    Fortunately, hosted on google code you can find "Market Enabler" which allows you to purchase from any regional market you like.

    But I'm curious, what do you mean "no unified payment system"? Google Checkout is a pleasure to use compared to any other online payment method I've had the misfortune of using.

    If China sufficiently builds up it's support industries at the same time as accelerating development, then propulsion comes from within.

    Microsoft Research don't get involved with the management of the business unit, and they don't do the kind of R&D you are talking about. They do CS with little or no practical application in Microsoft's product line, and publish papers.

    Don't be so quick with the witty movie quotes - "best effort" can mean different things. In networking "best effort" service comes with no guarantees. Above that you have your service level agreements.

    In common usage "best effort" is also something of a euphemism for "I'm not promising anything", so that fits too.

    Android's software distribution model is also "curated" if that's what floats your boat. But this is a business model, not a security model.

    Security can be enhanced, but only in the sense of limiting infection by removing an app from the store after it has been "outed" as malware. The thing is, an educated user can do the exact the same thing with their device without the need for a central authority.

    Android lets me choose to opt-out of dubious security in exchange for enhanced liberty. This is a strength that does not diminish the security model one iota.

    You also have to tick a box saying:

    Your phone and personal data are more vulnerable to attack by applications from unknown sources. You agree that you are solely responsible for any damage to your phone for loss of data that may result from using these applications."

    This is a social engineering attack, not an exploit in the Android system.

    It doesn't take a statement from the company. Just look at the devices they are offering. Users who want to run custom firmware aren't the kind to walk in and say "one android please". You do basic research. You check if custom ROMS are known to work. You don't buy Motorola.

    NONE of the above is suitable for government documentation. Even the top-secret stuff. Can you imagine the problems trying to extract data from archives that were "protected" decades ago by some flavor-of-the-month DRM solution?

    The tax pack software runs fine under wine. I know, I know, we shouldn't have to use wine. But you can. Funnily enough, I only got the idea after the tax department website said (paraphrasing here) "eh, try running it under wine stupid".

    h.264 is already the standard format for video on the web.

    It might [currently] be the most popular format, but W3C rules prohibit it from being a standard.

    It's what Flash uses.

    Flash is not a standard either.

    WebM's only real advantage is that it is free.

    That's one hell of an advantage. Unless you are a h.264 patent holder.

    You give all of your private information to goohle if you use Gmail too.

    The difference is night and day. The data you upload to Facebook belongs to Facebook, your email belongs to you.

    Google provides an email service. Facebook provides a publishing service. Which one of these services do you think comes with a reasonable expectation of privacy?

    Optical drives you or I purchase from LG, Toshiba, BenQ and LiteOn have a bumper to prevent disc damage. The drives found in retail beige boxes all have them too. Somebody directed the manufacturers to leave it out of Xbox drives. If Microsoft put their name to it, they wear the blame.

    Loaded words much? You could have just said your choices are to carry the fetus to term, or not to. But no, straight to murder and guilt. You aren't a priest or some shit are you?

    False dichotomy. Most unarmed populations are not ruled by tyrants or criminals. They just tend to shoot each other less.

    Lawful guns, and concealed-carry handguns in particular, disproportionately help women, the elderly, and the disabled, who tend to be physically less powerful than their attackers.

    In theory guns are a great equalizer, but in practice they only help the party who is prepared to carry a weapon for the purpose of employing deadly force. This is more far more likely to be the attacker then the victim.

    Then there is the fact that carrying a gun if you are NOT prepared to employ deadly force puts you in more danger then you would be without one (as the attacker will use it against you).

    Simply having a gun does not level the playing field. Pepper spray is far more suitable for self-defense against a more powerful attacker.

    Life may be cheap in China, but that is negligible compared to the cost of training a qualified stealth-fighter pilot, plus the hardware + support required to carry his role.

    That tells you how much all the turned-off stuff uses.

    Does it? Lets say you have a laptop with a 7800mAh battery that lasts on sleep mode for 18 hours. Wouldn't that would mean the RAM draws 433mA ?

    The Android source is freely available from a git repository hosted by the developer. You can improve or extend it however you like - and many people have. Crucially, community improvements have even been merged back into the main tree.

    Now, whether or not you can install your compiled system on a particular device is a legitimate concern - but I have trouble believing you would compare this to rooting iOS with a straight face.
