My experience has been there are few pretenders to the throne that even come close to Tivo's quality of service.
My experience includes both DirecTV's Tivo Box and Dish Network's DVR. And, in the end, it is a tie. Both services are good. Both have nice features (including the ability to skip ahead 30 seconds and the ability to jump ahead in five or ten minute increments). Both record what I want, when I want. The Dish box has a bigger hard drive, but that is probably because it is a new box. And, the Dish box has the ability to add an extra few minutes of recording to a show, if I desire (for those of us that LOVE the ABC show Lost, you know that ABC has a bad habit of extending the show past 10pm ET -- I can't tell you how many times I missed the last two minutes of episodes because my Tivo stopped recording at 10pm).
So, in the end, to me the issue is not whether or not Cox is offering Tivo. The DVR v. Tivo battle is a draw. The issue is do I want to leave Satellite TV heaven and return to cable TV hell? Do I want to pay more for lower levels of customer service? And the answer is a resounding "No!".
Satellite TV is still head and shoulders above cable TV. And, it is cheaper.
Blockbuster will not send you a new release until it has been released for 90 days
That is simply not true. BB shipped Chronicles of Narnia to me three days after it was released on DVD. And, BB also shipped Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to me nine days after it was released. (BTW, "Charlie" was a better movie than I expected. )You just have to know how to search for the new relases on BB. New releases are not placed on the main BB page after you log in. When you know there is a new release out there that you want to see, you have to search for the exact movie by title. It will show up on your search window and you can add it to your queue.
And, slightly OT. The reason I went with BB over Netflix was that at the time I joined, BB was cheaper. Not sure if that is still true.
Wikipedia lost my respect when I read the 9/11 article several months back.
My question is why did it take you so long? While Wikipedia is a useful quick reference tool, and contains thousands of more articles that any other similar reference, the fact is that the very system that allows Wikipedia to creat thousands of articles leaves it open to abuse.
In the whole range of accepted sources of fact, Wikipedia is somewhere below politically-oriented Blogs, the New York Post and CBS news. And that is pretty low.
Wait a minute? Some people consider Wal-Mart to be a "great satan"? I thought SCO was the "great satan". Or was it the Oil Companies?
Now I'm really confused....Maybe I should look up Great Satan on Wikipedia. Oh, damn! I LIVE in the Great Satan! Is there some pill or something I can take for that?
The problem is that with success comes size. Companies like Microsoft get crushed under their own weight. If history is any lesson, Google will follow suit unless they truly are that smart.
I completely agree with you. Those big companies are in trouble. IBM after all showed only a 25% growth in profit for Q1 2006. And, just a few minutes before I posted this, Microsoft announced a small jump of 16% growth in profit AND a 13% growth in revenue. Leaving the tech industry, Exxon Mobile had a horrible quarter with only $89 Billion in Revenue.
Yeah, those large companies, they are just falling apart....Oh, wait...
Remember all of those European scientists came to the U.S. before/during WWII? How much of the American technical supremacy of the 20th century can be traced back to their contributions?
While I agree with the overall attitude of your post, I am just reminding everyone that one of the primary reasons Einstein and the rest of those European scientists came to the U.S. was because they were trying to escape Nazi Germany.
The 2007 release presents newly designed menus and toolbars as well as new features that businesses and individual computer users can use to complete tasks more quickly and easily.
What's new in Office Word 2007?
Office Word 2007 includes new tools that help you create more professional-looking documents in less time, build documents more easily from frequently used content, and produce professional-looking letters, proposals, datasheets, and other documents fast. Quick formatting capabilities help you rapidly apply a new look and feel to your documents, and the new Live Preview capabilities give you a quick look at any changes you make.
Obviously, it's time to pull out the check book and send more of your money to Redmond.
Why doesn't Slashdot just work out a deal with del.icio.us so that Slashdotters can mark the fact that they have a Slashdot account in their del.icio.us preferences, and then have those bookmarks be minable by the Slashdot editors.
Bah, you don't get it, do you? This is all about MINDSHARE! After Mindshare you get Innovation. And, after Innovation, you get Web Traffic. And, after Web Traffic, you get Dupes!
It may not make sense now, but one day, young grasshopper, you will understand. Now, where did I put my percosets?
It takes about 30 seconds to complete those steps. Alright, I am being sarcastic. But, that's why I am happier with the Echo Star DVR. I push one button and zap, my show jumps ahead ten seconds. Push another button and I jump back ten seconds.
Wait a minute! Did you just compare Windows Vista with Ferrari?

Oprah: the Video Game.

Well, Carl Bialik has submitted many articles. And, as I recall, has been doing so for at least one year.

Well, at least they didn't name it "Monday".
That is probably because you are spending your entire day surfing Slashdot instead of doing REAL WORK!!!
Oh wait....sorry, I just had a flashback to my last manager.
You owe me a new cup of coffee!
I am shocked, shocked I say, to see that there are incompetent employees at a retail store.
Yes. The opportunity for great pay, IS there. IF you have Security Clearance, Clarence.

This is your boss, I demand that you lower your rates or I'll hire less-expensive overseas developers.
And no, Freecell doesn't count.
Halo?
Well, according to the FAQ's that Microsoft provides on Office 2007:
What's new in the 2007 Microsoft Office system?
What's new in Office Word 2007?
Obviously, it's time to pull out the check book and send more of your money to Redmond.
You could interpret this in so many ways...
Well, for one thing, this has a British accent.
Come on Moderators! It's working! Now is the time to pour it on!!!
And the "rint" in Sprint is a play on the word "rant", which is what I do what I call Sprint customer service.
Hey, man, you might as well just suggest that we cross the streams

Actually, I've been using my OTHER time to, you know, work. It doesn't hurt that I'm too lazy to bookmark Digg.
