"Microsoft contends that it's because the software giant is so popular with consumers."
Maybe it's because most of the people who understand what the "Microsoft Tax" is haven't paid it in years, thus leaving only the people who think MS Word is Windows is IE not joining the lawsuit...
This is exactally the point I was going to bring up. I once held a LAN at my former school district's central office which had large rooms they will rent to anyone (for a nice fee). They almost didn't rent the room to me (as a paying adult) because of those very same fears (none of it happened, tho, and the party was a great success).
There's no WAY you'll be allowed to play games like CS, Quake, Starcraft, World of Warcraft, etc. at school, especially as a school-related fundraiser.
Your best bet would be to hold the LANs outside of school completely and simply donate the profits (which will be small - LANS are expensive when they get big) to your school.
I agree. I installed 10.1 Official when it went to.torrents to clubmembers, and I'm basically sorry I did.
I've basically noticed the polish leaving MDK since 8.0 (well maybe 8.2). 9.2 was the last one that didn't REALLY piss me off. I installed 10.1 hoping it would fix the flaws of 10.0, but its made enough of them worse that I'm considering leaving.
The biggest flaw I've found is their urpmi gui ("Mandrakelinux Update") will crash on "bad signature"s. Thats, fine. But it taints the RPM database by marking them installed, and refuses to try again. Then I have to go muck around at a shell to get the graphical tool working again. Oh well.
When I worked for Walgreens, we kept our tapes for over a year. And we used them for everything from catching kids stealing pipe tobacco to IDing hit-and-runs in our parking lot.
If you're really that worried about it, why not just drive to the nearest branch? Even then its not 100% secure, because the teller is still using a comptuer connected to the bank's network, which is in turn connected to the internet (even of not directly).
Knoppix should be enough for what you're talking about, tho.
I'm building a submarine using a PC/104 stack. Found almost all the parts on eBay, including a relay controller and 20 channel servo/stepper motor controller, as well as the PC/104 mainboard.
This is exactally what I bought, but there are others.
My requirements are way different than yours, however. I'm going to require a rather large control program onboard the sub to reach the level of atonomy I'll need for deep dives.
I know you were joking, but I recently decied to try out Vonage. With a cable connection you cant even tell its using the internet, and the ability to get a real phone number anywhere (well, almost) in the US beats a landline hands down.
After 2 weeks with it, I've decided I'm going to drop my landline.
The ultimate thing we have to complain about is that after ATTBI took over we went from 4-5Mbits (8Mbits peak) to 1Mbit (1.5Mbit peak), for only $7/mo MORE. Thats right, ATTBI REDUCED our service while charging us MORE. Since Comcast took over for ATTBI, they've upped our download cap a bit, trying to be the "good guy"... But it still stands that we're getting less and paying more than what we signed up for.
I emailed VeriSign about that issue, and here is what I got back:

I disagree. I have several pirated versions of windows laying around, but I purchased SuSE 8.1 PRO and Mandrake PowerPack 8.0. And I think I might buy Mandrake 9.2 when it comes out. I simply dont want to give any more money to MS; nothing stops me from paying for software that I actually enjoy using.
Dont ask that they kindly block the number, but instead report it as harrassment and threaten leagal charges. Have Verizon put a trace on the calls (you'll have to work with them on that one) to figure out where they're REALLY coming from, then contact the BBB and your state's Attourney General.
As far as I know, making unsolicited calls to a cellphone is illegal since YOU are paying for them to do this to you. Next time they call you, call that 1-800 number and tell them to remove your information from the database and that if they sell it you will press charges.
I know I'd be really pissed if I were in your position.
A good idea to go along with philips screwdrivers is a socket set. Most standard computer screws have a hex head around the x for the philips, and its sometimes easier to use a socket in tight spaces (they've saved my ass many a time)...
They should be availible at most good hardware/tool stores- I'm sure RadioShack has them.
Actually, Title VIII Sec. 802 of the PATRIOT Act defines "domestic terrorism" as acts that:
"(A)Involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the crimial laws of the United States or of any State;
(B)appear to be intended to (i) intimidate or coerce a civilian population (ii) influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
(C) Occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States."

There's prolly some British animal rights group picketing all over the country, protesting thier potential use of hamsters. It is, of course, ok to use people to power computers, as long as you dont harm anything with fur in the process.
If there's one thing Ive learned from upgrading over the years, its that software companies will find a way to make ANY new, impossilbe-to-utilize-100% processor come to its knees. Give 'em some time, and all new games/OSes/office apps will require 64bit processors as well as all the RAM you can afford.
If you have a full tower (instead of a "mid" tower that many people have) then ventilation is less of a problem.
It would be possible (and I have been thinking about doing this with my 4 free bays) to build a plexiglass tank that would extend over the powersupply. As long as the two rear vents are left open (and the air can get to them) you should still run nice and cool.
The only other concern with having living things inside your computer is air and food (and water, if it's a terrarium). I imagine putting a removable window on the top, sealed with rubber/silicone and some screws/catches, wich would allow feeding.
Actually, in 2k atleast, if you create a shortcut to whatever program you want to run as administrator then check the "run as different user" checkbox on the general tab of the properties, you can run any program as any user from any user. (except control pannels)
There is also the "runas" command if you're at the shell. IIRC, the format is something like runas \u:(DOMAIN)/(USER) (PROGRAM) but its been awhile since I was on an NT box...
We've come so far ahead in technology that we now have Recordable Read Only Memory!?
We already have EEPROMs: Electrically Eraseable Programmable Read Only Memory. In fact, there's almost certainly one in the computer you used to post (unless its a Mac). Its not as big a leap as you think it is.
Correct. Slandering your neighbor is a CIVIL offense, and will let you be the defendant of a nice big lawsuit, but nothing more.
Similarly, if you yell "fire!" in a theater, you'll probably get sued because of the resulting injuries and a bill when the fire department comes, and you might be arrested for reckless endangerment (since it might cause people to be trampled), but you wont be charged with yelling, "fire!".

I can't tell if this is good or bad- competition will help prices, but do we want the FCC involved?

This is already done in Mozilla 1.3 and above (I also seem to recall it being in 1.2, but its been quite awhile) in addition to popup blocking.
Your first problem most likely comes from a broken wire in the cable. Than can happen if it get stepped on or jammed in a door or something.

"B" (aka OSR2) has USB support, as well as major bugfixes.
