    This to me is a really scary idea. I'm a grad student in English at Indiana University who will begin teaching freshman composition in the fall semester. One of the dangers of humanities computing that I've heard spoken of countless times by composition instructors is that their students believe grammar check results without questioning them; their grammar skills are such that they have problems understanding why the grammar check was wrong when examples are shown to them. This inability to see the difference is due both to poor preparation before college (I'm not just blaming the education system here, but the students as well) and too much trust in computers to do the job for them. The kind of grading program used by Indiana high schools is not only a bad idea for its inherent inability to do its job, but for the message it sends to the students: If code can write (which grammar checking is a first attempt at) and code can grade, then what is the student's role in their own learning process? If this program is producing nearly-identical results then that is indicative of a algorithmic grading on the part of the human graders, which indicates that this mentality has a broader reach than just those in the student subject position. (Or it indicates that the brain is a computer, which many humanitities professionals would debate - I don't have a position on this.)

    The word "verb" is a noun, so by using the gerund "verbing" you're actually "verbing" a noun ("verb") in order to use it as gerund (which is a verb used as a noun). Interesting.

    When we stop educating these indians n asians in our own universities, the cheap wages will stop. Im sick to death that in my course (info systems) its constituted by about 80% indians were as the govt continually quotes that there are more local students in every course.

    By "they" I assume you mean Apple. Even though Apple doesn't make a mouse with multiple buttons, almost any USB mouse will work in OS X...I'm typing this on my iBook which has an external Logitech mouse plugged in (2 buttons + scroll wheel/button). And yes, the extra buttons do useful things (I have them controling Expose and working like right-clicking in Windows).

    Quite a few people have commented that Wal-Mart's music service is less restrictive in terms of use rights than other download services. However, I have refused to by music at Wal-Mart for several years and will not be using their download service because of their policy of only offering edited versions of most CDs. Just search for Outkast or any other rap artist and you'll see that this apparently hasn't changed. Also, on a funny note, there is page after page of "Blank Track" listed for Nine Inch Nails' Broken. One or two of them is actually for sale for $.88!

    As an English major who's very technically inclined (I've had several Comp Sci courses), I'd have to say that your take on the English discipline is a load of crap. There are wrong answers when dealing with literary analysis; they're the answers that are unevidenced by the text. An English student can and will get questions wrong on tests due to not engaging the texts in an intelligent manner using proper citation (besides the fact that there are identification questions that appear on many tests. If you say that Joyce wrote "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" when, in fact, Yeats did, you will get that question wrong. Analytical questions are not the only question that appear). Differences in opinion or interpretive strategy come from a degree of uncertainty inherent in any written work; you cannot say that Ulysses is about green men from Mars and expect to pass such a class, much less get an A. Insights about the work must be coherent and have evidence for them. Please take an upper-division literature course or a course in literary analysis at a reputable institution before deploying an opinion to a forum such as this that slanders a discipline... it seems that your opinion is based on high school English, or perhaps freshman composition, where leniency is the order of the day.

    It should be noted that this can be also said of human language (or any other code). The characters and sounds that make up language are not important - it's the utility of those representations that is important. Just as an unskilled gamer attributes meaning to 'valueless' strings of characters by buyinh a username and password because they bring him or her what he or she wants, we attribute meaning to a system of representation (language) that allows us to communicate.
