Don't look at me, the parent was the one comparing AMD's dual core offerings to the Pentium D. I'm well aware that the initial Opteron offering is NOT in the same market segment as the Pentium D, in fact the last sentence in my post stated such.
But since AMD has yet to announce a launch date for consumer level dual core processors, there's nothing else to compare the Pentium D against.
AMD plans to charge a bit less than twice the price of an equivalent single-core model for each dual-core chip. This puts the aforementioned 875 (2.2GHz 800 series) at an expected $2649 according to CNET, with prices going down from there as you go down in series and in speed grade.
A point we made in the first article was that Intel's pricing strategy for dual core is extremely aggressive, with the cheapest 2.8GHz Pentium D soon to be introduced at $241.
While I might concede that the AMD 2.2ghz would probably trounce the 2.8ghz Pentium D, the 10x price premium for the AMD by far outweighs any performance increases. But again, the dual core Opterons aren't intended for home consumers.
I am a proud owner of an Asus P4T-E (with an i850 chipset), w/ 1gb of PC800 RDRAM memory. I specifically chose RDRAM when I built the machine back in 2001, because the only other choice at the time was DDR-200/266 w/ the original i845 chipset, or PC133 w/ the same chipset. (if you recall, performance of the original i845 was less than spectactular)
All of my friends questioned my choice of RDRAM when building my system, saying I wouldn't be able to overclock (which i was, easily, P4 1.6a @ 2.3ghz w.o. any fantastic cooling solutions) and that I wouldn't be able to use that same memory when I upgraded (I haven't upgraded yet, but many of them have, and guess what? They purchased new 'go faster' DDR sticks when they bought their new board/cpu...)
As for your buddy being stuck w/ 128mb of RDRAM because of no local availability... Have you heard of this website called 'eBay'?? I hear it's quite nifty.

I think you're confusing Acclaim with Interplay... Acclaim made some crappy games, there's no excusing that, but they didn't axe BIS... that was Interplay... (or I'm misunderstanding your post, which is entirely possible)
I have a Thompson drive in my xbox, and I have had absolutely 0 read errors... Of course, I play all of my games from the HDD, and never use the optical drive at all:)

They don't HAVE to put out a documentary... The popular media (CNN in particular) does that on a daily basis

When an android, such as R2-D2 or C-3PO, barely looks human, we cut it a lot of slack. It seems cute. We don't care that it's only 50 percent humanlike.
If you know ANYONE who even VAGUELY resembles R2-D2, I want to see pictures!!
(yes, I know they were using them as examples of androids, but jesus... I think using C3PO alone would have sufficed:P
Initiate chat with any visitor to your web site. Plus, have them able to interact with you via Live Help. Your visitors are no longer mere IP addresses; they are alive, and now you can assist and engage with them simply by selecting a visitor and clicking "Chat" (and your visitors don't need any software, either!)
So you CAN greet them, just you probably can't add a shopping cart plug-in yet:)
Guess what, he never called you back because you were a self-righteous caller...
The most annoying thing on the planet (for a helpdesk agent, obviously not for the customer) is a customer who thinks (or even DOES) he knows more than the people he is calling... You're calling them for support, and when they try to help you, you treat them like idiots... I really can't see why they didn't want to go that extra mile for you!
Oh, guess what... There are multiple aspect ratios for Widescreen DVD... But you already knew that, didn't you?
Your government did try to switch over, not once, not twice, but three times! (with limited success, according to the 2nd link)
Also according to that 2nd link,

Not sure what that means to a typical U.S. Citizen, but it appears the U.S. will be metric someday:)

No offense, but you, sir, are a moron.

Oh, by the way... Dell still sells RDRAM
You actually think nitpickers read the article?
