This depends on whether or not you are actually good at soldering. I for one have destroyed many PSX's in the past due to my clumsiness. Regardless, CT forgot one important fact: if you mod your XboX, you will _permanently_ (well, without some creative hacking and another Xbox, which, in having one already defeats the purpose) lose the ability to use Xbox Live, as the Xbox's unique, internal serial number will become banned.

We're essentially "high-level" mathematicians, or at least, that is what they teach us.

I guess now the question is (from my viewpoint): Are Engineers anything more than "specialized mathematicians," or is there something that makes them different, that isn't based on mathematics? If not, then Engineers we all be. :-)

Anyhoo... hopefully this time they will offer some kind of upgrade offer. For instance, if you bought Jaguar (...which will have come out a year before "Panther"), then you can get it 50% off or something. If they don't offer some kind of upgrade offer, I will hold sway with my original thought: that they are simply trying to make money off of some redundant update, or at least, until the press release comes out :-D

Companies are still cutting costs to stay afloat, and I don't think job security is quite there yet, IMHO. But I would have to agree that it is getting a little bit better, and by that I mean no more 30+% IT dept. layoffs.

But seriously, wow, I've been waiting almost a year for this (okay, maybe more like 9 months or so). I'm pretty happy that it's here now, since this expands the number of games I can play in Linux without having to reboot back into Windows. w00t! Although, honestly, is there even a reason I should play it in Linux rather than Windows (other than me being too lazy to reboot)? Since it's a beta it's rather crippled, and at this rate, I'm not sure it'll EVER run "as well" as the Windows version. I'm not too convinced with my Linux Q3A and RtCW (Punkbuster and performance are not up to par in Linux compared to Windows). We shall see.

For instance, I emerged Open Office and it took a whopping 6 hours, which I was unprepared for. I know emerging varies wildly from system to system, so maybe not a time-dependent progress meter, but more of like a package-dependent progress meter? 3.) The only way money could be made from this is if it costs a fortune, which most people aren't going to be willing to pay.

4.) "To speed up the encryption process, most of the files is already encrypted and only a cached portion is automatically decrypted when the user is in range" --- I don't truly understand this, but it sounds like they are saying that everything will be encrypted already, and even when "decrypted" it won't really be usable until it is decrypted; such as decrypting an mp3/ogg before you can play it back, and when you're done it'll get encrypted again. Overall, it doesn't sound very "performance-happy".

See the potential problems? Still, maybe after a few "production quality releases" and a few patches/upgrades (that require you to buy new hardware), it will be usable. I guess we'll wait and see if this actually hits the market or not, and how well it does :)
