The problem with using the top 5% of data users is that it
is an upside down pyramid scheme. As they slow down
the top 5% our data usage becomes less and less
because we are not able to use the services that we would
normally use. Making the average become less and less.
When this all started I was getting slowed at around 10
gigs then 8 then 5.
For those that listen to Leo Laporte on TWiT, didn't he mention something similar by some big-name company? This was maybe 2 or 3 months ago. It also used Facebook as a source. Anybody remember what it was?
I've always had an interest in getting into computer forensics field but do not wish to become a police officer. Is that the only way? What would be a basic roadmap toward a career in this field (for somebody that already has a CS degree)?
I registered July 1st, 2002. Like others, I still have the registration email. Like others, I didn't register when I first came across SlashDot until I actually wanted to comment. I don't remember when I actually came across SlashDot, but I doubt I would have had a 4-digit uid had I registered sooner.
What about when a particular application has an update avaliable, requires you to upgrade no matter what, will not let you keep the version you have installed and if you do, the application will stop working. Not too long ago, I came across a Win98 PC that, while trying to view trailers at apple.com it required an upgrade for Quicktime. Unfortunately it did not provide a new version for Win9x, only Win2K and above. Without the latest version, the trailer wouldn't start playing because it *NEEDED* the new version of Quicktime....but somehow, a week prior, the very same trailer worked fine. Not being able to find a way around this, I had to *UPGRADE THE OS* to be able to upgrade Quicktime to be able to view a simple trailer!
I don't understand what's the big deal. Yes, it has some degree of illegality. However, would it also be illegal if you were a consultant for any company wanting this type of probing on their servers? No! So why not simply ask local company X if they would be interested in a free analysis of their servers which is normally valued at $xxK. I'm sure there would be many takers. You now have eliminated all illegalities in your assignment and can proceed with it. It's that easy. No need to get all butt-hurt about it.
Dear Microsoft
I am the prime minister of Nigeria. I am writing in hopes that you will assist us in squashing all the bad publicity of the "Nigerian Scams" by helping us thwat them out of existance. Doing so requires a lot of resouces, which is hte purpose of this letter. If you would like to contribute to our efforts, please reply to this email so that we can send you information on how you can wire funds to The Anti-Nigerian-Scam Organization.
Thank you!
what turns me off about MythTV and FreeVo is that it seems like not just anybody can build a box for this specific purpose. a few years ago i was looking into getting a PVR and MythTV andFreeVo were two opitons. because of all the work that seemed to be required to get all the hardware/software working, i decided to get a manufatured standalone unit....i ended up with ReplayTV.
i like my decision i upgraded the HD of my first unit within the first week of buying i. i paid the lifetime subscription free soon after which by now has paid off when compared to paying per month. however, i have a second unit that i've been paying 6.95/mo (discount from the regular 12.95 for single unit owers b/c i have multiple units) for a few months now. i've been lazy about picking up the phone to get the lifetime subscription (if it were 12.95/mo i would have gotten the lifetime sooner). now, i can't seem to justify paying for lifetime of $299 when i can a SageTV with a dual tuner and remote for my PC...at less than that. This product seems to be (i haven't tried it myself yet) a cleaner setup than MythTV or FreeVo. SageTV also offers its service with no subscription required....so yeah that's the conflict i have now.
my sister used to work for a state program that offered medical assistance (called "MAP" - medical assistance program) to anybody who was within a certain (low) income bracket. her part of the job was reviewing some of the required paperwork to determine if an applicant qualified. she came across many cases where old people's SSN's were used by other people to work. the income earned was then tied to the actual SSN owner, pushing their income higher, resulting in the applicant not qualifying.
so this is one way it works, person A's SSN gets stolen by person B. Person B works under the assumed identity of person A and gets a "honest earned" check. Person B still claims unemployment because technically person B is out of a job. In doing so, person B does have taxes witheld, but the unemployment check is far greater.
