    • No spell check suggester
    • Limited signatures - Only one per account and no way to insert during editing a message. A pain for us who use signatures as an Autotext/proforma facility.
    • Searching for emails - In OE and other mail clients when the list is sorted by Sender clicking M will take you to the first M entry.
    • Formatting HTML emails - You cannot select HTML text and then set to the same text size from the formatting toolbar, you must go through the menu (Format > Size > Medium)

Java would be great for this function. I always liked the ability to process and rollback data updates across multiple databases on the fly.

If reading from live databases on the fly on a per enquiry basis, a centralsied Java app could be very useful.

    • Write your interface for each database to be connected into a database running in memory and query.
    • For any exceptions raised you could set a flag in all the databases to flag their local users.
If processes trolling the databases looking for exceptions, I am unsure of the best way to implement.

I am not in the US but agree, stopping people cheating on their taxes would be beneficial for all.

As to taxes in general, my brother is an economist and was provy to a number of Government level reports on New Zealand tax system. Apparently, a flat tax rate of 19% (or so) for all salaries, even when the tax rates for salary bands are 24% (lowest), 33%, etc would produce more revenue for the government. Sounds paradoxical doesnt it. However, it is political suicide as most people believe higher income earners should pay more. The main points were:

    • Tax structure is simplified therefore reducing compliance costs.
    • Eliminates a lot of the black economy, under the table payments, as people dont move from one tax bracket to another stuffing up their rebates.
    • People will accept overtime and generally work more as they will not move from one tax bracket to another stuffing up their rebates. Apparently this is a large factor.

You point and click and you have the GIS Position, Photo and data capture metadata immediately available. For comaprison, try using the GPS, Digital Camera and GIS system on a laptop and work out the capture time per point after matching up all the data.

When I saw the ptototype they were working on users developing their own custom forms for the capture so after you capture the data, you fill in your own custom form.

  21. My Experiences on Sharing IT Problems with Executives? · · Score: 5, Insightful

In my experience Management believe that throwing money at hardware or software will fix their problems. Or better yet we will outsource. The basic things they seem to forget or have not learned are:

    • Buying new CRM software is a bad idea if your problems stem from your Customer Service staff failing to identify existing customers because they are too lazy leading to thousands of duplicate records
    • METADATA is a process not a single step solution. You can have greate Metadata software but if noone uses it or enters crap data why bother
    • You need a Thesaurus with your Metadata solution if you are serious
    • To provide a quality solution you first need to identify the problem including if that highlights how bad things are at present
    • VENDORS WILL LIE TO SELL THEIR WARES. Who here has had to implement a crap solution because the manager bought direct from the vendor without consideration (usually to integration, usability and TCO)
    • Data is a corporate asset that has value. I have just recommendeed to my manager at a former employer to get their data valued as a corporate asset. This is a last ditch desperate effort to stop a specific manager from buying ANOTHER lemon that will have detrimental effects on said Asset. The last lemon he provided did the following:
      • Provided a solution with less features
      • Provided no security. The vendor provided a word document with instructions in how to set up an ODBC source (to Informix on Unix - Tru64). The document listed the username (informix) and password that had full rights. Anyone with this could drop production tables, databases at a whim. I later discovered the individual usernames had the same rights as the application would not run with security turned on.
      • Database logging could not be turned on as it broke the application. We were not sure why this was the case but it did. Dont worry, it was only a financial system for the main source of revenue for a Local Government organisation.
      • Introduced IT to the vendor with the WORST service they had ever encountered (in 20+ years experience)
      • The worst UI we had EVER SEEN
      • Poor process controls. The tables still had the fields for Coupons (someone explained this was a leftover from when the application ran on a mainframe)
      • Little or no user documentation and NO SA documentation. I was told the Users Group provided more real support than the vendor
      • 56 patches in 60 days a number that broke the system when tested. Need I say any more

Most management decisions are made out of ignorance and head burying so the existing problems are not known in the hope all symptoms will remain hidden.

    • Deductive logic is extremely useful in all areas of life but some people are just illogical (or lazy). Teaching logical patterns is not given much priority in schools but it should be one of the first things taught.
    • Right and Wrong cannot always be shown. Sometimes the least wrong solution is the one to go with. Or at least teach to make non-clearcut decisions.
    • Homeschooling can be a better environment for learning that Mainstrean services
