What is the best way for new IS managers to convince their superiors of the need for widespread change?
Walk into your superiors office, pull down your pants, and take a shit on the desk. Turn around, and sing 'battle hymn of the republic' on your way out the door. Look for a better job where you dont work for people with a lack of understanding of how the world works today.
The moral of the story? Nobody ever gets 'convinced' of the need for change. Whats it gonna take YOU to be convinced that it is YOU that needs to change your job?
Because when I read a book, I like to open a new book every time I have to turn a page.
Perhaps you should think about who it is that is stuck in 'obsession'.
But, I am curious about your 'bugs'. Was it a firefox issue? Did you test the same sites with firefox on other machines? Also, keep in mind, there are some web designers who were TAUGHT to write pages for IE. If its a tag that only IE uses, why would you expect it to work in firefox? And if the website you are visiting only writes in IE, are they really going to be telling you anything important?
It seems to me that the problem may be the way Windows interfaces with your video card and the way it is processing images. I have seen it before, and will see it again. So dont be so fast to assume the problem is a 'bug' in firefox. It may just well be that windows is shitty everywhere and moving one toothpick brings the whole thing down. Were they arrogant, as you say? Not anymore than you are when you assumed the problem was with firefox and submitted a 'bug'. Hopefully, you submitted something with more substance than, "It doesnt load pages right". Perhaps with a log file, and a running process list at the very least. It seems like you have a nasty habit of externalizing your own character flaws into the outside world.
Obsessed? Arrogant?
From my side of the fence, based on the information you wrote yourself, those two traits describe you, not anyone or anything else.
Time stamps in the software indicated that the table was deleted two days before the manuscript was submitted to The New England Journal on May 18, 2000
So, using your line of thinking, did someone with no computer knowledge go back in time 5 years and change these things? Because, after all time travel is such a common occurance it is only logical that after the confusion came out last september about vioxx, that someone would go back in time to plant evidence against merck.
But they were clever about it, they were thinking long term. The data that was deleted was beneficial to merck at that time 5 years ago. So even though it would have screwed over the sabateour for 5 years, the time has finally come to reap the benefits?
Cliche perhaps, but have you ever heard of the principle of Occams razor?
After taking a cursory look at that project, which I can say I have not dealt with personally, or even installed. I can tell you that I see many serious problems on the web page 'support forum'. I dont have the time to spend fixing all the possible errors that I dont currently run across when dealing with the FC3 version of SELinux that I have been using for some time now, across a few different kernels.
Can you tell me why Id want to use that over a distribution that already has that functionality built into it? I have enough customization to do after a distro install for a server, why do I need one more thing?
Im not being a troll either, but if you can offer convincing examples, I would be interested to hear them.
The actual prudent thing to do would be to use said algorithm and see what domain is generated on the 5th of January 2006, before the date even arrives. Alert ICANN registrars of the situation. Monitor that domain name, and watch for the second it gets assigned an IP. When the particular domain begins to point to a global IP address, then you can nab the perp.
As a bonus, in the above scenario, you dont have to wait for all the compromised machines to bog down yet another unsuspecting network on the 5th of January 2006. win-win. well, that dude that gets caught doesnt win...
Im sure somewhere you had a point. But it has long since departed.
You debating and logic skills are showing the thought processes of a 10-year old. Im not kidding, if this is who you are, and you are over the age of 20, you should find some form of professional help. Trust me, your life will get a lot worse before it gets better.
The only question now is, will you be the one who stops the slide, or will it be someone else who does. And just a piece of advice, if you leave it to someone else to stop your slide, you will not be in a very good place in your life.
Hats off to Zonk, really. I've had my fair share of complaints against his 'style' of writing, but now it seems that he has gotten an order of magnitude better at it. I think you may have found your groove and nicely matched it up with the audience of slashdot.
Thank You zonk, you are back on the list of editors that come up on the home page. Just dont blow it! hehe
I can appreciate your attempt to be unbiased here, and see the benefits. However, there are a few problems with the way you are looking at this...
Windows is definitly NOT the gold standard for desktops, any more than driving on the right is the gold standard for rules of the road.
When all the people who use windows now in an office, or other slave labor, have grown up using nothing but windows they come to think of it as 'standard'. I think *nix style GUI's have been far far superior to windows for a long time, and that is based on actual stability and not on colorful widgets being rearranged and labeled an 'upgrade'.
Sure, windows has it purposes, as does driving on the right. It allows the greatest common denominator to use a computer, and causing minimal damage to those who actually know how to use a computer(or drive).
Ive been an admin myself for about that long, and I can tell you flat out that it doesnt matter if the desktop OS was written by martians, when the people you are administering dont pay attention to instructions on how to use a program. When those people complain that the 'system is down', or 'these computers are garbage', it rarely is either of those.
Cant get your email sir? Ok, what is your email password?
