In the US, I don't believe there is any way to capture HD digital signals from satellite or cable (except for a locked-down set-top box) is there?
You can capture unencrypted QAM channels on your cable. All the network TV stations like ABC, NBC, FOX, PBS, etc are available in unencrypted QAM. In my area, even PPV content including pr0n is available! just buy this and use it with MythTV or MCE
I regularly download 720p movie trailers from apple's website and play it on my 46" HDTV via MCE2005 PC connected using the DVI-HDMI cable. All the trailers look stunning (just recently watched trailer of 300 spartans). So, I don't think that there is anything wrong with the HD-trailer encoding or bit-rate. Maybe the graphics card used in apple TV is not that good. I use a cheapo Geforce6200 with nvidia purevideo codecs and OTA HD broadcast and apple's HD movie trailers look great.
Intel's quad cores are, and they're actually two Core2 dies connected together I believe. "Native" quad core is in the works by AMD and Intel, but is currently not on the consumer market.
At the end of the day, nobody cares whether the cpu is "native" or not. If its cheap, gives good performance, sucks less electricity and fits in "one" socket, its good enough for most folks
From the article:
The anti-piracy servers use hostnames like 101tracker.dhcp.biz, aplustorrents.qhigh.com, bitnova.squirly.info, bittorment.ocry.com, and pirate-trakkrz.leet.la. All these hostnames can be traced back to the same IP Ranges, these ranges contain possibly hundreds of fake trackers, so feel free to block them
Blu-Ray is an always has been superior just based on the fact that it can hold more data (and it uses that cool blue laser).
Both HD-DVD and blu-ray use blue-lasers, so that is a non-issue. Blue-Ray has more capacity per layer (25GB/layer) as opposed to HD-DVD (15GB/layer), but a dual-layer HD-DVD has more than enough space to hold a movie and all the crappy extra feature, especially when using h264 or VC1 codec. So extra space for blu-ray is also irrelevant. Extra space may be needed for games, and IMHO thats where Blu-ray will shine. But for movies HD-DVD is a better deal because in the end you get same audio/video quality as blu-ray at half the price. Blu-ray might just end up being a gaming-format for ps3 and nothing more.
So, will I be able to buy a Total HD Player that plays both Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs?
No, its the other way round. They are claiming that these Total-HD disks will play in both HD-DVD and Blu-ray players flawlessly. If the manufacturing costs of these disks is comparable to HD-DVD/Blu-ray disks, it might just click.

VLC 0.8.6 Released

Personally, playing h264 stuff in VLC doesn't work all that great for me... I use Media Player Classic with CoreAVC, and it uses far, far less cpu.
I have also read good reviews about coreAVC on doom9 forums, but VLC player is free and open-source as opposed to coreAVC which is closed.

On windows platform, when I play h264 video files the cpu usage is considerably less than other players. Especially in comparison with mplayer-classic using ffdshow. I usually encode all my home-videos using x264 and use VLC player for playback. VLC player uses minimal cpu and video quality is awesome. Thanks guys!
I happen to use Linux, OSX and Windows, and the number one annoyance for me is a lack of clear "native-looking" GUI
QT with python bindings PyQt will give you native looking GUI on all three platforms you are interested i.e windows, linux and OSX. Now QT4 is available as GPL even on windows, so its truly "free". QT also comes with QT-designer which IMHO is the best rapid GUI designer app.
Unfortunately, the green arrow button is difficult to remove from URL bar, but it can be accomplished by hitting about:config and tweaking the browser.urlbar.hideGoButton, changing it to "true."
I used the new interface of yahoo-mail for a while but decided to switch back to their vanilla interface. The main reason why I went back was speed. It was extremely slow (at least when I used it which is couple of months back). Also it would take a lot more time to log-in. Your main screen is split into three columns, one for the folders, one for the list of messages (with message preview at the bottom frame) and a third irritating column with flash ads. I didnt like the wastage of real-estate in my browser.
If you consider giving your credit card information to potentially shady overseas organizations "safe" sure it's "safe."
You dont have to use your credit-card. Earlier you could buy an xrost-card (which is like an online currency) using paypal and use it for buying music. I think they dont allow paypal anymore because it was probably more expensive for them, but you still can by music using xrost card without ever disclosing your credit-card information.
Even if you do use your credit-card, allofmp3.com does not have access to your credit-card info as they use Chronopay, a certified third-party company based in the Netherlands and vetted by Mastercard and Visa.
What if apple had followed your advice? We would have never seen an ipod. As the old saying goes, its better to try and fail rather than not try at all.
It wont. They never mentioned that it was meant for aquatic simian primates.
Here is an idea:
1) Create an online word processor for aquatic simian primates.
2) Put million monkeys on it
3) They will have Hamlet 2.0 writtem in a year
4) Profit!
I have used dvd::rip in the past, and it kicks ass! But I no longer use xvid as x264 gives much better compression and better video quality. On windows, staxrip http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip/ is the best x264 gui available. Does dvd::rip work properly with x264?
Firefox is not coming with realplayer. Its the other way round. Realplayer will come with forefox. This is no different than google desktop teaming up with sun for java downloads.
I already use Opera over Firefox because of, among many other things, the excessive memory footprint of Firefox. I don't think bundling it with bloated software like RealPlayer is the best way to improve that perception or problem.
Einstein, read the story again. Realplayer download will include firefox and will give users the option of installing firefox while they install realplayer. No one is embedding realplayer inside firefox.
Yes he did. http://lwn.net/2000/features/ESR/. And that was back in 2000! It has been 7 years since, and hardware prices continue to drop.
... Totally....
Maybe this is the year of linux. No really. I mean, for sure

I'd be more than happy to wait in line for 6 hours so I can take home a stunningly beautiful iGirl
But when you try to fuck her, she gladly tells you that your PC dick is incompatible with her Mac pussy

Remember Simputer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simputer/ ?
By the time it was released, it was overpriced and underwhelming. I wont be surprised is this device meets the same fate.

Why is it taking too long? Isn't this information about 2 or 3 years old? I thought they had completed the migration.
They decided to go with Gentoo Linux couple of years back. They are still waiting for the damn thing to finish compiling
I did a google search for Daniel Lyons and the very first result was Is Daniel Lyons a loser?
