Otherwise it is useless to me.. This is the main thing I like about Tivo .. I set my shows up and the Tivo knows when they are on, and if they get moved to a different day for a week like most programs do for one reason or another, it knows about it and adjusts accordingly. Manual isn't good enough for todays generation. I like it all automated. That's kinda the whole point behind Tivo...

  6. Tivo can do that WITHOUT a monthly fee... on Tivo and SonicBlue Settle Dispute · · Score: 2

Yes, it can record by channel and time and do the live broadcast pausing, etc all without a subscription. What you'll be missing is updating TV Guide data, and easier subscriptions, as well as suggestions and freebies from Tivo itself. If all you want is a digital VCR with no frills and no subscriptions, go grab a Tivo .. It'll do that on its own without a subscription.

Even John can't possibly turn down the free promotion Doom is getting from all of this. I mean, christ, it was an Alpha that barely worked, and people were going nutso over it! How many games can do that? And get on CNN, Slashdot, and every major news outlet? None. In the end, someone releasing a "patch" for an Alpha of this game is just HILARIOUS. I suppose what might tick John off more than anything is the fact other devs can get a peek at his brilliance ahead of schedule and figure out what he's doing that they're missing in their own games. Outside of that, I will bet anyone they'll be forking over their hard earned cash for Doom3 and a new vid card sometime early 2003 regardless if they've downloaded this, made a patch, or anything else that happens between now and then.

All the good shows are generally on at bizarre hours when people dont have the time to watch them, or are at work, or just are too busy in general. Tivo has made TV worthwhile again, with it, you weed out those shows you "dispise" .. You'll NEVER see them again! EVER ! How cool is that? To me it sounds like TIVO is your holy grail. I had basic cable because when I watched TV nothing was on. It was all crap. A friend got a Tivo and I liked how it grabbed Sienfeld at the odd hours .. I got my own, and now I have full DIGITAL cable, with 6 HBOs, and my Tivo is OVERFLOWING with documentries, great comedy skits, and some really fantastic movies on Independent Film Channel! TV *rocks*, but only with a TIVO.

You can come up with more whacked theories, but in the end, when you have literally thousands and thousands of these laser cannons, we can all sleep at night and not have to worry about nukes.

If you look at some of these sales, the GameBoy Advance is selling literally hundreds of thousands of copies of their games *easily*. Everyone is all on the lame 3D bandwagon. If people would just focus on making GOOD games, then it would probably be better. I mean really, look at Castlevania .. They made it 3D and it sold terribly. The 2D versions on the PSX and the GameBoys are selling like CRAZY. THERE IS A HUGE MARKET FOR GOOD 2D GAMES FOLKS - QUIT DEVELOPEMENT ON YOUR LAME 3D SHOOTER AND MAKE A ***FUN*** 2D PLATFORM GAME. ! Sometimes you gotta go back to your roots to really appeciate GOOD games. I've been digging up all my 2D games lately and franky, they STILL blow away 90% of the lame 3D console games I own.. Blegh. And that's the truth. It's about having fun gameplay. Nearly every gaming mag is jaded to 3D games now. Luckily, Sega is releasing their 2D Sonic Collection on the GameCube and it's getting good scores. I hope this will revitalize making good 2D games again. The last good all-new 2D game was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night which sold quite a bit. It took what make Metroid so great and made it on the PSX .. It was not 3D, it was a 2D side-scroller and everyone loved it. And it sold a ton! Reviewers liked it, but some ragged on that it wasn't 3D. These people need to die. Horribly. We need to go back to what was so great and urge companies like Nintendo, Sega, and Konami to start releasing NEW 2D games like SNES Zelda, or SNES Metroid, or Sonic, SNES Mario, and Castlevania. THESE are the games a lot of us crave, and we're stuck with the CRAPPY LIGHTING handheld GameBoy Advance to play them.. It's selling so much that this is reason enough that there is an audience for a GOOD 2D platform - NEXT TIME INCLUDE VIDEO OUT or at the LEAST make a cart-add-on for the GameCube so we can play these on our TVs. No one is buying the GameBoy because it's portable, they're buying it because of the awesome 2D games!

  17. Tivo has been this way even without digital cable. on Panasonic Combined DVD-R & PVR Device · · Score: 1
You run your coax straight through the Tivo. Sure, you can run RCA jacks and split the coax to the TV and TIVO, but you can do the same thing with Digital Cable - Get a second digital tuner box. It's not the TIVO that is the issue, it's the Digital Cable that is the problem. What you're waiting for is a Tivo with two tuners, the dish version of the Tivo has this, and allows you to record two/watch programs at the same time. Why they havent released a consumer upgrade for the standard TIVO is unknown.

One problem will exist still though, to record and watch the same things, only ONE can be set to DIGITAL while the other CANNOT record through digital because the DIGITAL BOX can only DECODE one stream per box.

  18. This is NOTHING like a TIVO. Missing features! on Panasonic Combined DVD-R & PVR Device · · Score: 4, Informative

It doesn't have daily updates of program guide data to select shows to record, subscriptions, actor/director lists, no on guide info while watching. No thumbs up or down.. Basically everything that makes TIVO awesome is NOT on this. They're getting there, but I suspect the only people releasing something of what we want is TIVO themselves.

  19. If each copy isn't licensed fron Nintendo. YES. on Lik-Sang Back Online · · Score: 1

Nintendo relies on ALL software for it's systems to be license through them for a price. This is how the console and handheld market works. Everything that comes out needs to have money exchange hands. Any game you write yourself needs to be licensed through Nintendo/SOny/Whoever. If they allowed people to just simply write their own software for a hobby, the software library would grow so huge no one would bother buying any games in the stores, and Nintendo would go out of business. Do us all a favor and respect the systems you love.

  21. You're destroying the platform... on Lik-Sang Back Online · · Score: 1

It's great that you might want to program for the GBA - BUT - Nintendo does not want what happened to the Dreamcast to happen to their GBA (It died.). When you make unlicensed software (Ie. your own homebrew games - Without paying Nintendo $$ to license/release it) you are bypassing any profit that NINTENDO is supposed to be making off the game. Now, if they let everyone make their games for free, or run emulators etc.. Who would actually BUY the games in the stores? Well, a lot of people would, but a LOT of people would also just buy a GBA and play nothing but homebrew games and emulators and linux stuff that people developed for it, and this is where Nintendo loses money, they DEPEND of people who buy a GBA to BUY licensed and legit software because that is where they make their money. Right now MicroSoft is losing hundreds of millions because of people jhust buying the console and modding it to just use Linux and copy games. They need people to buy nearly a dozen games off the shelf to break even on the cost they spent to give you the XBOx that cheap - but the people who are fanatical are killing the consoles by modding and skipping the storebought software. It happened to the Dreamcast, it's happening to the XBox, and Nintendo doesnt want it to happen to their GBA. If you're REALLY serious about devloping on a GBA, or any other console, you NEED to get licensed to do it, or join a company who already is. Otherwise you're literally hurting the company that you like so much.

It *is* illegal to write software to run on these platforms. In order for it to run, you need the right key for the encrypted bios to allow the CD with your software to boot. To do this, you need to license it through the console owner. Bypassing this is illegal, and violates a few laws. Tengen did this with their TETRIS game in the mid 80s and Nintendo legally shut them down because they did not license their boot chip for the CART on the NES. Instead they made their own and broke quite a few laws. You can find more information about this on the web.
