Because MicroSoft is depending on the consumer to buy certain amount of software titles before it becomes profitable for them. If someone buys an XBox and mods it, and installs Linux and thats all they do, they are not paying in to buying actual licensed software for the XBox which MicroSoft wants a cut of.(Which is where they will eventualy make a profit on the HARDWARE you bought.) This is one of the main reasons the DreamCast died...
First off, Nintendo got involved because of the GameBoy Advance flash carts they were selling.
Second...
To release software for any of these systems, you must be a licensed developer. Which costs money. Lots of money. This doesn't become much of a problem except everything you release must ALSO be offcially licensed through the parent company, which is where in lies the rub. When people mod their XBoxs (or any platform) this allows them to play and use virtually any UNLICENSED software people come up with: MAME, Pirated Games, Home-made games, Linux ports, you name it. Meaning - MicroSoft will NOT recieve a fat check for each of those titles you install, which they DEPEND on to make their system profitable (Currently, MicroSoft needs EACH XBox owner to buy 10 full price XBox games before they break even because they are selling the hardware at a $150 loss per machine (Source: TechTV Interview with director of marketing @ MicroSoft on XBox losses.). If everyone is just buying an XBox to run Linux and play MAME emulation, then this literally destroys the platform, and will eventually run it into the ground. Nintendo has learned a lot over the past years, and this time around they made sure they were making a profit on their GameCube and GameBoy Advance hardware so that any pirating or mod chipping will not damage their profit margin as much. Unfortunately, MicroSoft will learn the hard way, and even though they have 10 odd billion in reserves, they seriously do not want to spend it because everyone thought it would be "cool" to mod their XBox to play MAME or run Linux. This is why SONY, NINTENDO *an* MICROSOFT are all facing this together, it hurts them all. If you want to see the console industry to stick around, DONT mod your console and BUY lots an lots of games.
I'll just buy one of those new radios with hard drives built into them that are popping up everywhere. It's the new trend, and that will piss off the RIAA even more. Bleh.
The senior sales rep for the XBox stated they are losing $150 per XBox sold. They mentioned for every unit sold, they need each owner to buy at least 10 (TEN) games before the XBox becomes profitable. This was on TechTV about a week ago. Nintendo said they can effectively sell their GameCube for $99 and still make a small profit.
Does anyone know of any console owners who have bought at least 10 games for any console other than the original NES and possibly the PSX?
Nintendo AT LAUNCH said if it ever came to price wars, they could effectively sell the GameCube at $99 and STILL turn a small profit. This will be their ace in the hole down the road. read on..
MicroSoft's lead sales rep was recently on TechTV in an interview. On the record, currently XBox is losing over $150 per XBox sold, and he claimed they need for every XBox sold, the buyer must purchase *10* (TEN) games for it to become profitable for MicroSoft. 10 is an entirely OBSCENE amount of games for ANY console. The only one I can think of that had the MAJORITY of owners having bought more than 10 games is the ORIGINAL Nes. There is no real way MicroSoft will ever make the Xbox profitable unless they somehow buy out both Sega AND Nintendo (They tried already, Nintendo refused.) and released all the 5 Star games on their system.
The problem with these mod chips is that unauthorized and licensed software can be made without any profit going to MicroSoft, Nintendo, and Sony. They DEPEND on those sales. Releasing free software like the Linux distro will hurt the XBox as it needs to be SOLD and LICENSED to be legally viable on the XBox. I think everyone remebers the big Tetris fiasco on the original NES when it was released without Licensing from Nintendo first.. They owed the big N a ton of money and sales were halted. Nintendo needed that money to make profit margins. This is no different.
Are the blind going to sue companies that have decided not to put up web sites? This is silly, do they want companies to just take their sites down? The blind should be happy that there are some companies that DO allow them to read.. Hell, there are many companies that I know of that aren't on the web, im sure not going to sue them for it.. Sounds like a great way to keep companies offline if you ask me...
Woohoo, not much longer till Microsoft pulls out of the console industry that they're destroying hand over fist. TechTV interviewed the marketing director the other day, they are losing $150 per XBox sold, AND they need people to buy over *10* XBox games before a single system becomes profitable for MicroSoft. Can you say DOOMED? Haha..
People swearing is the truth. TechTV has said..

That live chatting is mostly a bunch of teens swearing back and forth. Extended Play (TechTV show) talked about this a little bit saying that while the technology is neat, it just isn't workable because all everyone does is swear, and when you have more than two people talking it becomes unintelligible. On top of that, any parent that catches on to what their kids are hearing though this will mostly likely be a quick subscription cancellation.
First off, Microsofts gaming network is closed off. Meaning you wont be able to play with your PS/2 buddies in the same game, like GameCube and PS/2 owners are able to. Microsoft has made it a point that they don't want any of their online games to be cross compatable with the same games on other platforms. They pretty much lock you out from your friends and a larger player base. EA has dropped support for this simple fact. The "Our way, or the highway" attitude MicroSoft has had since inception carries on through their lousy online service.
Second, you have to pay a fee! I'm sorry, but I think Nintendo went the right direction with their model. Basically they dont want to put a lot of effort into it because most of the online gaming is done on PCs, but they knew console kids would still want it available. So they let the game publishers decide if they want to charge or not. For the most part, all the games will be free much like Blizzards Battlenet games. No service to pay for! Hooray!
Third, I have NO idea why XBox gets posted so dang much on Slashdot. It must be because the underdogs always are loved here or something. You would think they'd be more inclined to post PS/2 stories (Ie. the PS/2 Online stuff) over anything MICROSOFT.. Especially since there are Linux PS/2 Dev kits available that can do everything the MODDED XBox can out of the box.
Unfortnuately, none of them realise that they can buy a normal PC, with twice the power for a cheaper cost than an XBox and plug it into their TV to use Linux and play MAME.
None of the games will talk to the games on the PS/2 or GameCube.. So you get to play with basically no one.. EA pulled out of making online games for XBox because of this. Looks like PS/2 and GameCube owners will be happy playing with each other online.
MicroSoft is trying too hard to dominate everything, and not realising they're just killing themselves off AND the console industry. They can buy all those companies, but where will they be when MicroSoft gives up? They'll be all gone.. No more Rare.. No more Bungie.. Not like they made anything decent anyways. Well, the original coders did, but they all jumped ship when MicroSoft bought em.
Oh.. they're not on the XBox? Well that sucks.. Why would I want to buy one when they don't even have a single Final Fantasy game? Silly MicroSoft, Consoles are for kids!
It was supposed to be a MMOFPS that is a lot like what PLANETSIDE is looking to be. MicroSoft bought them out, made them cancel the original concept, cancel the PC developement, and make a crappy CONSOLE FPS.. yay..
This sounds totally illegal.. In a federal sense, even if you clicked okay on an EULA.. where are the slashdot lawyers who read this...? It's the equivelent of another cpu vendor telling Microsoft they sold x amount of licenses when it was really some other vendor. I would think that would be jailtime.
Screw the hardware sales, their software sales to people trying to get rid of MS will make their sales of OSX worthwhile.

You honestly think that since Lucas gave a license for some shitty star wars game that someone made 10 years ago, that they can go right ahead and keep making more shitty star wars games? Sorry, they cannot. What they created was Lucas's mindshare, and anyone who wants to use it for profit needs to have it okayed and a deal struck.
