Exactly. Perhaps one day you will need to sue a company for a faulty product. They get a surveillance video of you using that product, but take it out of context and you lose the case. (This is obviously a horrible story but it's almost 5am and I haven't slept in almost a day now, so cut me some slack) Things like that happen all the time in the media, where quotes are taken out of context, so what's to say it couldn't happen, or even if the video is tamper proof, etc.
Look at what IL is doing with the FOID (Firearm Ownership ID) cards and gun grabbing, even without constant surveillance. I don't know what your personal beliefs on firearm ownership are, but in Illinois, the FOID registry is being used by the ISP (Illinois State Police) and CPD (Chicago Police Department) to take away people's firearms. The trick is to tell people to re-register their FOID 30 days in advance of it expiring, then taking 50 days to process it. That 20 day window allows the ISP and CPD to deprive you of your property. To me this is a completely illegal act but the only illegal actions are ones that get caught and convicted, I guess.
Now, imagine doing that with cameras. That would be plenty effective. Or in states that allow CCW, having the cops watch you pack, then they know you have a weapon on you, where it is, what it is, etc. I can't think of a worst case scenario at the moment, but I'm sure most could come up with a good one with a few minutes of thinking.
Personally, my huge issue with all of this is that these clowns are citizens just like everyone else is. When I started hearing the word "citizen" come out of the mouth of regular police like it was a different class of person, I started getting scared, because the separation of that element of society from society itself is the basis of this problem, IMO.
I will stop myself now before I start going off on another sleep-deprived tirade...
Hit a nerve, did I? Get some perspective before you go all jihad over the difference between being stoned vs being whipped like a mule. I was making hyperbole because the law itself is stupid. It's a dumb law and for you to even state that it's a proof of prohibition working is idiocy to the highest degree. It's proof that the threat of severe physical harm is a mildly effective deterrant to drinking alcohol.
And what are you talking about with "fairy tales of Sinbad?" You do realize you've made a jump from an actual act that fucking crazy Muslims do, to some obviously fictitious storybook, right? You know what? Fucking tell me the huge goddamn difference between being whipped 40 times and being stoned? Either way it's barbaric and cruel, and FOR A VICTIMLESS CRIME of all things. No one has been deprived of life or property when one consumes alcohol. So what the fuck?
For instance, Islamic countries around the world shows that alcohol CAN BE EFFECTIVELY ILLEGALIZED.
That's a totally retarded argument. It's against their fucking religion, not simply some law. If people believe they'll get stoned to death if they drink it, well... it's not hard to see how that would reduce the rate of alcohol consumption. But that's not even a 100% effective deterrant, for example, people still adulter in Islamic countries and take their stoning.
Is that the way you want your country run? With fear of death by public stoning as a deterrant? I tell you this, the man that attempts to institute that on me better be bulletproof.
That's insanely cool. It's rather unfortunate he doesn't have any photos of the device. A nice black walnut model would look awesome, albeit expensive.
Speech Synthesizer. I had one, I was really young and my parents let some program by Scholastic try to teach me how to say words. The way it pronouned "hammer" was friggin hilarious. It was like 'hAHmmur'. I also remember having 'Hunt the Wumpus' and some Star Trek game on a cassette, and that awesome sound when you'd run the LOAD procedure.
I know it doesn't matter, but I'm totally on board with you about the Revolution being a real, well, revloution. I am honestly tired of video games. Same shit, better graphics, which only go so far until the story just cannot pick up the slack. With Revolution, either they did their marketing right or *something*, because I'm genuinely excited about playing it.
I guarantee that you are either not doing it right or are in a CSS position: that has a nonstandard implementation in Firefox. I use those elements like I'm addicted to them and have never had a failure. One thing Opera DOES do that sucks is if you have an element positioned off the current browser window, and you set it to display: block; it will not extend the window frame. No big deal, I probably shouldn't be going off the end anyhow, but that's the only thing I've noticed and I have written some pretty damn heavy AJAX windowing routines.
The ONLY minor gripes I have with the game are the load times after fights and the slow text speed (which is not adjustable). The story is pretty good, so sometimes the fights/slow scrolling text get in the way when I really just want to keep going with the story. Other than those piddly issues that really don't matter, I'd say it's well worth the $50 that I spent on it at a time that I probably shouldn't have:p
I'm curious how you know what the best way for anyone but yourself is to learn. Because if so you should write a paper about your hypothesis and become famous for finding the best way for everyone to learn.
