Evolution ? Why dont you want Opera for Web Browser too so you can be taunted to buy both programs (both are easier to use tha their counterparts afterall)? I would prefer Sylpheed for Email. And although I dont use News I believe Balsa is a news client and it looks cool? *can you tell I prefer GTK over QT?*:P
RedHat of course should have a choice to go with KDE or Gnome plus customize them to their liking and shouldnt feel intimidated to choose either but I would like to intimidate them to do more than just theming excellent desktop environments.
Ive never used KDE but newbies seem to prefer it and seem to learn to be productive easilly with a full KDE environment so when I installed Debian for my newbie sister *yesterday* I choose KDE even though I have never used the crap in my life.
Gnome2 is a very attractive environment and KDE3 is also so I think RedHat are doing unnecessary things to make their own desktop standard. I would prefer them both to be different. RedHat could make a whole lot more people happier by fixing the Copy/Paste drama between QT and GTK programs - it truely is a PITA to use both KDE and GNOME programs in WindowMaker and find out they hate each other - wasnt this a Gnome/KDE focus only last year?.:)
I can remember a few of these events but I couldnt see anything about Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy BBS Game which was fun to play plus chat in and the timeline doesnt mention Virtual Places(TM) either which seems like an important event to me.
Monster, Maze, ADVENT, Battletech, Labyrinth (online?) Genocide, FurryMUCK and of course Zork were nice to see in the list - I played all of these *with the exception of Labyrinth Online*. =)
I disagree with the hit-man part but patens are retarding software development. They were a good idea but in practise they are not a benefit to software evolution.
On day one you had to look at one patent, now theres so fscking many that you cannot even check for possible violations. Every day someone patents the obvious - whats obvious to one is obvious to many.
I think the real dillema the media industry faces is ; more people play games these days than listen to music and watch television.
Would you rather buy a music cd or a audio/visual dvd that gives you less entertainment than a game cd?
I think Rob Hubbarb said something about how the gaming industry makes a lot more money than old fashioned media entertainment.
Its out with the old and in with the new. Blizzard 'own' Roadshow in my eyes! I cant wait for the next The Sims release which was mentioned yesterday on Slashdot.:P
*sigh* It feels so good to grow up loving computing - its a fast-growing industry and I witnessed and was part of its birth. *hugs the monitor and kicks the tv*
Free License to write an Operating System on top of Palladium with full specifications is all thats needed for the 'platform' to be 'open'. Free License meaning non-descriminatory, no reliance on a particular vendor whatsoever and no licensing fee.
Public domain wares allow the greatest innovation and competition.
Oh blah, I viewed postscript and used gs-gnu and ghostview for the first time today *besides using it as part of printing* and you know what 'apt-get' is.:P
LSB isnt helping much when there are files all over the place, programs being renamed each revision and tools being hacked up to only work with GUI.
LSB is a start and it is crazy that GNU/Debian will not be included in this list when it has been following its own policies and standards for a long time. LSB is for RPM Distros. RPM means RedHat Packaging Manager.
GNU/Debian/Linux is the best choice in Distributions for people who like contributing to a Portable Operating System *gee look at those words and think what anagram is made up from the words - thats right POSIX*. =)
Write up howtos and post to lists saying theres a newbie friendly IRC channel (no other channel listed) then a year later beg for money every few hours? That is ridiculous!
Meanwhile there are plenty more servers and channels around to ask questions in. You almost get flooded out by entering #Debian at irc.debian.org - surely they could just round-robin the dns between a few servers (maybe irc..debian.org) and forget about OPN as being worthy.
Volunteer OS, volunteer Services - sounds like a good deal to me. If people have money and use the services they will probably want to donate anyway but begging for donations isnt very nice. There is nothing wrong with Debian.org putting a donate link on their site and there is nothing wrong with a notice *only* on-join in servers IMO.
Checkout BeyondLogic if you are interested in interfacing custom hardware as they have alot of good documentation on Serial/Parallel/USB Devices/Programming/etc. Slashdotting this site may be cruel so only go if you really are interested in interfacing at home. =)

Doh! I must have been asleep like the original poster. :P
I've already converted all my CDs to MP3 format.
:)
Its so nice to never have to swap a CD isnt it.
The Computer Gaming Industry is making record sales.

CVS does everything locally, are you sure CVS isnt what you want to use? =)

I dont think so Tim.

GNU/Debian has no built in PostScript reader either apparently. *apt-gets gsview* :\

This day should be called Gather and Hunt day from now on. Two posts about locking people into one market have been posted today.
Does anyone else want to own up to herding customers into a market?
A new policy?

I always end up posting to my own posts...

But I can't figure out what your current question is. If your question is
Why are you answering then ?
A better question to ask is what is the device and how much is the budget ? (An alternative cheap solution is probably possible - ie. x10)
The First Post should have been the Last Post. =)
Microsoft Marketing Department?
Wait till November 7th and you can own your own MS Tablet PC.
They may use the Watcom Tablet PC or one of the many other clones. (guess)
