I would mostly agree. Where I work 3 of our 5 employees use Linux as a desktop 100% of the time. Many of our clients are in the process of rolling out Linux desktops to staff. When it comes down to the truly important business-related tasks (ERP client, e-mail, office software), Linux does most everything they need NOW...very cost effectively (think LTSP).
One sticking point we are running into, though, is printing. If a user has multiple printers that they will use throughout the day printing is simply a nightmare. It seems to work differently in every application. And to control things like duplex modes and such it seems to require root access into the printer manager! Am I missing something?
If you are hopelessly addicted to Moz Xft (anti-aliased fonts) like me, you will want to check out a build of Phoenix with Xft. It makes me pee with excitement.
It was my understanding that the "goal" of the open source community was to get a "desktop Linux" up and running to compete with MS.
It is a misunderstanding to say that the goal of the Open Source community is merely to produce a desktop software that competes with Microsoft Windows. If that were the case it would not even be worth bothering...if you want an alternative to Windows then go buy a Mac. Rather, the goal of the Open Source community is more along the lines of re-gaining control of the software that runs our lives. It is about freedom, it is about community, and it is about hacking for the fun of it. I don't disagree with what you are saying about the importance of a simple installation and maintenance for the desktop market...we've got a LONG way to go. Just do not lump the success of our reach into that market with the strides we are making in other areas (like the server market).
This is not running X11. From the Trolltech website:
Qt/Embedded has much lower RAM and ROM requirements than X. Clients also access the display directly for optimal graphics performance. Additional features such as anti-aliased fonts and alpha blending, not offered by X, are also available.
Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, go to work at the mill every day for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were LUCKY!
I think the misconception lies in the unfortunate naming of the collection of essays published by O'Reily. People pick up this book and write of the implications of CatB (the title of the collection of essays) when they are probably talking more about essays like The Magic Cauldron.
I just finished that book...it is actually a biography of Stallman. Interesting point mentioned in the book (along the lines of using proprietary software to format it) is that it was going to be published as an eBook causing a fallout between the author and Stallman. Com'on, what was the author thinking!
Select 'Hide Deleted Messages' from the view menu and it will behave as you wish. Does anybody actually like how it behaves by default? Everyone I talk to gripes about the 'marked delete' behavior.
Perhaps we already have one (correct me if you know), but it seems that a
lot of important tech issues are being decided in Washington by the highest
bidder. Two things get action in the U.S. political system...money and votes.
They pay attention to groups of people - like the steel workers of america
- because they vote uniformly in mass and all contribute financially
to their PAC. There are way more of us (the open source community) than
many of these unions...we just need organization. I'd be more than
willing to give the amount I owe in taxes each year to the Free Software
Foundation to balance off as a tax credit if they acted as a PAC for our
cause.
...and thinks it kicks ass! C'mon people, why build something as excessive as a digital picture frame out of something somebody else could actually use.
I was going to write up a post pointing out all of the reasons why RedHat could never become a Microsoft (or why there will never be another Microsoft for that matter), but what is the point? This shit is getting old. Even if RedHat is the top Linux certification program, they become the top Linux consulting outfit, and conqueror the commercial distro market they will never be the predatory monopolist that Microsoft has become because of the GPL.
NevyOS is a full desktop distro built off of the QT/emb toolkit - preview release 1 was 8 MB total. It runs all out of the kernel framebuffer so it is wicked fast on even the slowest hardware. There were mailing list posts.saying they were going GPL in preview release 2, due in a matter of weeks. The site. has just went down for construction, so expect the big announcement soon.

A big part of the blame falls on the shoulders of a corrupt IPO system that over-inflates stock valuation to benefit a greedy few at the expense of the public and the firms that are being offered. Check out the Frontline (PBS) special dot.con.
The crap some of the nations biggest investment firms are getting away with hurts the public way more than the insider trading / accounting scandals that are flooding the press today.

My friend actually picked up an eMachine with StarOffice pre-installed last year.

So TuboLinux is picked as the Linux distro for 9,700 cash registers at Sherwin Williams, but who is the big winner...IBM because they win the servicing contract. Like it or not, the future of commercial Linux is in either services (consulting, certification, customization, etc.) or per-seat-license type distros.
Fortunately there exists non-commercial Linux distros that do not need to show a profit to stick around. No need to impress the VC; no need to mislead the press to preserve market valuation. If lots of people are using the distro then that is good...if not then that is fine too because the maintainers are still using it. It brings images to mind of the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail who gets his arms and legs chopped off and still believes he is invincible.
It's not just a remote control solution...it also allows you to run many applications that would not be available to the Windows platform otherwise. Look here
for the full list of currently available packages. I come from a primarily MS shop and we only use cygwin in a couple of places, but when Evolution and Mr. Project become easily available we'll be deploying it much more widely.

Modem users downloading during dinner...yea, that'll be the day. It took me days to download The Matrix divx over my broadband connection on Kazaa. Wait, no, I mean I have this friend who told me he spent days downloading it.
