Here in Canada, the Animatrix DVD was about $25. For $30, you could get the DVD as well as the CD soundtrack. This makes *sense*; I don't own a single soundtrack in my CD collection of which I don't also own the DVD.
On the other hand, not everybody (*gasp*, I know!) has a DVD player, and moreover I'm not even sure how easy it is to rip music from a DVD. Never mind the fact that it's probably evil...
You're being sarcastic, but it's not such a bad idea. Alcohol kills. Cigarettes kill. These things are legal according to society, and ya sure, there might be many people who can drink/smoke sensibly, but how many innocent people do drunk drivers and second-hand smoking kill? These aren't innocent, innoculous substances, either; they are both known to KILL. And yet you make fun of me.
Why should drug, alcohol and cigarette manufacturers be allowed to live when their products kill? It's as simple as that.
Why was this modded funny? Drug sentencing in the US needs to get a lot stricter -- but maybe y'all shouldn't bother with jail. Instead, make 'em take all that meth in a 24-hour period. What does this do? First, after displaying the guy's foaming body on the 6 o'clock news, it teaches people that drugs kill. Second, it makes *sure* that this guy will never manufacture drugs again. Third, it saves money on jail -- 2% of all Americans are, right NOW, spending time in a US jail. Think about that!
...'The PS2/Xbox title, a Surreal-developed follow-up to last year's disappointing Fellowship Of The Ring, was apparently "not going to achieve the strict standards for our Tolkien games"...'
Well, hmm. I would argue that any game based on an already-existing property (be it a film, novel, or what have you) is not going to live up to the expectations created by the original product. A book is meant to be a book; the ideas, characters and plot contained therein are created specifically for the literary medium. Attempting to transfer these ideas to a radically different medium (i.e., a non-interactive literature ported to an interactive game) is going to result in loss of quality. The same is true for the movies; non-interactive literature to non-interactive film is better, but the films are not going to convey the books as they were originally intended.
In the case of Tolkien and *any* game based upon his works, it's like playing Beethoven on a $5,000 stereo system, and recording it to a tape deck with a microphone held up to one of the speakers. Ya, it *sounds* like Beethoven, but what's with the guy opening a bag of chips in the background?
I think that I speak for the majority of gamers when I say that we prize originality, not spin-offs from movies, books, card games or whatever, when it comes to video games.
TO WIT: Of course gamers' expectations are going to be dashed by the majority of games which have been transfered from a different medium. Then again, show me a RPG based on Rushdie's _The_Satanic_Verses_, and I'll gladly eat my words.
Or, one could argue that, by being followed in the first place, they obviously committed a crime and the police are just in the usage of GPS technology.
The price of a Civic hybrid is more than $10,000 more expensive than a normal Civic. However, don't they get somewhere between 750-800 km per tank of gas? The Insight gets over 900 km, I'm sure.
I *am* an adult, and I own a GBA SP. I've also owned a GBC and GBA original. There is absolutely *no* reason for rational people to buy one of these things, as it's WAY cheaper to buy a cell phone and a GBA SP separately. This way, at least there's tons of games for the gaming device!
Nokia, seriously, you're going to screw yourself over with your latest device. Do you really think that you can go up against the GBA with what you've got and WIN?
1) Buy a bike. 2) Ride a bike. 3) ??? 4) Don't pay tolls.
It's pretty simple:)
(And for those who argue that this isn't a practical solution, it is for me, at least -- I live in Saskatchewan, Canada, and save about $20-50 per month on gas/bus fees and vehicle registration. My bike was $200. You do the math.)
Of course, it'd be filtered if I actually wrote it, but there was a certain 8000 word article that Spider wrote when the Beast became president, consisting of the same word written 8000 times...
If Rockstar ported GTA to the GC, would that force you to purchase it? Hey, I'm making CrapFest 2003 for the GC, retailing at $300. Can I put you down for a copy?
The nice thing about consoles is *choice*. Just because you don't want to run over people on the GC, doesn't mean that other people don't.
...written by profs! One textbook I'm reading for a class this semester, written by three profs with doctorates, is so full of spelling and grammatical mistakes as to be completely unbearable (especialyl to an anal-retentive English major such as myself). For example:
-"Another key element of the Indigenous education is that of the older people mentoring the young in the culture."
-"The children worked side-by-side with the Old People and learned how to do many things by watching them and being shown how to do things."
-"Certain activites, such as ceremonies, of course, contained much to learn."
WTF? I'm paying $40 for this textbook in order to wade through crap that's barely English? These mistakes were found in the first 20 pages of the book, amazingly enough; I dread reading the remaining 300 pages.
I think that we should worry about teacher education first before building ubercomputers to grade students' papers.