Password?
Yes, the password you have been using, the one that was written down for you so you could use email.
I have a password?
Ok, I will write it down one more time, dont lose it this time!
(5 minutes later) It still doesnt work! These computers are garbage!
And you typed in your password?
Why do you keep telling me about this password, havent we resolved that?
And on....and on....and on...
I hardly think the OS is the problem for these people
What's wrong with a study that finds that there is a relationship between X and Y and should be studied further?
Nothning is wrong with further studying that. However, that is not what this study does.
As I said, it takes a physical measurement, and then forms a hypothesis. This hypothesis is then used as the 'result' of the study. Therefore, bad science.
Im not making a judgement on the usefulness of this data, just the procedure.
From the cursory look provided by the artice, this seems like horrible science, and something more likely to be 'reported' around the first or second week of february.
There was no study of the 'affected' people who fell madly in love to determine if this chemical was in their blood before they fell in love. There is just as likely a possibility that those people had the chemical in their blood the whole time. In this case, love is the result of the higher presence of the chemical, and not the cause. This study does nothing to say that this is not the case. In other words, it answered nothing. It only measured the presence of this chemical and then made a 'hypothesis' which was used as the 'result' of the study... embarassing
repeat after me, "Correlation does not imply causality". Why is this a hard concept for people to accept? It should be the wall being banged on until it falls when such an occurance comes up, but instead it is used as the easy answer to all to many 'studies'.
Why is it that when someone disagrees with the assumption of christmas it is assumed they dont have kids?
I have a child, and I agree that it is rediculous to make up stories like this FOR YOUR RELIGION. There is nothing wrong with stories, there are plenty of them around to enjoy. But none of them claim to be a reason of celebration in your REAL LIFE. That is where the line is crossed in my, and many others, opinion.
So, no I dont agree with you that lying to someone to put a smile on their face is a 'good thing'.
If you still derive joy form the memories of being decieved as a child, perhaps therapy is more what you need instead of celebration of fantasies and deception.
Im not rah-rah-ing XML. Far from it. I am rah-rah-ing the fact that technology keeps driving forward at a rate similar to a bulldozer. While not always lightning fast, its effects are easily noticed over time.
Its not the fault of XML that your boss is a tightwad, and uninformed. Its not the fault of XML that you are using outdated equipment. Its sounds more like you dont have any authority to say what does or does not happen. Its like m e walking down a city street and being forced to give money to the bums because the person walking with me tells me to. Not a situation I would be glad to be in....
Perhaps its time to move out of the education/non-profit sector and find a sector that can supply the hardware you need to run the applications of today. I made a similar move not all that long ago, having worked for a large non-profit company in Chicago. When I switched over to the tech side of a sector of the economy that is awash with money, things changed drastically. I wasnt hitting road blocks constantly, and getting frustrated with every little addition. Need a new web service app? cool, Ill have it running in a few days on one of the spare dual-proc servers. What Im trying to tell you, is that you need to move out of where you are if you feel that you are not being as effective as you could be. Otherwise, it is you holding yourself back, not your boss, not your vendors, not your hardware, and certainly not XML. You have to at some point accept responsibility and stop trying to point out the failures of the rest of the world.
The concept of XML is something I do appreciate. I like the fact that communication has the ability to done between applications. I like the 'agnostic' way that data can be transferred without being 'converted' every time it passes between platforms or applications.
Perhaps if you were not running a windows operating system on those 128MB PC's you wouldnt be having such an issue. You need to know where your supply weaknesses are, and direct your attention at those points. When you fail to correctly identify those weaknesses you may end up criticizing the wrong thing, for the wrong reasons. Is XML perfect? no. But certainly not for any of the reasons you have put forward so far.
I wouldnt suddenly be upset with gas prices if I went out and bought a H2 hummer. It would be better to not buy the hummer because I know that gas prices are so high. To sit around trying to discredit the gas prices constantly makes you seem to have a very narrow vision of the big picture.
Most people are used to applications that don't communicate, so they'll see this as their savior!"
Now youre getting it.
Of course XML isnt a magical potion. It does however, allow those applications that people arent used to communicating together, to communicate. And yes, it uses compression that takes up memory. You obviously have some problem with that philosophy. After all, who needs more than 640K of RAM anyway?
Face it, one day you will not have a Hard Disk drive whirring around in your cute little PC. It will ALL be RAM. Or more exactly, memory modules using 'chips', instead of platters. Think of it as a big USB drive. Its coming, and not too far down the road. And personally I cant wait!
Think of it, remember when hard drives barely existed, or were in the form of actually using cassette tapes? You didnt need massive data storage. Then applications grew and it became more efficient to have a place to keep them instead of loading 5 disks every time you wanted to run it. So now we had to have a big clunky box around that we came to expect as being there every time the PC was on, then it even REQUIRED it to be there. Now we are moving back, as momory prices fall and densities continue to rise, it will be trivial to have your "Hard Drive" in the form of chips, instead of giant inefficient spinning disks. And the PC will have made another 'transition'.
