OLD??? I am a total Linux Newbie and my first project was to install an e-smith server at home as a gateway server. It is still under active development by Mitel's as it is used for their Mitel Networks 6000 Managed Application Server .

    I use it to:

    • Act as a Domain COntroller for my home network (Windows PC's)
    • Host web application I am testing. Comes with PHP, MySQL, APACHE, other stuff
    • Web filtering (ala DansGuardian)
    • IMAP Mail available for each local user account
    • External Access to IMAP with IMP from HORDE that comes preinstalled
    • Web administration panel
      • Absolutely awesome product that I really recommend. It has worked for me better than I imagined.

As an structural engineer currently doing Data and Business Analysis I must respond. The current trend with buildings including materials and costings is going to bit people in a few years. Here in New Zealand we have the Leaky Building Syndrome where the introduction of new materials and methods (and in a lot of cases dodgy developers) has caused a major water integrity problem with new structures.

So what, engineers may want to build things a bit more rhobust and this will blow out the cost in the short term but in the long term . .

A similar argument can be made in regard to insulating houses. Yes, a well insulated house with Double Glazing will add cost to your house initially. However, over the life of the building the comfort and savings in energy can far outweigh the initial cost. TCO.

In regards to the initial question it sounds like the poster is doing the right thing. Trying to convey his conceptual ideas to the architect.

Peter Jackson usually makes a cameo appearance in his films. In "The Frighteners" with Michael J Fox he is in the scene where the dork husband has just died and is following Michael J Fox up the street (I am quite sure). Big Bearded Guy.

Every copy of the magazine had a bootable Linux distro (with some apps removed for space). There were some very positive comments from first time users.

Two months before the PC World distro I downloaded Knoppix and tried it out on my 2 PC's here at home. On my daughters PC it detected everything. On my PC it would not detect sound but hey, I had a great time discovering Linux for the first time. Still couldn't get my cable modem to work but I know I can one day. I wouldn't have tried Linux otherwise.

Now I have downloaded 2 other distro's of Linux. I have entered play mode due to my experience with Knoppix. Time to set up a server at home.

I have a new work opportunity at a clients office. I need to bring a my own PC workstation. It needs to be runnning a web server (Apache) and database (mysql) for an idea we want to develop. I am going to build a Linux box that runs on their windows network. The fact I am even trying this is due to playing with Knoppix. I may even use Knoppix for this as I know it can be run from a HD also.

In our case we came up with ways to improve the workflow and reduce lost files. You have to make it simpler for them (And there will be ways).

We created a logical directory structure on our server that could accommodate all of our job and administration related files and a naming convention. eg 2962re03.doc is the 3rd report for job 2962 located in the path i:\jobfiles\isp\2900\2962\2962re03.doc

Additionally, I wrote some macros for MS Word so users could click the custom SAVEor OPEN button, enter the 4 digit job number in the Pop-Up box and it automatically browsed to the correct directory. No more tree browsing - Then we had complete buyin.

As we dealt fully with Job Numbers it became faster to open and save using the custom buttons than using word Open/Save.

Took a few brainstorming sessions and some sensible thinking but this eliminated the need to buy a File Documentation software install.
