I, like most people, do not have time to thoroughly research the issues in order to cast an intelligent vote. I mean, this is the reason we have a representative democracy...we "outsource" the analysis to the experts, which in this case is our representatives. Now whether that really happens is subject to much debate, which I'm sure will throughly hammered here on/.
Regardless, I found Project VoteSmart to be a reasonable way to quickly get up to speed on the candidates, the issues, and the intersection (voting record) between the two.
This opens the door to the exciting world of nanotechnology. The number of applications could be limitless, one of which could be the development of tiny flying robots, millions working together to solve complex problems. Of course the military could see immediate benefits, creating swarms of synthetic "cameras", allowing our intelligence agencies access to unprecedented targets of interest. And the risks should be minimal, as these are purely man-made beings with no innate ability to reproduce, mutate, or turn on their creators. I for one cannot wait...sign me up!
As an IT-guy, I've been a slave to the endless software upgrade cycle for over 10 years now. I've noticed that this way of thinking has leaked over to my pesonal life...I date-check everything and somehow consider *anything* older than a year or two crap.
For example, I was on Amazon last week shopping for Henry David Thoreau's Walden, which took forever b/c I *had* to find a copy that had a pub date of last year or newer. Like buying a 10 year old copy somehow diminishes the content or message...jeez.
In the next chapter (the 5th) the rollercoaster slows down a bit. That is, if you already know the behavior associated with the four possible isolation modes in transactions, what are the different types of locking, what (the hell) MVCC means and the importance of transaction scopes.
...but doesn't this describe a RDBMS? Why would I try to duplicate that functionality on the middle tier?
Kill deployment descriptors and we'll all be winners.
Better yet, fully utilize that database your company paid so much money for and implement your transactional code in stored procedures. Deploying patches are as easy as recompiling a procedure, and you'll support almost any client written in almost any language.
That said, this would free your developers from having to be intimately knowledgable about your database schema
Why are people so quick to shield developers from knowing the database? The data *is* your application, presentation/application tier technologies come and go. Developers all too often treat databases as bit buckets, and 9 times of out 10 those their applications are not scabable, perform like dogshit, don't support a wide variety of presentation technologies, and have to be refactored every few years to accomidate the J2EE tech de-jour. No thank you.

I, too, thought about buying the 'zapper. I opted for BellSouth's privacy director instead. It forces all "Unknown" callers to identify themselves, *before* my phone rings. I then get a recorded message of the caller, where I have the option to simply blow them off. My telemarketing calls have screeched to a halt. To bad it costs me $6 a month. Oh well.

A method and apparatus for creating a computerized market for used and collectible goods by use of a plurality of low cost posting terminals and a market maker computer in a legal framework that establishes a bailee relationship and consignment contract with a purchaser of a good at the market maker computer that allows the purchaser to change the price of the good once the purchaser has purchased the good thereby to allow the purchaser to speculate on the price of collectibles in an electronic market for used goods while assuring the safe and trusted physical possession of a good with a vetted bailee.
Yeah, it sucks that they are making you pay extra, but how does that compare to paying your high priced IT staff to develop a custom solution?
