Since the Kennedy's (supposedly part of the more enviro conscious Dems) continue to fight this wind farm, why not offer to build a coal or nuke plant on Nantucket?
Where do they think the power for their 'compound' comes from anyway?
It's all pretty simple there. To install something you have to put in the admin password. Unix made easy.
The way Apple does it (by app) is FAR more intelligent than having to make a user an admin or log out of the system entirely to log in as an admin.
I have a few applications here at the school that demand admin privs. I've all but given up trying to restrict them. But as anyone who has seen the proliferation of unwanted toolbars can attest - the cost is high.
Want some Tritium? It's already started...

These are Trasers. The bright light comes from a radioactive source - in this case Tritium gas. This reacts with the inside of the glass, lined with phosphor. All this and a 10 year lifespan.
Pretty neat. Not that you are allowed to OWN one in the U.S. yet, but the military's had them for quite a while.
What's wrong with using a tag like this? Put a big {CENSORED} on the stuff that China doesn't want you to see and let the people decide how to deal with it.
I think that all this playing nice with the communist government there is going to get us all into serious trouble.
About stuff already placed in the PD? Like in Germany, there are all sorts of Elvis compilations coming out. 50 years folks and you could do what you like with it.
So what would they do? Roll back this stuff or simply extend it ala Disney - the other branch of government.
Uhmm.. CoolWebSearch has so many variants now that NO spyware remover can do them all. I have one user who will need a total rebuild to get rid of it as NOTHING seems to clean it permanently (comes back within 24 hours).
It's only going to get worse. Never thought I'd start recommending Apple but under the current circumstances...
There should be an agency that attempts to confirm WHOIS records. If the information given is false, or the individuals cannot be contacted - the domain DIES.
And don't forget about the clients themselves. Patched to the gills, I thought we were ready for the world (no, not the band). Sure enough, today I counted 4 out of 12 computers already ahve some screwed up toolbar installed.
I can't blame the girls now. These guys have a financial incentive now to 'push install' this crap whether we want it or not. How's THAT for TCO? Does MS figure this sort of bullshit in?
Funny, I don't see any of this happening on the Macs here or my Linux box in the office...
"AP: Why did you change your mind and decide to put the original three movies out on DVD now?
Lucas: Just because the market has shifted so dramatically. A lot of people are getting very worried about piracy. That has really eaten dramatically into the sales. "
Oh man, my bullshit-0-meter just went off the scale. Time to use 'Lucasian' calibration...
The first time I saw Star Wars at home was when a certain relative of mine showed his in-theatre shot Beta version of it - that was in 1980. It's not like piracy is some new phenomenon - it's been around in various forms since media became available.
He's releasing it now because it's the perfect time to do so. With the THX-1138 remake and the 'Sith' movie around the corner, this is the ultimate 'hype' time. Well, at least until the HD versions appear...
Funny, I've never had the problems you've described short of bad configs or bad boards. Shall we cite chapter and verse of Intel's mistakes lately? WE don't even have to talk about direct mistakes. The 810/815 series isn't exactly what I would call 'stable'. All things being equal there are ALWAYS cheaper alternatives that aren't quite as stable from Intel, VIA, SiS, and Nvidia. That's why you plan to get the better ones when stability is a must.
Last week I purchased a NEO2 board (NFORCE 3) and a 3800+ Athlon 64. It TOTALLY rules. Know what else? I do video and 3D rendering - a LOT of it. I have it OC'd about 5% so far too. No lockups. No 'crackles' from the Audigy. Everything is cool and I can't believe how frigging CHEAP it was!
I wouldn't say that Intel has everything wrapped up. comparing a Xeon to a 3800+ is hardly fair as you are comparing a server processor to a desktop one. Now if you compared it to say, an Opteron (a much more fair comparison), well then you'd see AMD still wins or pulls up even.
What's more, the more processors, the better. Hypertransport gives each processor it's own bus.
That said, comparing an FX-53 to a 3.8 GHz Intel would also be a more fair comparison. And while it's true that the Intel wins it's share of benchmarks, keep in mind: You are comparing a 3.8 GHz Intel chip to a lousy 2.6 GHz processor (the FX-53). Theoretically, the Intel should totally kick it's ass - but it doesn't. That's some good chip design there my friend!
I just got a 3800+ last week. All I can say is: WOW!
...is important stuff. I could give you countless examples of how good PR overcame better technology. I guess the thing we techies have a problem with is that we can't understand how a superior technology or better way of doing things doesn't become the standard.