The only thing that blows about that model is that going through multiple municipalities sucks. As a real life example, the city of Carbondale, IL does not allow you to pssess a pistol (and it might even extend to all firearms, I'm not sure and can't be bothered to look it up right now) within its limits. Fair enough, but what if you're driving though from one town that allows it, to another? Well, you can get fined/arrested for breaking a municipal ordinance. That's the only city in the state that I'm aware of that has this law, but imagine if every city had a entire catalog of different laws than its neighbors. It would be a bitch to figure out all the different stupid laws municipalities like to pass, and then remember them when you visit each one. Stupid shit like what time the liquor store closess is no big deal, but when it comes down to vehicle codes and weapons possession laws, they can vary greatly.
What are you going on about? There is something "missing" from the current model of the physical universe, and so far the idea has been that "that something" is dark matter. No one is saying that's the end-all-be-all of the standard model, it's just a placeholder until we come up with something better. It's not flawed science because science is not about finding the exact answer every time. It can't be. Newtons equations of motion are provably wrong, but you know what? They work well enough in low-speed environments that there's no reason not to use them there. And we as a species did for a very long time, and still do. Those ideas led to better discoveries when it was found they couldn't accurately describe some observed phenomena.
Man, the fact that I even had to explain this shit is exactly why I get more depressed every day.
Hell yeah I remember Prodigy. My dad and I would sit on there for hours playing MadMaze. In fact, you can still play MadMaze. Those horrid graphics...
We were on there once during a lightning storm and our modem caught some extra juice and it melted the buzzer. Thank god it didn't waste the PC. That 286 was like $2400. I must have been about 7 years old at that time.
Agreed, I had, preinstalled from the IT dept, Symantec Corporate Security Suite or whatever it's called. When the firewall kept wasting my network adapter I took it upon myself to lobotomize the entirety of that software from my computer. It would even trash the loopback, for Christ's sake.
And let me tell you, DoScan.exe is a fucking pile of shit. That's all I'll say about that, lest I get so pissed I turn into some DragonBall Z character and burn down my office with the flames coming off my body.
From what I've gathered, a Keynesian economy pretty much needs these periods of complete upheaval every so often. It's stupid but I suppose here we go again.
This is offtopic, but if you haven't already seen this, I think you should. I guess the fed is going to drop the M3 index on 23 March of this year:
here.
It's a really large support argument for the idea that the government is going start printing money like it's going out of style. Ben Bernanke and his "helicopter drop" will do quite a bit of damage to the value of the USD, I believe.
You have to mean the pickup-truck framed H2 and not a normal Hummer. A normal Hummer would more than likely "win" any accident with any vehicle short of a bus. That's if it didn't drive right over it instead.
I don't know about that one. You have a car that doesn't start: Solve the problem using muscle alone for as cheaply as the proper solution, and I'm sure you'll be a rich man quickly.
Well, if you had a 386 or above, running in unprotected flat 32-bit mode, you could easily see 2 cycle ADD, 2 cycle SUB, 20 cycle MUL, insanely horrible division. With a pentium, on the other hand, you had pretty much 1 cycle math no matter what, even most FP math could be executed in 1-2 cycles, and you had two units to boot, V and U. You could schedule your math and get a great performance boost. Now the thing with windows XP is that it's extremely bloated and complex. I will cede the fact that it will not work as well as an Amiga in that regard, simply because XP is a hog, although it provides a LOT more services than the Amiga did. A stripped linux kernel would be a better comparison. Although X is sucky too... Oh well, Can't win em all.
I don't know about that DOS/IBM not being the leader in the household. Almost every friend I had had either a Mac or a PC. It was just that way. Apple ruled for a while, because that's what they put in the schools, but the PC had marketing. Also, the era I'm referring to is the very early 90's. I think VAX was already toast by then, so perhaps our little misunderstanding is due to this. Amiga was definitely not doing too well, Amstrad was almost gone, Atari was a memory, Tandy was no longer Tandy.
It's retarded that you can only pull the file once per year though (per place, I know, but still that's only 2 times a year and I've had some pretty big discrepancies between those three...). It's a negligible amount of data to transmit just so you can keep tabs on it. I don't mind not having some machine automatically watching my accounts (and for $15 - $20 a month, it's not worth it, what a racket) but I can't be vigilant if I can't get the data more frequently. It's a goddamn scam and is set up to rape everyone.

Don't forget to tell kids to snitch on their parents if they see them doing it!

Reading is one way communication. Is it, therefore, stupid? I fail to see how your argument is valid.

Somebody's been doing that to a few other comments in this thread as well. They'll probably be caught in M2.

Why didn't you just paint them? I'm not trying to be an asshole here, I'm genuinely curious.

You guys actually did it. I'm both scared and proud.
