  1. Cultural Differences on Dodging the Negative Reaction To GE Crops · · Score: 1
GE modified food is not accepted by other people purely for cultural reasons. Two examples (I will use the French for both)

Louis le 15 recommended that French peasants, who were suffering a long drought and crop disease, to adopt the potato as a staple food. Peasants were dying left and right because of lack of food. To help the situation, the King was said to eat potatoes at dinner, yet the peasantry declined to use the potato even though it would have saved many lives. They saw a plant growing underground as dirty/unclean.

Now for a modern example. If you go to Paris and live in a French home during the summer, you know it gets HOT. And there is no air conditioning... why? Ask many French people what air conditioning will do to you. They will tell you turning on the AC makes you sick and that it is bad for you. Many people die in Paris (especially old ones) who live alone in an apartment building with no air conditioning. With air conditioning, they would survive the hot summer rather than get heat stroke. However, nearly all French citizens refuse to use AC and dismiss it as an American comfort.

GE modified foods will not be accepted by the masses until there are enough deaths or suffering as a result of hunger/malnutrition to make people aware of an alternative. History does this time and again, you just have to look.

It happens all the time, and causes no end of frustration in the IT department and especailly the end user. MS needs some real competition in this arena to help them do some actual innovation. Apple and Open Source may provide the answer that we have waited a _long_ time to see come. Outlook needs to be completely redone, maybe MS will start feeling the pressure as Linux calendar apps come of age using Apple's technology.

Is bluetooth such an energy hog that it needs two AA batteries to send moose X,Y coords and button clicks for a distance of a few feet?

The engineeer within me wishes to digress. There is an electronic component inside the Mighty Mouse that takes +1.5V and a -1.5V-- it is called an Operational Amplifier (Op Amp) and they are extermely efficient for signal processing especially at the 2.4Ghz range bluetooth works on. But the real question is: how you get that + 1.5V and - 1.5V from two batteries?

Take 2 AA batteries put a wire between them. The center will measure 1.5V, the top 3V, and the bottom 0V. In this case, 1.5V is actually your "ground."

There are several advantageous reasons for making a mouse this way, but the foremost is that, having a pseudo "split" supply, you make wireless communication and amplification much easier on the device.

So you want to run Citrix as your front end. That is a pretty good choice.

The main question is what are you running behind Citrix. Citrix itself does very little but present a screen to a virtual server. My experience has been that the thing behind Citrix- Netware in your case -is the thing that causes the most problems. Definately consider switching to an A/D setup if you have not already started migrating users from Netware to A/D. With A/D and cool projects like OpenLDAP you can do some pretty neat web based things with Java or PHP. (I have not checked in to other languages as of yet) When your company asks you to implement a fully customizable web portal using IIS (eek!) that accesses all this information, PHP is a good ally to have.

However, IE does not support this (Safari, Opera, Firefox do) and it makes advancing a web site very difficult. It would be a huge time-saver if IE fully supported XHTML. Beta 3 might change this, but then again, unfortunatlely no one in my company runs IE beta 3. Kind of a problem if you want to make a successful web site from HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

You can also use your existing Access databases (which I assume you have) by connecting across the network. Really though, you should migrate to a more powerful programming language like Java, Perl, or PHP. You won't understand now, but when you get the order to build a huge website later on you will thank the gods that you went for one of those solutions.
