Mt high school had the Netware admin drives mounted by default for every user.

It was very easy to go into: My Computer -> N: (or whatever Netware was) -> [ System files ].
And yes, if you opened a DOS prompt by changing the name of cmd.exe to iexplore.exe, you could run netadmin.

The only time I ever told anyone about my system browsing was when I found some illicit folders resting in an admin-only writable directory. In that case, I came to the IT guy at our school and told him to go to a certain path on the *shared* admin drive. Of course he asked me what I was doing, having looked at the system files-I told him he better worry about how the illicit files got there before he worried about me. I never heard about it again.

Incidentally, our school still used token ring at the time, so the computers were also vulnerable to the pandora admin exploit.

This has been on my wish list for quite some time. I'm sure Apple knows that squirrelmail has its limitations, but I'm not holding my breath for them to come out and fix it.

I own an early 2008 xserve and I can tell you the entire cycle of releases from 10.5.1 to 10.5.6 was absolutely ridiculous. Services constantly crashing and rebooting the machine, file services not working, NAT stopping, open directory getting corrupted... the list goes on. If you want to read horror stories head over to the Apple discussion forums. Early 10.5 releases were NOT ready for a production machine.

Finally, in 10.5.7, they have a decent release. Because of their track record with the 10.5 releases, I am petrified over upgrading to 10.5.8. My stuff works as it is, and it is not a constant maintenance nightmare. I will only buy SL Server if the reviews are good, the cost is low, and the stability is there. It will take a hell of a good product in 10.6 to make up for the horror of 10.5.

Saying that, I have only good things to say about the hardware. For all the configuration I've had to do, it would have better to run Linux. The hardware is very stable and doesn't break, although you should know that an Xserve is not appropriate for a home environment because its fans are LOUD.

You need to download the 10.5.8 standalone installer and try it again. On some of the updates (10.5.6, 10.5.7?) your computer is supposed to restart once or twice before it boots up normally. I rarely, if ever, have problems with the standalone installers (the only issue is that they are big downloads).

I'm not sure why this is modded informative.

SPICE is the software that does the simulation- it is not a front-end anywhere near as good as OrCad. That's like telling someone who wants to write a formal letter to use vi (or emacs). In fact, OrCad does its simulation through SPICE.

IIEE who uses a Mac, and I have looked into this. I have not found anything usable across all platforms, which is a real pain in the butt. As the OP already knows, PSPICE is owned by Cadence so the copyrights and patents for the software are locked up in that. As a result, there really aren't any viable open source alternatives.

The only thing I could think of would be to do something with LabView but that opens up a whole other can of worms in terms of teaching students how to work.

My suggestion is to get your ECpE department to subsidize VMWare or Parallels for students so that they can run PSPICE in OrCad. The world is just kinda crappy that way.

  13. Re:About Damn Time on FCC Probing Apple, AT&T Rejection of Google Voice · · Score: 2, Interesting

AT&T was most likely the cause of the removal of google voice. Apple probably has their hands tied by servicing agreements, so the only way they can get google voice (which would be great for the iphone platform) is through government intervention. I imagine there were some discussions between Apple and Google about how to make this work. Somebody fIling a complaint with the FCC is a good way for Apple to cover its contractual ass and for google to get their software on the iPhone.

Require network registration with a captive portal/walled garden. I experimented with this when the technology was very young. It wasn't great back then, but it should be well established by now.

What you need is a captive portal that takes a MAC address (maybe some other details) from a computer and maps it to a user's university login. The user should be presented with a registration webpage when he or she tries to access the Internet. This generally prevents people outside the university from accessing your network. The user should not have to register each time they hook up to the network- it should be a one time deal. You might consider giving people access up to five devices without filling out special forms.

Although it's not perfect, it is a very practical way to do access control. Some people have privacy concerns with this method. I'm merely suggesting a practical alternative that has worked for many other universities. YMMV

At this point I would intervene and seek professional medical help. Get his parents on the phone and have them make an appointment to see a good therapist. The therapist will be able to figure out if there's something medically wrong with him, and they can send him to a doctor if necessary.

He probably knows he has a problem, too, but for whatever reason refuses to accept reality because his coping mechanisms aren't good enough. He needs a way to figure out how to cope that is less self-destructive.
