  1. When will they be useful? on Nanosecrets of Everyday Things · · Score: 0

We keep hearing how nanobots, nanoprobes, nanometer devices, are going to revolutionize our lives. When can we actually start using this cool technology? To understand the article better I should have payed better attention in science.

And what will happen when the kids go eat dinner and come back to find out the AI didn't do so well and died or make a bad decision? Now the kids not only cry because they don't have the latest and greatest games, but that they don't have the latest and greatest AI. And I think we should make the kids smarter, not the technology.

  3. Education is Bad on Worldwide WarDrive Aftermath · · Score: 0

I see a lot of schools with security problems. They don't have the money or resources to get a truly secure wireless network, but want one either because a. it's the new thing to do and will "enhance learning" or b. some grant calls for wireless networks and the understaffed/overworked Network Admin (often they are the only IT staff) has to put it together. I'm a firm believer on "if you can't do it right, don't do it" when it comes to security.

And don't forget his Outer Limits appearance. I cut into the middle of that episode and what like, "what the hell is going on?" Didn't realize until today that was Bruce in Tron. I'll have to go rent it to see what he looks like back them. I'd like to see them set the film in a Linux vs. Mac vs. Windows setting. The Great OS War or something like that. Tron would of course fight for the winning OS.

This would have been great in my college days when I'd scrounge for quarters every week looking for laundry money. Would have loved to use a credit card. And for those college kids who get a credit card from their parents for "emergency purposes" what better way to spend it than on laundry and pizza. It could be a vicious cycle, buy some pizza, get it on your clothes, wash them, order a pizza while you wait for laundry, get it on your clothes... An ingenious plan for any student wanting pizza and clean clothes.

  11. Just don't abuse it on Hotmail: Not Safe For Work? · · Score: 0

We really don't have the time or energy to look at every users web usage. However, we do make sure we have the tools to prove abuse if we need to get into a legal issue. Supervisors and coworkers can pretty much tell if you are abusing your company's Internet resources. I think many users don't realize what the IS dept. is able to track on them. Just like with every moral, ethical, and legal issue: if you feel guilty doing it, you probably shouldn't be doing it.

I still think Microsoft's actions are shifty. Ok, let's release some code, but not a lot of it or enough to be completely useful. We'll bring a few *nix users over, a few Mac zealouts back, and more customers for us because they no longer think of us as the "bad guy" because we showed we can be open source. BS. It's a half-assed solution to a ass-backward situation. If they can't do it right, should they even be doing it at all?

They went with the cheapest option and are still paying for the mistake 3 years later as implementation continues. Granted it didnt' help the old database got screwed up my stupid users when they were given admin rights to the DB, but the application still sucks. Bugs, limitations, and adequate support. The funny thing is, they were recently bought out by a larger competitor, who's app they had looked at. Out guess is that in a few years the app we purchased will be ditched and they will have to go with the buyer's main product. So you definately do get what you pay for.
