  1. Cost? on Skype Makes U.S. Retail Debut · · Score: 1

How much are they selling this for? First of all, paying money for a boxed version of software I can get for free online seems rather silly. They are offering up a headset though, though I suspect it's probably not of the highest quality. What exactly are you paying for, and how much is it going to cost? While this might raise awareness about the service, I fail to see how it's anything more than a money grab by eBay.

This is not the first time PayPal screwed over Lowtax. You used to be able to register for the Awful Forums with PayPal (in case you don't know, the Awful Forums cost a one time $10 to join, unless you get banned and have to pay again), but they pulled out on him, claiming the forums were "inappropriate content" and left Lowtax owed a great deal of money.

I think that is how the story goes, goons or others, feel free to correct me.

I'm convinced the new "FIRST POST!!!!!1111" comment is "SLASHDOT DOESN'T RENDER RIGHT IN FIREFOX!!!!!!" Seriously I've been using Firefox for several months now, check Slashdot multiple times a day (because I'm a huge loser with too much time, let's just get that one out of the way), and I've had /. render incorrectly ONCE. Out of the hundreds of times I've loaded this page, that's a percentage I can deal with. I would choose a fast, secure browser with modern features that incorrectly renders a few pages a small amount of the time over that insecure, outdated, and all around piece of crap from Microsoft any day of the week.

    And who modded this informative?

  6. Re:The real reason it's not a threat on Microsoft Says Firefox Not a Threat to IE · · Score: 2, Insightful

We've actually discussed this a lot on the Mozilla college reps mailing list, and we pretty much decided that it was a bad idea, since what use is it to get people using Firefox when they don't know they're using anything different? If they think they're still using Internet Explorer, they're not going to go home and download Firefox or even know what it is. All doing that would really do is get people confused when they click on a familiar icon and an unfamiliar icon appears. The best way is to just show people the new features. I converted my brother easily by him seeing me use it. That's the only way we're going to get and keep users.

  7. My take on it on Star Wars DVD Box Set Released · · Score: 1

OK I know there's probably no chance of this actually being read, but I've gotta throw this out there anyway. I just rented the DVDs from my campus video store, and after watching only the first one (yes it's still the first one) I have to say I'm quite satisfied. When I watched the movie, it was the first time I was really excited by it in a while. I used to watch it with every line of dialog memorized and in the usual geek mode, but this time I just sat back and watched it as a movie, and I got just as excited as I was the first time I saw it. Does it matter to me that Greedo (now barely) shoots first? No. Do I really care if Jabba shows up and confronts Han? Not much. Am I going to be pissed off to see Hayden "I can only express one emotion" Christensen in the Return of the Jedi? Of course, but that's another matter altogether. Point is, while it would be awesome to have the original films, this is what we've got. And if I remember correctly, the joke in 1997 was that he had changed so little, that the only reason he was releasing them again was to money grub. Now we're complaining that he's changed too much? Give me a break guys. Before I picked this up I was convinced I would never own those filthy DVDs and was going to bit torrent the laserdiscs instead. But I gave my inner fanboy a rest. Anyone else who's that upset over these movies should do the same. If it's still too much for you to handle, then fine. But if you find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat during the Death Star fight, it's not really important when Greedo shot, is it?

  9. Re:Oh Great...Howard Stern in Digital Fidelity on High Definition Radio is Here · · Score: 1

That's one of the reasons HD Television is catching on slowly, the estimated costs for a television broadcaster to switch to HD is $8-10 million. The difference here, of course, is the fact that people want HDTV since for the most part one would not be watching HDTV on a freeway in a moving vehicle. Plus, are most people going to be interested in radio with better sound quality? Since the average person is satisfied with a 128kbps MP3, and not interested in newer, higher quality file formats, what makes anyone think that this will catch on? Same deal with SACD (aside from the fact that it's a proprietary format). If someone sees an SACD and a normal CD of the same album, they're going to buy the CD because it's cheaper (or hang the whole deal and download it).

I fully agree with you! I was only speaking in reference to the quality of Magic, which I've never played so I can't attest to how true it is. I am an avid player of D&D however and I can say that it is a very fun experience for everyone involved with our games. What I was saying is that all my Magic-playing friends have told me that Hasbro dumbed the game down almost to a 'Pokemon'-like state. I just thought I'd throw it out for discussion, but as I said I can neither confirm nor deny those allegations.

    Their point is this:
The first keyboard design got a patent, right? (I believe it would fall under #3,932,842, but I'm not completely sure.) But an HP keyboard is no different that a Microsoft keyboard, or any other kind of keyboard. It's all generally the same (which is what the bottom of that patent report says, I think.) What they're saying, however, is that their product is so much different than normal 'flat' keyboards, that it got its own patent.

Feel free to correct me if you find a different patent for the first keyboard, there were 61,000+ search results, I'm bound to have missed something. And I do realize that different 'ergonomic' keyboards have gotten their own patents.

Slashdot is to the New York times as Readers Digest is to magazines. (Sort of, you get what I mean) On a side note, I'm going to concur with just about everyone else in saying that calling Slashdot a Blog is definately a misuse of the term. It's not someone's journal. We downloaded some games on the computers at school. (sans teacher permission of course..) Eventually the hard drives started getting full and we had trouble logging on. The tech guys (who absolutely hate us now and talked about how they wanted to "break our [expletive deleted]ing necks" Right in front of us too...) took about 3 days to go to all the computers and clear them out. So basically if we were to ask for a game night they'd probably castrate us on the spot. Good thing school's almost out and I can play Jedi Outcast at home whenever I want..