Alas, the world doesn't work that way and doesn't look like it will change anytime soon. Most people are not technical in nature and rely on a balance of information - mostly given to them by the mass media. Don't blame them - they simply don't know. After all, how much do you know about scrapbooking or landscaping? Most people have a focus in life on only a few things - not a flaw, just a fact. Ciphering the details on new tech or formats just isn't something most people will engage in.
I think in the case of electronics formats, quality has ALWAYS taken a back seat to cost, marketability, and the 'it's good enough' factor. Case in point: Beta Vs. VHS. VHS's costs were lower, had more manufacturers to market, and was good enough for home recording/playback. Was it better than Beta? Not in the least. And that's why MP3's are winning also. Low cost, great portability, and it's simply good enough.
You do get a '+1 Insightful' for your use of 'thick haired golf players'. Amazing how a short stereotypical statement like that illustrates things.
(Have to say 'DIGITAL' in all caps so it sounds more impressive)
People are far more forgiving of bad bit quality than skips or pops. But no one should be surprised. After all, FM radio's quality ain't all that and TONS of people still listen to it everyday.
I guess for most people 'Business Audio' will do.
P.S. Business Audio is real. Compaq used to use this phrase on some of their desktops. They had the sound card AND speaker inside the case. No lie.
But, what's wrong with China changing it's laws to better support their own people? If you are seriously suggesting that we stop using Chinese products then you'd better look around. In electronics, there's hardly any other choice. Why do you single out Walmart for this? Open your eyes and look in ANY other retail store.
The US simply can't compete with cheap labor like this so... We use it if they want to supply it.
Perhaps it would be better for these people to slave and die in the fields instead of becoming industrialized, but I'm not sure. Every nation that has gone through this process started this way - out of necessity.
Don't weep too uncontrolably for China. At the rate they're going their economy will soon dwarf the US. Pray that their governmental system changes before them or perhaps YOU will be working for.50 cents an hour.
So what kind of legal liability will there be for these insurance companies if their lovely GPS tracking systems are hacked? You know it's going to happen - they don't I'm sure - but when it does, are THEY insured against the consequences?!
So help me God, I'll be the first in line for a lawsuit if that level of my privacy is breached.
Seriously, you could look at any one of my proxy logs from last year and you'd see that our Korean students are BY FAR the heaviest bandwidth users. The top 10-15 users every day are usually Korean, and they only represent less than 10% of our student body of 130!!!
They try and watch 100 Mbit soap opera feeds from KTV (with no success), and they get a bit upset about not being able to do that.
I guess it's all a matter of perspective. We just got a 3 Mbit DSL upgrade last year and I thought it was pretty spiffy. I know schools our size that are lucky to get a frac T1. About a month after the upgrade, a Korean student asked me, "Hey! Why is Internet so SLOOOWWW?!"
Let's just be honest. As I see it, Joel Hodgson and his pals were probably high on weed and/or acid and just getting back from a Rocky Horror viewing (where he performed as 'Riff-Raff'), when he had a revelation. Why not apply audience participation to an old, crappy movie?!
I'm not minimizing the effect of that revelation (I would NEVER have watched half of those, or even known of their existance otherwise), but like most great ideas, this concept started out in other similar forms. I'd be interesting to see what this guy does down in Texas. Is it a blatant copy, or something just different enough to be called, 'new'?
Blockbuster announced that this is the last year VHS tapes can be rented. Do you honestly believe that the movie companies will continue to support this format when you can get a player for $29.99 at Walmart?! And we won't even discuss the 'bargain' versions of DVDs they can put how, cheaper manufacturing costs, etc.
...is the fact that many of the companies behind these formats are media giants.
If for instance Sony decides to only release Spiderman 4 on Blu-Ray, whatcha gonna do? It would only take one mega-hit for people to starting shelling out the cash. Hell, I've bought GAME SYSTEMS because I liked one game.
Just imagine how they will put us all on the rack with two competing formats.
Since the Kennedy's (supposedly part of the more enviro conscious Dems) continue to fight this wind farm, why not offer to build a coal or nuke plant on Nantucket?

What hypocrites!
"Oh PLEASE guys, let me in - I'll be good!"
:)
"These are not standard j-10 diagnostic messages captain..."
"Got the lil' devil... Uh oh."
P.S. Mods, it IS on topic - if you've read the most bizarre Star Trek book on the 'planet'...

...BITTORRENT? Sorry, I didn't think the protocol needed one. Who's going to enforce this change? Is BT even covered? Also, does this cover USENET?
Interesting but ultimately stupid law.
STEAL their domains.
