Yeah, but without a proper full-sized input device, how productive are you really going to be in those applications? I *hate* the touchscreen "keyboard" on the iPhone, and the teeny-tiny chicklet keys on Crackberrys and Treos aren't any better. Don't get me started on using the Wiimote to hunt and peck in Wii Opera (which is why Nintendo was totally right to introduce the USB keyboard driver).

About the best mobile device keyboard I've seen is the slide-out one on the HTC line of smartphones, but even then, composing something that's even the length of this post would take way longer and be way more of a PITA than it's worth.

I'm still not sold on ditching my laptop for a smartphone just yet.

Sure, they cost $5,000 more than, you know, regular thick-gauge cable, but the true connoisseur will instantly be able to tell the difference. After all, they have evolved their sense of hearing into something more refined than we mere mortals can comprehend. Yeah, I never understood the idea behind having Tom be everyone's default friend when they joined MySpace. The first thing I did when I was goaded into creating a MySpace account was delete Tom as my friend.
I always thought the idea of a social network was that it was made up of people you actually knew. You could see who was in your friends' networks and meet cool new people that you might actually like... it worked like a Tivo for relationships.
When everyone on MySpace is friends with Tom, then by default, everyone is in the same social network. That works well if your ultimate goal of being on a social networking site is to rack up as many "friends" as possible to stroke your pathetic pre-pubescent ego (which obviously is the demographic MySpace is going for). However, the vast majority of the people I see on MySpace seem like the kind of douchebags I go out of my way to avoid in the real world... and they're all Tom's friends. Why in the hell would I want them in my "expanded" network?

Seriously, I know you value your paycheck, but LEAVE. It sounds like your company has serious ethical deficiencies that border on criminality. Based on the fact that they're asking you to do something illegal and refuse to listen to the voice of reason-- especially in light of the fact that they told you you'd be out on your ass for bringing this up in a traceable forum-- you really need to remove yourself from such a toxic work environment. The stress of having to find another job pales in comparison to the stress of being the fall guy when their scheme is discovered.

  11. Re:Agreed on Palm Responds to the iPhone · · Score: 1

    Is the iPhone a toy?

One of the major problems the iPhone will have in adoption-- at least among real estate agents (a HUGE smartphone market)-- is its lack of an IR emitter. Most modern electronic lockboxes, which keep records of which agents have shown a property and provide good, targeted feedback data about interest in a property, require a Palm device or smartphone with IR to open them. Add to that the announcement that Cingular and Apple won't allow third-party apps, and you've basically shut out any professionals who need a smartphone to do real work.
Since I'm not an agent and don't have to worry about all that kind of stuff, I would personally love to get my hands on one... but not until they drop in price at least $200, and not until I can get one on my cell carrier. I give it 5 years.

This is admittedly small potatoes compared to the US support of Israel, and many of those "estimates" have been used as rhetorical ammunition to gain politial and public support for an invasion of Iran (a phenomonally bad idea, IMHO).
