  1. To be clear, most of these have not shipped yet. This is the batch to go with the Quest and Rift S kits.
If you currently have touch controllers, the insides of them do not have these sayings.

The exception is the dev kits for these have shipped and they have the sayings, "Big Brother is Watching" and "Hi iFixit! We See You!"

The consumer touch controllers that are about to ship say, "This Space For Rent" & "The Masons Were Here."
Facebook does not plan to recall any of these. You have to unscrew your controller and open it up to see these messages.

They have their template suites on Earth that they use for fitting. The problem is the materials act differently that high up. The other problem is each suite is slightly different.
These suites where built between 1982 and 1986. Originally they were pretty much the same, but all hand made. Now they sometimes are repair on Earth, but other times are repaired in space with the materials available. The templates, and even the various suites just don't match anymore. Some suites they've had to bring back because they are disintegrating.
There has been a program in place to create new suites, but it has been taking a long time, particularly due to who they can work with changing every 2 years with elections, partially due to government budgets dictating what money will be spent on.

  17. These weren't just cheaters, these were people profiteering off of making cheats. If you agree with Rockstar selling virtual money, or not, this shows that people were willing to pay money, thus a credible monetary loss for Rockstar under the law.
Adding on top of this that the cheat product, affected other people's use of the original product.

  18. It used to be only way to not have any security bugs was to not have a computer networked, not have it plugged in, or with any batteries attached, have it sealed in concrete and buried in the ground.
Unfortunately that isn't even true now with directed energy chip activation.
Could Rockstar do a better job on anti-cheats, probably, but here we are talking about an organization purposely creating and selling a tool designed to interfere with other people's use of the same product, and company profits.
Game Shark, Game Genie and other such products were deemed legal because they didn't affect profits, or other people.

  19. Ajit Pai may be a jerk and a liar, but I don't think there is legal grounds for contempt. His defense may be stupid, but it is valid.
That being said, he just admitted in court that the lawsuit against California is known to be false, making him guilty of criminal defamation against California. The California case should be speed tracked now and closed with prejudice against the FCC. Hopefully California will press charges, and considering Pai already admitted guilt in court, on record, the trail should be open and closed landing Pai in jail.
Now because this is America, and the laws don't seem to matter, I doubt any of this will actually happen, but Pai did just admit in the court of law to committing a crime.

We know from multiple sources how badly the iPhone X is selling. The most telling is that Samsung is selling the iPhone X screen to other manufacturers, which only can happen if Apple does not buy the agreed upon minimum number of units.
But to get the real story, you just had to walk into any store that sold them on launch day, or month, and notice how they were constantly in stock, even though most stores only got limited supply. I'm not talking about the pre-ordered ones either, those are stored elsewhere. On the other hand, iPhone 8 sales are doing quite well. People were skipping the 7 because of its stupid design. After seeing the disappointment that was the 8 many people I know we're waiting for the X. Most of them bought the 8 after the disappointment that was the X.

As for fooling investors, I hope they know Apple is lying, else maybe that is why Apple is doing so well, it's investors are just too stupid to see the major problems Apple is having.

  23. 35mm Not As Good As 4k on How 'Mission Impossible' Made the Leap To 4K and HDR (engadget.com) · · Score: 1

Comparing Film and digital is difficult. Each has its pros and its cons. Also 4k TVs and 4k Cinema are different resolutions doesn't help either.
4k Cinema is about 4096×2160, where 4k TV is 3840×2160. Comparing resolution is especially difficult because of quality of the film and the fact that the grain isn't linear like digital is.

Most higher end films used a film stock that is about the same resolution as 4k Cinema. Though even this is a bit of a misnomer because each grain is about 2x1 pixels, meaning that there is only half the resolution of 4k Cinema. Though some areas of each frame will look better, or worse depending on the concentration of the grains and the orientation.

Digital can also suffer from the same resolution problem though. Many consumer cameras use a Bayer Filter which only actually sees 1/2 the green spectrum, 1/4 the red spectrum and 1/4 the blue spectrum. There are full spectrum cameras that use 3 image sensors, I don't know if digital film cameras mainly use these, or a Bayer Filter. The thing is, even with a Bayer Filter, must of the missing information is calculated quite accurately in between because it is such a linear distribution making even a Bayer Filter effectively higher resolution than film.

How about dynamic range? This is something that is often brought up between film and digital. Again, the answer isn't quite as clear cut as some people would like. Film can capture colours on a more granular level, but is tends to loose the whitest whites, and the blackest blacks. That being said, it is really good at capturing explosions. Digital on the other hand covers a much better range of colour, but not quite as granular, though I think this is changing on some of the newer high end cameras with added bit depth.

In the end looking at unprocessed film and only camera processed digital, it is very clear how much better the digital is. Film just looks washed out and grainy. After a lot of processing, you can get rid of a lot of the grain and make it nice an vivid, but at that point you loose a lot of the benefits of film while taking more time to process. Now if you use the higher quality film, yes, it is a little bit better than 4K Cinema, but also is going to cost you an arm and a leg. Even most movie studios can't afford that price.

  24. Re:Increasing Competition, nVidia Falling Behind on Nvidia Looks To Gag Journalists With Multi-Year Blanket NDAs (hardocp.com) · · Score: 1

No, nVidia did not buy 3dfx, they bought the intellectual property. 3dfx folded as a company after investors, at the prompting of the CEO Greg Ballard, started bankruptcy proceedings.
3dfx was actually in a really good position when they folded. They had $500 million owed, a military contract to provide chips for Apache Choppers. Yes, they were out of active capital, but I doubt there would have been any bank that would have refused them a loan.
The biggest problem was the stupid CEO they hired. The STB purchase probably was not very smart. The Gigapixel one I'm not sure was really a mistake. They had some really good plans for the technology they acquired, unfortunately never got to implement it.
They hired a "big name marketting CEO," translation, they hired someone who would get the investors the most money in a short period of time.
Greg Ballard biggest stupid move, apart from convincing the investors to start bankruptcy, was wasting money rebranding the company. I think they spent something like $120 million on changing the logo.
I also disagree with the Voodoo 3 and 5 being significantly worse products. True, the Voodoo 3 did not have 32-bit output support, but everything inside the card was already being processed in 32-bit. This made its 16-bit output way better than other card's 16-bit output, and you were not going to be playing games on a TNT, or TNT 2 in 32-bit mode anyways. The competition just didn't have the horsepower to run even the simplest games at a playable frame rate in 32-bit. The Voodoo 5 on the other hand could when it came out, and it was competing against the TNT 2.
Now I will admit, the Voodoo 4 was a bit of a WTF product.
