. I do a few road trips a year as well - with Sirius I no longer have to bring a stack of cd's or listen to static between major cities. Satellite radio may not be for everyone, but it works for me.

Growing up on 'tornado alley', every time a warning came on the tv we'd hold our breath waiting to see which county(s) were affected, then hope to hell it was not coming our way. Since someone mentioned the 'redneck' theory - and yes children I thought it was funny too - I might add that my family and I are not inbreeders nor rednecks. That being said, my parents current home sits in a subdivision where each home is on a one acre lot, and the home prices range from $500k to $1.5 million. In the ten years they have lived there, that subdivision has been hit twice. There's no mobile homes around. There's a ranch down the road that raises Thoroughbreds. It was hit both times. Living ANYWHERE in the plains states puts you at more risk for tornadoes than say Arizona. With the Gulf Stream - warm, moist air - moving north out of Texas, and the Jet Stream - cool, dry air - moving east, that's the general area where they collide touching off severe storms. It ain't rocket science .....

  25. Re:Well Duh on Efficiency? Think Racing Cars, Not Hybrids · · Score: 1

I suggest everybody start riding motorcycles. For one, it would improve their gas mileage tremendously, and secondly, I wouldn't have to worry anymore about morons in their SUVs changing lanes without so much as looking or setting their turn signal, and almost running over me when I'm on mine. Hey, just an idea. And Darwin will take care of the idiots, something that SUVs are currently preventing. When gas hit the three dollar mark, I started riding my motorcycle (VTX 1300 Retro, 45+ mpg) to work and left the gas hog (F150, less than 20 mpg) at home. You don't buy a full size pickup for gas mileage, so I'm not bitching. My commute is 25 miles each way, on I-75 in Atlanta. I could live closer, but then I'd have to bar my windows, get a gun/Pit Bull and learn Ebonics. Between the 18 wheelers, brain dead rednecks, and the sistas (yeah I might be being racist here, sue me) on the cell phone, I'm surprised I'm not dead yet. Every cager is a potential threat to a motorcyclist. On numerous occasions I've had cagers yakking on the cell try to take my lane from me without so much as a turn signal, or even looking to see if it's clear. As stated above - no one gives a rat's ass about anyone but themselves. Be kind to us 'bikers'. Look twice - you could save a life.
