I had that same problem.... I have 2 big fans: A 120mm Delta, and a 5000RPM Thermaltake on my CPU. I figured out which was the louder of the two (turned out to be the Thermaltake) and I stuck a variable resistor (POT) between it and the powersupply (some soldering, wire cutting, etc) and punched a hole in my 3.5" drive bay cover, so i can control it without opening my case.
When I turn the knob all the way to the right (max resistance), I can only hear a *very* slight whine coming from the CPU fan, and it runs at about the same temperature when im not doing anything intensive like Quake III. (I run at about 47 degrees C, and its an Athlon XP 1800+ overclocked to 1.63GHz)
I'm sure he's geeky enough to peronalize the greeting.... "Im affraid I cant do that, shaun_gordon. I could see you asking for recipies over the phone, shaun_gordon."
I agree. Back when I had 56k, I would have given a lot if some of the things I was trying to download were as SMALL as 32MB. Ever tried to download an update for a game like CounterStrike? Each update is 70-100MB.
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I usually end up throwing things...

I was programming back in the Good 'ol Days, and one of those ACTUALLY HAPPENED! I was programming in QBX under PC-DOS 7.0, and nothing was working right... so i suck in a statement similar to the following, and it executed!:
if 1=2 then print "OOPS!"
Needless to say, I didnt go back to programming for the rest of the day...
Does anyone know what kind of network connection this thing will have? I didnt see it listed in the article...
It seems to me that to make this thing really usefull, we neeed either (a) Major ISPs to offer wireless connections(not just "moble" for cell phones) or (b)This is just a wardriver's dream...
Or they could sell them to the military... If you throw a cd at someone, it can hurt. And if it hits a wall, it shatters and sends shrapnel everywhere... Imagine if you designed some sort of rubberband-based launcher for it;)
I just tested Mozilla 1.0 without the modified hosts file, and it sill fails (yes, i cleared my cache). Is there any browser in Windows that isnt vulnerable to this?
I just tested Mozilla 1.0 running under Windows 2k, and it failed (displayed the page with no error). The thing I dont understand is how its much of a bug if you have to edit your hosts file. (Unless, of course, someone hacks your DNS server). Perhaps its been fixed in later versions of Mozilla?
If you want somthing higher power, try JDR.com. Their Industrial Components section contains several "One board computers" at speeds up to an 866 PIII and the backplanes to power them (I couldnt find them in the 15 seconds I was looking, but there there).
PC104 is used in extremely embeded situations where the primary purpose is data relay, logging, etc. Actually, a PC104 stack might suit your needs exactally. Have you thought about writing the onboard control program under DOS? I know DOS is old and antiquated, but it is good for embeding in a low-power computer like the PC104.
What kind of specs are you looking for? What is this robot going to be doing that requires a 1Ghz+ computer?
IF you dont let the dust build up by useing a vacuum onece a month or so, that drasticaly reduces the fire hazard. Of course, that doesnt mean your CPU fan wont fail, causing your CPU to burn right through your motherboard if you dont have overheat protection.;-)
If *I* came up with them, why should someone else tell me I can't use them because I came up with them while I was employed by them?
Actually, some companies require their employees to sign agreements that basically make anything you invent theirs (Like Woz in "Pirates of Silicon Valley"). If such an agreement was signed, then his old company is *completely* within their rights to deny him use of the design in this case.
The problem with "feelable egdes" is that as the bill gets warn out, the paper will start to loose its stiffness. As that happens, it will become increasingly difficult to feel the edges of the bill. As for the sizes, I personally prefer if all my bills line up in my walet. However, I saw somewhere that Braille was used on bills in another country (Canada, maybe?). That seems like a good idea, if it can also be prevented from wearing out.
Color would be extremely usefull when sorting money at a till. Sometimes when I only glance at a bill i mistake a 1 for a 10, and once even a 2 for a 20.

I can see the headlines now... "Microsoft Closes for a Week... Microsoft temporarily closed its doors today after thousands of dissatisfied Windows users hurled stones at the buildings on Microsoft's main campus, breaking nearly every window. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries..."
The guv'ment is not about to let us have encrypted cell phones. They want more control, not less. I seem to remember them getting mad at propriatary email encryption awhile back (or im just making stuff up again).
On another note, wont it drain your batteries faster if your phone is transmitting more? I dont know about you, but I try to make my charge last as long as possible.
Since the bulb is not even on the market yet, what is to stop the company from improving the design at the last minute? And where did the author of the article get this information to begin with? It seems kind of shaky.
It seems to me that if this *really* poses a problem that it will be noticed and dealt with quickly, assuming that a sufficent number of people with high speed wireless live in an area with one of these lightbulbs being used...
It could work, but I've seen some pretty stupid users. I fixed an NT4 file server at my highschool not too long ago. The home directories were set wrong, and students work would dissapear. EVERY DAY we told them to back their stuff up while I went through and reconfigured the server and the clients to use real roaming profiles.
Not a single student even copied their work to a floppy. And we were providing them with blank disks! Every day someone would come up and say "I lost my work" and we would just laugh at them, because they didn't backup when we told them to. The really sad thing is that even the kids who lost stuff wouldnt back up!
My advice to you is to get all their work on the server and make backups from that. Users will not even be moved by a demonstration.
Just then Christopher Lee (Sauron/Count Dooku) steps out from behind Bill and says, "Gandolf, you must join with the dark side of the force... I mean," *looks around cautiously,* "Linux, you must join with our EULA!"

For what the kernel does, its worth every byte.
I got a stop error on my Windows 2000 box (on boot) after installing a DVD drive:
INACCESSABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this error, reboot. Otherwise, run chkdisk and check your computer for viruses.
How I was supposed to run chkdisk / Norton Antivirus, I know not.

In the popsci.com article (3rd paragraph) they mention that it looks like a Klingon Bird of Prey.
Besides, a Romulan bird of prey looks more like two birds glued together at the wingtips, with the bottom bird's head cut off.
No, CD-RWs are cheap now... We need DVD+RWs... Those are damn expensive. Or prehaps they would let us choose :)

But I bet that his old company doesn't care.