my sister also came across some cases where some people didn't qualify because some system showed they were getting social security checks when the person hadn't received any. more often than not, when this was discovered, it was the case where somebody else was stealing their funds right from under their noses. similar things happened to their unemployment funds.
aside from these two types of cases, my sister would also encounter applicans where they were obviously not in need of medical assistance, but she could not go out of her way to investigate further. she simply had to go with what the applicant provided.
eventually she got sick of the types of scams going on (as the 3 listed above) that she eventually quit.
except. they aren't dupes. one is a lite version and the other isn't. the one that is lite is free from spyware. the one that isn't lite is loaded with it. this new article is about the release of the lite verson. the one you linked to is about the one that is not "lite"...so how is it a dupe?
well let's start off by stating that obtaining a new SSN is not easy to come by from what I understand. it is very tough to do so and even if you do manage to get it done, your old SSN will still be tied to your new SSN. so let's say your old one was 1234 and your new one is 6789, when somebody checks "6789" it will have a note stating your previous SSN was "1234" making the whole thing pointless.
the best thing you can do, in my opinion, is place a "Security Alert" on your credit report/history/whatever. what this basically does is places a note on your credit report stating that your identity may have been comprimised, advising whoever is looking up your credit history to more thuroughly verify your identity. you can alert one of the three credit bureaus to place this "Security Alert" and that one will alert the other two. you can do this online here, plus you get a very basic rundown of your credit report (free). Note that this "security alert" is good for only 90 days, afterwhich the notice is removed from your credit record.
you can unlock region codes with that player....
- open the cd tray
- press 7 8 9
- press ok
- press 0 for region free, or another number corresponding the new region you'd like to select.
the number entered will appear in the screen.
enjoy your region-free dvd plaeyr.
I keep my Best Buy receipts for certain items. I never knew about the fading issue until I had to use an old receipt to take in my monitor (no image, good thing i bought the warranty). The receipt was very faded and could not really tell what the it was for. So I scanned that receipt and went off to the store to take in my monitor (and scanned the rest when I got back home). They gave me no problems. I guess the barcode was legibile enough to pull the record from the system...or maybe with other info not obtained directly from the receipt (like my name). Well, about a year later, my monitor went out again. By this time the original receipt was nothing but a white paper with black/brownish spots. Again, no problems. Actually, that was because I took a printout of the scan I had done the first time I went in. When they saw the original receipt, the were doing all sorts of face gestures trying to read it. That's when I busted out my scanned printout.
You guys are very quick at pointing out how ridiculous this idea sounds. Have you guys seen fotage of the wingsuit in use? It's pretty impressive. Why is it totally impossible to take it a step further? Don't you think that before the wingsuit, people were ridiculing it? And the parachute too? And the airplane? I'm not saying it's a sure thing, but it may very well be possible to land safely with a wingsuit.
i believe there is a website about this civil disobediance act. in fact, i came across it here on/. i don't remember the site, but it had a picture of what you're talking about and asking visitors to submit similiar pics.
what are the legal issues behind having security cameras *outside* of my home such as ones pointing at my driveway, front/back door enterance??
do i have to have posted signs? "premesis may be under video survelance" ??
THIS!

How can they turn on a router if it's missing?
/scratching my head
exact same scenario here.
if i could actually get a 3G iPhone....

There's also questionville.com which is free (for now at least).

is exploit A which has bugs a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h, and i
the same (quantitively) as exploit B which is due to bugs y, and z?
just because IE list 6 exploits doesn't mean they are due to 6 bugs.

Is it still considered one file if the movie was split into .rar files??? .r01, .r02... .r95?
so basically if we ever plan to "wire tap" a PC is to make some sort of extensively long legal mumbo jumbo EULA to make it legal?

My personal highest (well not on my own pc, but one I clieaned up) was 1,161. I even saved a screenshot (ImageShack - Free Image Hosting).
