It has a serial port, so if you want to use dialup, you can always attach a real modem. Those are well supported on Linux, far moreso than internals.
Yup. Besides, external modems are no longer supported out-of-the-box on Vista. I tried to hook up a serial-line US Robotics Sportster 56k on my dad's laptop lately. Windows Vista simply ignored it, and proposed no solution to try and detect it. Kubuntu, on the other hand, set it up immediately with KPPP. That was one more reason for my dad to abandon Windows and switch completely to Linux.

Sure. But, for instance, in the SCO vs. IBM case, which is crucial for the future of the FOSS movement (or maybe not so much now that Novell has just stomped SCO into the ground), you weren't expecting IBM to just sit on their asses while SCO was taking them to trial and punching them in the face with libelous press releases ?

That battle was clearly one of ours, and one of the FOSS-supporting parties (IBM) did fight back. It also turned out that Novell had a word to say in this too, but I am still awaiting the final judgment in SCO vs IBM. It ain't over till the fat man throws a chair, as someone else already said here.

Well, as far as embedded software development is concerned, the rise of the Linux kernel was a huge blow to existing embedded OS kernels.

How many people still remember pSOS, VRTX, VxWorks (which was largely based on GNU development tools but with a proprietary real-time kernel) and a few others that were popular till the late 90s ? Of course, when you need a tiny, real-time kernel, Linux doesn't cut it yet, although that is also about to change.

But on the whole, you now have countless Linux-based embedded "solutions" on the market for various types of controllers, offering web servers or Java servlets for the user interface, at very affordable prices (forget about the $5000 per developer licence for proprietary systems), with a wealth of open-source software waiting to be ported to these new platforms. Guess who's happy ?

As a former DVB engineer, having studied the terrestrial standards for digital broadcasting, I can tell you that this fear of interference is total bullshit. The level of signal redundancy (using Viterbi encoding) combined with the forward error correction (FEC) mechanisms introduced in the signal, practically reduce the risk of interference to none.

COFDM, the modulation used in Europe, may be more robust in that area than 8VSB used in the US, still I don't believe it would be a serious concern.

I think the biggest fear for those broadcasters is, as usual, money : if those bandwidths, which they are given free and exclusive access to by the FTC, were to be auctionned off to telco operators, they might eventually have to pay to remain on air.
