Obviously you're aware that he conceptualized the first massively popular online RPG, Ultima Online. It was that game which made MMO's penetrate the mainstream gamers conscience. While there were plenty before him (Merdian 59 for example), preceding Everquest, Ultima Online was the first of its kind.

  4. Re:Think about that. on Is Virtual Rape a Crime? · · Score: 1

I played an online MMO that had something similar to this. There were a few laws that were written when the game began and it was up to player elected judges to enforce these laws. For example, one of them was no swearing. You could usually swear and get away with it, but if a judge saw it, he'd transport you to court, and usually jail shortly after. Jail in this world consisted of a 6x6 tiled room with a bed and a talking stone. You had click on the stone a variant amount of times (depending on the sentence) and retype the message it says to get out of jail. The messages were along the lines of, "I am a bad person for committing a crime and will not do it again."

If you spelled a word wrong it would start the counter over. :)

It was pretty damn effective, since it was a pay to play game, it really sucked if you got your character stuck in jail.

Not only would you have to spend an hour talking to a stone, it also left a "red branding" on your characters viewable profile. This had a pretty big impact on your characters reputation.

For those who are curious, the game is NexusTK by Kru

Using a valid download center key you can download the file on a machine with an invalid VLK, but you still can't install it. This is the case at least with IE7, so I assume it's the same with other software as well. The installer does its own validation check. So ultimately, what do we gain except now we have the installer, which doesn't do an invalid user any good, because it checks for the key. And it doesn't do a valid user any good, because they could've gotten it anyway, without this!

So what the hell is the point of this?

In the context of a criminal investigation I'd say take those situations as a case-by-case basis. If they want the case solved badly enough they will find a way to contract someone to develop hardware (or emulation?) that will read said data, or they will find a way to have tax-payers fund it. Either way, if a medium exists that has been "forgotten" it's most likely that not everyone has forgotten how to access it, or that research cannot be done in order to access it.