Personally, Ive found so may more groups that are orders of magnitude better than the garbage found on the radio and what is 'popular'. But then, the only reason its popular is because people want to buy the song they have heard 50X in one day... for some reason...
When did it end for me? Around 1999-2000 when the group 'metallica' put their ugly mugs before congress and told of the big bad wolf out on the internet that was stealing from them. There was no bigger irony I have seen than the group that wrote the song "Master of puppets" themselves being the biggest puppet ever. If you looked real close, you can see the RIAA's hand up their ass moving their mouth. That was the last year I bought a 'hardcopy' CD.
There is just so much more better music out there, I wonder if the RIAA has a clue how much they are pushing people twords it?
Knowing that you dont actually think that jurors are 'stupid' I still wonder why the phrase persists? Maybe it has more to do with having a job that doesnt pay enough for it not to matter if you have jury duty. If you are salary, and get called to jury duty, your employer legally CANNOT dock your pay, or even use those days as vacation time.
So, too stupid to get OUT of jury duty!? Hell, if I still had that salaried job,Id be pulling teeth to get ON one as often as possible.
Maybe its that these people are too 'stupid' to not be working anything else than a crappy hourly job where the time off ACTUALLY does matter.
Yes the article was clearly written to be non-alarmist.
The summary, however, was not written very well at all.
Im not disputing any facts, just the presentation by the editors on slashdot. Who seem to be getting worse at the same compound rate described above...
How is it, exactly, that I kill millions of animals a day?
Do you have white blood cells, nasal mucus, and stomach acid?
And this is the COLLOSAL misunderstanding of science that you possess! White blood cells dont kill millions of animals a day. They may cause CELLS to no longer exist, thereby deriving the energy from them. But they certainly dont go rampaging out of my body, or anyone elses for that matter, killing hordes of animals grazing on the grassland.
It would be best for you, and everyone else if you stayed in your little town, and kept your 'ideals' and 'priorities' in that little backwater. That way you can do something for the rest of the world by only letting it affect your immediate neighbors.
The universe does not share your high regard for human life. Perhaps you should think about why you think the mebers of the species that you are a part of are so important. Low self-image perhaps?
ScuttleMonkey. What is wrong with you? Do you get paid to take the facts and re-write them?
Please look up the definition of the word PROPOSED in the dictionary. I do not think that word means what you think it does.
You cant then go on and say that now that the penalties ARE more severe, who will be the first one to go to jail.

The same situation you find yourself in now. However, ScuttleMonkey has quickly become the next reactionary that stuck out. Although not nearly as bad.
You can change which editors you will see stories of. After awhile, it will become obvious that that kind of editor is not wanted here. Its the way slashcode works:)
The more people that understand it, the more diluted the labor market. The lower the price you can command for doing this for other people who dont want to be bothered. The less money I make.
Ip4 is 'simple' to you because you are familiar with it. The same reason ipv6 is 'not simple', because you are not familiar with it. If you put the two in front of somebody who didnt know either one, ip6 would be pretty simple too. Was it 'simple' for you when you were 2 years old?
You are happy with ip4 which is fine, dont fix something that isnt broke. Hell, my grandparents still listened to music on AM radio. Did it matter that FM was better to transmit music? No. They were 'used to' hearing it on AM, and were happy with that.
Enjoy your life of stagnation. Man, I hope I never get there!
I live in the same state you do, which means at some time in the future I may run across your children when they are adults. To have a successful society, the members of it must be able to use rational abilities at the same level of those around them. And while it may be great in a town of a few hundred people, where Im sure there are plenty of unique experiences for children. That is not an advantage when they interact with those who, at the outset, will have a large ability to control the direction of their lives if they dare to stray away from that small town.
Sure they are your children. But why would I say nothing and want them to suffer by the same archetypes that you do? Also keep in mind, that the same 'thought process' that led to you being raised an atheist, and later converting to religion, will more than likely lead them to becoming non-religious. You have turned into your parents, whether you realize it or not.
Walk into your superiors office, pull down your pants, and take a shit on the desk. Turn around, and sing 'battle hymn of the republic' on your way out the door. Look for a better job where you dont work for people with a lack of understanding of how the world works today.

In all seriousness, that was a pretty funny one. I havent seen any new ones of those in awhile, still like the PDA episode...

So greenhouse gases are causing the earth to get warmer, thus increasing the rate of evaporation of water above previous levels.
And somehow its the water vapor that is released from this evaporation, from increased heating, that is warming the earth?
If I hit my tumb with a hammer, and it starts bleeding. It would be like saying it is the blood that is causing the pain.
Worst article summary ever!
You dont want it.
Butt out?