That's what happens when you combine Weapons of Mass Destruction with electronics.
The pics for the Zodiac look very impressive, but why would i pay $300-400 USD for such a machine when I can get a bottom-rung PalmPilot for $100 USD and a GBA SP for $100, and have access to the hundreds and hundreds of GBA/GBC/GB games? Also, when I buy a GBA game, I know that it will be compatible with Nintendo's next handheld -- what guarantee would I have that any game I bought for the Zodiac would be able to be used on any other platform? Too much risk.
What they *really* need to do is come up with some productivity software for my GBA, and skip the whole hybrid thing.
I don't know about you, but I read/. for the discussions, not the articles. If a bad article inspires great discussion, who cares about the article?

Oldest trick in the book. Faction A is fighting faction B. A is losing, so they say to B, "Okay, okay, just give us this territory and some money, and we'll call it quits, okay buddy?"
Perceived weakness *is* weakness. Time to go for the jugular. Anybody thought about using www.riaa.com as an MP3 server and getting them to subpoena themselves?
Rantz Hosely wasn't even a PR guy... he was somehow thrust into the midst of the horde that was the Moo3 forums and was forced to field question after question after ridiculous question.
"Personally, I doubt anyone will be (intentionally) trying the MOO3 experiment again any time soon..."
No kidding! The game was just not FUN! String along a fan base for years, then release a game that only hard-core addicts still want to play? No thanks!
"...some people don't LIKE multiplayer, they should have an option to pay less and only purchase single player..."
I completely agree with this statement. A few minutes ago, I wouldn't have given HL2 a second glance (never got into the first game), but now, because of the incentive to buy just the single player package, I think I'm going to have to check it out.
Imagine games like Neverwinter Nights -- how much would just the SP campaign have cost? A *LOT* less than the $75 CAD (plus tax) that I paid for it. Heck, $40 for the SP game and I wouldn't have sold it on eBay.
I *never* play multiplayer. I definitely hope that, in the future, companies follow this business model, especially considering that my *ahem* current attitude towards playing comp games is slightly less than legal (after being burned by C&C Generals, Freedom Force, the egarious price of NWN, and the infamous MOO3 debacle).
The Gameboy does one thing, and it does it well: play games. I don't want my GBA SP to play movies, TV, music, or any other such crap. I want it to play games, and for what it does, it's terrific.
Various add-on products, such as gray-area flash GB carts, add on compatibility in these areas, including the ability to play Nintendo (original) games. Now *this* is a feature that the GBA should have!
But I digress. All it'll take for Sony to beat the GBA is the following:
1) Cheap hardware
2) Cheap software, preferably in a non-proprietary format (mini-cds, mini-discs, for example)
3) GOOD (fun, good looking) games running on GOOD (fast, good looking) hardware
That's it. Oh, and compatibility with GBA carts would be nice too.
That's
If it weren't for the completely useless 3d engine, Republic would be *awesome*. The concept is great, but the 3ngine just slows down the game and makes it much more difficult than it really needed to be.
I dunno whether it needed to be a boardgame, but certainly less graphics. The game isn't a FPS!
It's articles like these (and the ensuing comments) that make me feel good about my decision to play single-player. Why would I want other people cheating in a game when *I* want to be the only cheater?
Awesome! S.W.A.T. is out? Forget isonewz, /. is the place to be for moviez releases!

It's also obviously not the job of /. posters to determine whether the parent was speaking earnestly or sarcastically.

I, for one, welcome our new GPS overlords.

Good point, though... I bike as much as possible during the warmer part of winter, but during the hardcore -40oC part, I usually take the bus.
You'd be surprised at what kind of weather you can actually bike through, if you're sufficiently bundled up! Sure it's cold, but it's cheap!
