Netflix is being evil. Patenting an on-line business model is retarded. It might make since to get the patents before someone else does to protect yourself, but to enforce them? That's just wrong. I hope they either 1) make things right or 2) lose all their customers. I just terminated my service. I was hoping they'd have a comment box asking why. Was going to link to this slashdot article.

Firefox IMHO is a much better user expierence with tabs (once you get use to the idea) and having a little search box.

I just wanted to comment on tabs and the little search box. I was helping a not-so-computer-literate friend out the other day. When I suggested he google something, he clicked on the icon to open up a new browser. I then suggested he close that new window and open a new tab. Which I had to teach him how. Then he started to goto google.com, and I stopped him suggesting he type it in the search box. Which he did, but instead of pressing enter to submit it, he pressed the go button just to the left of it. That go button only works for the URL, not for the search. So i had him put the cursor back in the search box and press enter.

A simple task turned into a crash course on web surfing. Is he the only idiot out there or are there thousands of other firefox users out there not using firefox's ease of browsing features simply because they don't know how?

You realize that all he did was somehow hard crash Acrobat Reader- a program completely unrelated to your work.

I know all about abstraction and re-using code. If you don't know what it's doing, they why are you using it? I had an operating systems class where we were to expand upon a basic OS, giving it a file system, page caching, multithreading, etc. The instructor graded you just like this judge did, he pointed at a section of code and asked you what it did. You grade was determined more on knowing what the code did than if it actually worked. (this was to detour cheaters of course). You may or may not have written that particular section, but you were still asked to know what it was. It wasn't that hard to read a comment or read the code as if it we english. I mean seriously. "That section creates a new thread process". "That line concatenates variable a and b." If you can't read your own code it means one of two things. 1) you write poor code or 2) you didn't write the code.

A programmer doesn't always have the glorious job of new development. They are often faced with maintaining legacy code. So a programmer needs to be able to read not only the code they write, but the code that others have written as well.
