  1. Risk in IT on The Perils of Simplifying Risk To a Single Number · · Score: 1

Stuff VaR, I find it hard enough to get any clients to create and maintain a Vision Document (RUP - or any other similar document from another framework) for their project. This ha always proved to be the biggest risk.

Then there are those stunning Risk Registers with the Likelihood and Impact factors assigned during the one and only "risk workshop", that is akin to decision by committee, that are never looked at again. Does anyone know who I apply to for those hours of my life spent in Risk Workshops back.

    My $0.02 is spent.

Having worked in a bank that was planning to move to SOX I always wondered how they would do without Excel. A lot of their system interfaces spat out a CSV (or similar data file), someone checked it in Excel and corrected it (Because either the in or out interface had some issues they could not spend the time to fix) and then upload it. This is especially the case when interfacing with Mainframe systems. Generally, the business process is like this
    1. Export the file to CSV
    2. Check it for errors and fix as required
    3. Add in the rows it always missed
    4. Save the file, sometimes using VBA written by the last person working there that has left the country

Try "Ironwood", a colloquial name for some hardwood timbers. While working as a structural engineer I designed and supervised the strengthening of an older building to resist the earthquake forces. To install the steel diagonal bracing in the roof we had to drill bolts through the Ironwood beams. The contractor had to use a diamond drill designed for concrete as nothing else worked. Interestingly, the beams were hand shaped as you could see the marks from the tool used. Obviously the old builders (circa 1890) found them harder to work with also.

IHE promotes the coordinated use of established standards such as DICOM and HL7 to address specific clinical needs in support of optimal patient care. IBM has released a Linux based technology enabling the visualization of infectious agents across the United States at any point in time, providing scientists and public health officials with a powerful tool for understanding, and potentially preventing, the spread of infectious diseases.

Being able to model the data using different visualization/modelling techniques has the potential to allow officials to identify areas of interest. For more info look at ESRIs Website.

For example: Map the Maximum growth rate per head of population to identify geographic areas where the disease grew the fastest. Combine this with census/demographic information such as Population density, ethnicity, Std of living. Display as a heat map (eg Red Max, Green Min).

    • keep employee details
    • allow the Web-based booking, signing off and tracking of holiday requests
    • act as a repository for personnel-level correspondence and activities between staff and Area Managers

Think about using eGroupware. You already have it installed and know the application. Try to make it meet your requirements.

Can you add custom fields to eGroupware? If so you could store a lot of this information in there

eGroupware has a meeting request system. Could you use this as a leave request system. Employee enters in leave request, invites the approving manager, manager approves or rejects. From http://www.egroupware.org/?category_id=43

    * How can I allow my secretary to "manage" my calendar ? Manage means to eGW that the secretary has to be able to add appointments to your calendar and confirm them on your behalf. You have to grant the secretary read, edit and add access to your calendar. Go to your preferences and start Calendar / Grant access. Check read, edit and add for that user. Your secretary can then select your calendar in any view and add appointsments to it.* ...

Have a look at http://www.egroupware.org/acl as this would seem to allow you to meet the third requirement. You should be able to make this work.

If you could make eGroupware meet the HR requirements this would simplify things for you with less applications to run, less training required.
