How can you be so sure that Kerry would have led America in a better direction? I think Kerry's campaign platform had some positive ideas...but most of them seem unfounded or such departures from his past that I have a hard time believing that he has really changed. Bush would have you believe that Kerry is a "flip-flopper", I would say that if true Kerry would be a better man for it. Take a look at this article: http://www.reason.com/0410/fe.jb.john.shtml I would hope that Kerry has changed from stances that he has taken in the past...but actions do speak lounder than words and I would be that if he were president he would continue to push for legislature along the same lines. On another front, Kerry spoke about bring jobs back to America from foreign soil...if he really believed so much in this, why not convince his wife to have some of her company's assets moved to America? It seems too much to me that Kerry was saying whatever he needed to get elected. I'm glad that some people saw through that. That said...I do think things in this country need improvement. I just don't think they would have come in from John Kerry.

  2. Re:What's the Big Fuss on The Eye: Evolution versus Creationism · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think what you said is true. I don't see why my belief in God has to conflict with my views on science. After all, humans were created in the image of God, so why would it seem unreasonable that he would give us the intelligence to understand some of the methods that He created to make the world work? I don't think any of us know enough about God and the way He works to rule out evolution or any other theory as a way for Him to have created humanity.

To me, how humanity was created is just a minor detail in the grand scheme of things...as long as I understand that it was through God's will and not by accident.

As far as the eye is concerned, I don't see this study as concrete fact that the human eye was indeed a result of evolution. I still find it hard to believe that something so complex and exact would be the result of random, accidental mutations...but then again I am not completely closed to this being a possibility. I would stil like to see more evidence before it is considered a fact. And even if another study does prove the evolution of the human eye, I don't really see how that precludes intelligent design. For instance many of us here write code...if you analyzed code from an abstract, nieve level you might be surprised that all code is made of the same simple elements (such as ints, floats, different loops, simple logic, etc.). Why would something designed by God be any different? If I was going to engineer an eye and had already created something similar but less advanced, I would probably start with the less advanced eye as a base for my design and change or improve it as necessary. To me, something like evolution -- the improvement of an existing design -- is very intelligent.

I guess what this all boils down to is me viewing science as insight into the mind of God. After all, if you believe that God created humans then you must believe that God created our minds with the knowledge that we would one day figure out how very complex systems on Earth function. So why would He give us so much intelligence if it conflicts with the idea of Him existing?

What you said is true, but I think it would be an excellent feature if the system operated like this: I could tell my car that I'm going on my usual route to work but to keep me alert of any problems on my path. Having this information the car would know that I don't need turn by turn navigation, but if it hears of any traffic problems, it could calculate the fastest alternate route. I think this would be useful because I know my way to work, but I pretty much only know of the major roads that get too much volume on a daily basis. If my car could figure out a faster way to work, with less traffic, on the fly I think I would buy such a car or device.

Yes, I was kind of surprised that my school, Drexel University, didn't make the list. Since Drexel is mostly an engineering/science/technology focused school, it seems like it should be up there. I know there is a lot of technology on our campus, plus everyone is required to own a computer. This means that there is not much use for the labs outside of commuters who don't have laptops, other small groups of people that need a lab, and the ones required for a class. Most of my geekier friend even have 2 or 3 computers in their dorm rooms. Obviously a school isn't going to build many labs if most of the population has a computer that they carry with them all day. Also, some of the information was flat out wrong. For Drexel, they are marked as having no web space when we actually get a small chunk as well as other accounts on various servers.

This way they don't have to deal with viruses, worms, porn and the like. Normal users can have their network while more serious users can have a separate one.

I think many people (even ones who are technically inclined) are easily mislead by the 64 bit advance in chips. If you think about it, normall processors are 32 bits, so 64 must be twice as fast right? It's not that 64 bit processors are twice as fast, just faster when dealing with data that needs the precision of 64 bits. Now, I'm not very sure how much 64 bit data modern games send through the processor, but I would imagine that in any decent game, the GPU matters much more. For comparison sake, I believe modern GPUs have 256 bit processors. I think that for some PC gamers, the whole stigma around bits might have carried over from console days, when progress was usually measured in bits (first 8, 16, 32, 64, and now most people don't care how many bits their xbox is -- which would be 32 for the CPU). I think most games and desktop users will not need 64 bits in the CPU for some time.
