What would be good is a standard backup protocol so you could point a compliant tool at x, y & z services that you subscribe to and it would grab a dump of your data.
Please forgive me my heinous crime of threadjacking, but I can't possibly reply to everyone so I'm just gonna aim for the top of the comments page.
Why, everybody does it.
So anyway, OLPC seems like a relatively rugged+cheap choice.
I let my daughters (2 & 6) play with my old tablet PC, they haven't broken it yet (although the 2yo did break the }] key on MY notebook:( programming without } and ] is a major PITA, I guess {[ would've been worse).
I've been reading Anathem and the following passage comes to mind:
It became clear from the nature of the questions Delrakhones asked that he was trying to work out which iconography the gang subscribed to. He did not seem to grasp something that was clear enough to me and Cord: namely, that there were extras who would beat up avout simply because it was more entertaining than not beating them up -- not because they subscribed to some ridiculous theory of what we were. He was assuming that rapscallions bothered to have theories.
Another Ballmerism from his visit down under that made me facepalm:
Steve Ballmer has publicly belittled Google's fledgling mobile phone platform, saying the world's largest search engine ad broker is low on Microsoft's list of mobile competitors.
At an investor briefing in Sydney today, Microsoft's chief exec said Google would not have an easy time convincing handset manufacturers to adopt Android, its brand new Linux-based mobile platform.
"They've got some smart guys and hire a lot of people - blah-di-blah-di-blah," Ballmer said of his rival. "They start out way behind in a certain sense, and we'll see how they do."
Then he added "I'm not giving them a hard time" - before continuing to give them a hard time.
The prefixes can be different you just need a supercomputer cluster to run the program. The appendages need to be added to both files however which is fine for JPEG -- you can add as much junk as you want at the end and it will be ignored -- but doesn't help with the challenge presented in that we can't modify the original file.

I'm hoping we can get Android fully running (including supporting all hardware devices) on it.
Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Should Be A Convenience Store not a Government Agency
Can't remember who said it.
Can recommend a good notebook for Linux?
Don't let them get a hold of any lasers, that could be a bad combination.
That was worth reading to the bottom of the discussion.
Reminds me of Snow Crash.
Visual Basic would be Satanism - Except that you don't REALLY need to sell your soul to be a Satanist...
Speaking as the dark lord of hell, I'm offended by the insinuation that I want to possess the souls of VB "programmers"!
I think they were referring to the Other Dark Lord.

It's funny because I don't think I actually know anyone who likes fruitcakes.
Someone must though otherwise there wouldn't be any.

I don't think it's reasonable to demand that intellectuals be pedagogues
Or andragogues even.

Ironically, the answer is at a site called Slashfood.
I just found it, it's like Slashdot for culinary geeks; worth a bookmark.
Or you could put a shot of grenadine in your beer.
Of all the ways to get a chemical into something; "I know, lets genetically modify this organism used in the process".
