  2. Training Licenses on Licensing Software to Individual vs. Corporation? · · Score: 1

I think it would be great if you could download commercial software, using it on a learning basis, and just have to provide your contact information. For example, if it's a compiler like Visual Studio, you can write code, etc, but any code you write must be released into the public domain if it leaves your computer. The understanding would be that if you were caught using the software for anything other than a learning basis, or make money off the product you are using for free, the software maker has the right to bill you for its product.

Was there any sort of policy like this present at your company?

    Those are some interesting ideas.

Regarding morphine in particular, I have read in a couple of places that the more pain a patient is in, the more of morphine and other pain relievers they can tolerate. For example, a patient in late stages of cancer can tolerate doses of morphine that would kill a healthy person.

I apologize but I do not recall the sources for this information.

I had always thought that headaches were caused by tension in the muscles around the skull. I had also assumed that Tylenol relieved the pain by relaxing those muscles or helping to dissipate the stress. I guess it was something my mom had said when she was in nursing school. It is interesting how little we understand about ourselves. I wonder what other drugs are out there that are frequently prescribed, and about which doctors either don't understand how they work or don't fully understand the effects.

  12. Re:bandwidth costs and formats on DIY Web "Television" Station? · · Score: 2, Informative

I think this is actually an awesome and practical use for P2P technology that won't have people (read the TV industry) squealing about copyright infringement. If randomkind releases each video segment into the public domain, or uses the GPL for his video segments,

I think you are correct in suggesting that randomkind and his associates put together a website that shows their services. Their website could include information like show synopses, upcoming features, etc.

Perhaps they could include small teasers of each show or segment, and then release the full-length files on P2P networks like kaaza and napster if possible. The website could include tips for where to locate the files.

I think the cost of the bandwidth necessary to provide direct streaming, as well as licensing to record his segments in DivX, real, mpg formats would be prohibitive. Perhaps randomkind could allow people to get the segments off P2P networks for free and make donations if they are so inclined, and as well provide a subscription service for people who don't want to go hunt for the files and want to stream it directly from his site. This might help combat the costs.

  19. Appropriate channels for action on Contractor Dilemmas - Moral and Financial Obligations? · · Score: 1

I think it is inappropriate to contact the VC that is involved.

You knew the risks going to work for a startup. I do not wish to sound harsh, but that is the simple truth. Older, more established companies have policies and procedures to which we as employees must adhere, and those procedures can be a drag...but...those procedures also protect us as employees because they set clear expectations. With a startup, it's different because in a startup usually the emphasis is on "make more money, sell more stuff, get the product out".

Did you sign a non-disclosure agreement? If you did, you might risk forfeiting all your payment altogether if you contact the VC and I think the contractor would be perfectly right to withhold it from you in those circumstances.

What the startup is doing to you is wrong, and should be addressed. Five weeks is an excessive amount of time to way for pay that you have already earned.

I would take whatever documentation that you have, such as your NDA, emails or your written agreement for pay terms, and written documentation such as emails, etc saying what milestones have already been met to your local department of labor and see if they can't help.

You might also wish to consult an attorney.

Whatever you decide to do, I think taking vigilante action of your own by contacting the VC would be just as wrong, if not more wrong, than the startup withholding pay from you.
