I haven't RTFA, but I imagine the 200 years is a realiability number, meaning it wouldn't break if you flipped it over twice a day, every day, for 200 years. It is supposed to provide light for 4 hours on a flip, which as another early poster calculated, probably isn't realistic either, but at least closer to realistic than 8 hours of light for 200 years.

Seems to me there is much more involved in networking and routing then a simple splitter (prism). Also, even if you do slow the light down, somehow you have to get information from the packet about its destination. Also, doesn't the dual nature of light suggest that light is the flow photons as well as electro-magnetic waves (flow of electrons)? Anyway, the point I was trying to get at is that I don't think the conversion from optical to electrical at the house has a significant effect on upstream/downstream capacity. Just doing some googling I wasn't able to quickly find any sources that compare the "velocity" of a signal in fiber versus the velocity of a signal in cat-6.

You do realize that an optical signal is an "electrical" signal right? So how are you going to make a router out of "optical" components, just a splitter? I don't see how that would work, but maybe I'm just dumb.

Wow, interesting post. My tax dollars pay for roads don't they? I am always envious of the snakes that get to sunbath in the road, so you know what, I'm gonna start sunbathing in the road!!! Lets see them kick me off of MY property. Furthermore, before NASA thinks about using my space shuttle again, they better come asking for my permission. I'm tired of them galavanting around the galaxy in MY space shuttle. Another thing I must have missed, are you somehow punishing the NCAA by not getting press credentials? Have you ever had press credentials? You make it sound as if the NCAA would give a damn that you didn't get press credentials, but maybe I am just misinterpreting your rambling post.

It would seem like these measurement biases could be calibrated out, but I guess it isn't that easy.

So can you define when you consider life to start and explain why? For me, while I can see the reservations against embryonic stem cell research, I cannot see reservations against this kind of research. I would imagine most people with reservations against embryonic stem cell research feel the same and you are just jumping to conclusions because you are just as guilty as the "us" vs "them" mentality.

  21. Friis Transmission Formula on Is a Laser Data Link 1.5 Million Kilometers Feasible? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Inverse square law applies for isotropic (all directions) as well as directional sources (focused beam). The way the difference is handled is by introducing an antenna gain term, where the gain at a given point in space is defined to be the ratio of the power density due to the directional source to the power density of an isotropic source. In communications applications, you use Friis' Transmission Formula to compute received signal-to-noise ratio which includes a factor Pt*Gt/(4*pi*R^2), which is the power density at a receiving antenna (lense) a distance R from the transmitter, where Pt is the Power Transmitted and Gt is the gain of the transmitting antenna (lense). For a laser it is easy to get a high Gt (very directive) with a small lense because the wavelength is so small, but that still does not get one around the R^2 relationship.
