Huh ?
Maybe in the US this trend didn't take off. But here (france) they're trying to turn everything into throwable products since last year or so, and it seems to work alot, despite the fact that it's very expensive. They make 1 use dose of shampoon, cleaning towels, whatever, then make huge ad campaigns and sell it for 2x the normal price without any problem (I think this is because they advertise those products much more than their normal equivalent, which eventually leads people to think they are better)
Hum I don't know what ADD and AD/HD are, but I hear monitors whining all the time too. I didnd't know it was uncommon... In fact i'm sure that someone who knows how a screen work can easily explain this. Especially i have a 70cm but very cheap TV whose screen literally screams. The more clear (white) the colors are, the louder. I often have to turn the volume up to cover the noise. Same thing for (analog) monitors, but much more acceptable to me.
Now no more, I went to an apple shop today, there are logic audio screenshots everywhere on the flyers. Same thing at the applestore iirc. Apple must have given them serious money for exclusivity...
Which gives me one more reason to buy a powerbook. Aaaah it hurts, I want one noooow !

What will be the next step after we detect a signal?
Sigh, the answer is so obvious:
US will just launch the biggest space missile they have at that time right on the signal emmitting thingy and declare they just killed bin ladden !
Changing your position when it suits you is intellectually dishonest and is known as hypocrisy. Have the balls to hold your position.
Nah, what you talk about is not "changing position when it suits you", it's called having the intelligence to judge a situation, and not blindly say "I'm ok with UN, whatever they say, because that's my camp". That's what all those pesky politicians do all the time you know, they'd never agree that the other camp has a point. That's childish.
I was for UN control of the Iraq situation, and I think it ws a very very bad move for the US to do what they did. But this time it was about a war you know with real people that dies and all that. Whatever the final move would have been for the US, it could have been wise to listen to what the rest of the world thought about it.
Here, we're speaking about the frigging internet ! Nobody will die from receiving one more spam or whatever, and we all know that UN (or whatever) control could only make the internet more restrictive.
The U.S. should rightfully continue to refuse to agree to any treaty that has not been shown to be in the best interests of the citizens of the U.S.
Suuuure. So, speaking about kyoto, you think it's legitimate that the first pollution creator of the world refuses to reduce it at all ? At the cost of degrading the earth ? Who cares, after all it has no direct impact on the US citizens right now. Let's fuck the world as usual, others be forced to find solutions anyway
Look at some of the top games that have been cross-platform: [...] See any successful games there?;-)
Err I think it's the other way around, those games were ported because they were top selling games, and even on a "small" platform, they could find people to buy them. (ok, id games are exceptions, they were probably made portable from the start because they think it's cool and clean) They haven't been successfull in the first place because you could play them on linux or whatever... I mean, probably something like 99.99% of players don't give a shit about portability, they don't even know what the word means.

(And if you want to do them, maybe you need to move to a different Country? God bless Canada and the blank media tax; I don't mind paying a little bit on every CD-R for a music piracy license!)
Ha ! Think so ?
I don't know about Canada, but here in France we pay a tax on every cdrs, and IIRC on every storage device, HDD whatever (because everyone knows that if you buy a HDD or a CDR, it's to fill it with mp3s...)
It'a quite stupid, but at least you'd think that since you've paid a tax because you copy medias it's now your right to do so... Not at all ! copying a cd to your friend is still illegal, file sharing is still illegal, and we hear all time on TV that "media producing companies" are complaining because we're nasty pirates who suck their money. Never mind the fact that on any CDR I buy (mostly for archiving raw sounds that I produced), I have to pay 5% (IIRC) more to compensate them. Still, we never heard them complaining so much...
Nah, I'm not telling you that an algorithm could find the main melody of a known tune if you gave it the chords, just that it could find several "easy listening" melodies given a set of chords.
Aren't the mainstream pop music composers already using algorithms to make each song ? It surely sounds like they do ! I bet one could make a program that takes say 20 samples , indicate which one is supposed to be the drums, etc, and and have the program compose the song. Maybe it could compose the chant melody by recognizing actual chords in the samples, and applying known hamonic rules to end up with a melody to put on top of it... In fact I suppose some midi softs are already capable of doing scuh things.
All this mainstream crap is sooo predictible it makes me sick (I mean one could write down the totality of one of those songs just by listening to the first 20 seconds... Which is not the case with real music)
Why do people bitch and complain that the Matrix was too much gobbledygook (translation: they didn't understand, and hate movies that challenge them to think about it anywhere beyond the concession stand on their way out)
When will poople stop to look at Matrix like a sort of philosophical monument ? There is no intellectual challenge in matrix. It's just a flashy story that looks cool when mixed whith nice FX and all, there is no more to it. Sure, fans discuss endlessly about the why of this and that and what secrets and very clever explanations it gives to the plot, but they don't seem to realize (or don't want to) that it's just a plot full of holes that tries to look like a sort of very sophisticated riddle.
Makes me think to those Art "experts" who where given a piece of art from an unknown artist to analyze, and found all sorts of very sophisticated things to say about the drawing style, the philosophical ideas it contained, how the artist was a new genius and blah blah blah. Man, how dumb they looked all were they were explained that the artist was a 6 months old child with a box a crayola !
I think in some ways, Windows manages to out-Unix Unix. For example, I find Windows programs to be much more scriptable than their Unix counterparts.
Yes, but no.
Sure , you can script almost everything in windows using vbscript to hook various objects. But simple things are such a pain to do ! Writing a simple watchdog in vbcript can take hours of searching through MSDN, while the same thing takes about 5 minuts on unix.
For example try to do such a thing in vbscript: ssh unixprod "pg_dumpall |gzip" |gunzip >/opt/backup/postgres_daily_backup.dmp (If you wonder, it'll open an ssh connection to a machine named unixprod, ask postgresql to dump all bases to stdout, compress the stream , then decompress the stream on the other end and finally redirect it to a file).
Now i'm sure it can be done in vbscript, but how many time will it take ? Can you do it without sending a cleartext password through the network ? Plus the UNIX way is beautifull, I mean all those things in only one line...
For CCMs using editor applets in place of the standard textarea can be a solution. There are lots of them, and they also support html ~wysiwyg formatting...
Finally, Murphy's Law made the leap to non-technological domains, "if something can break, it will, in the worst possible way".
Yeah, but a tech person (should) still understand it as 'whatever the number of chances that this state can happen, if you don't check for it it will happen.' I always say this to my coworker, who each time looks at me and says that this particular state can't happen, since blah blah blah... sigh... Each time, the case definiltely happens, one day or another. Can be pretty fustrating when you try to debug the things months after and spend hours looking for the damn bug !
Just like after the World trade center attack nearly all US citizens are ready to take down the whole world because a few american died in a terrorrist attack. Never mind the fact that when this type of things happens in other countries it hardly makes the headlines... But since US spoiled citizens think this is not tolerable that a few terrorits dare to attack THEM let's bomb a few countries and kill hundreds of innocents just to feel better about it. Ahhhhhh justice, at least
Disclaimer: Of course I can understand the pain caused to the victims and their famillies by the september attack. What I can't understand is the reaction of the country.
Now, mod me down !
I am the only one to wonder what RMS was doing during all those days of SCO FUD ? I mean i don't agree with all the things he says, but to me he has the key role of the gardian of the door, the "You shall not pass" man, damnit. So I expect him to defend the GPL, and not only with words...
Now I'll admit he can have some vacations like everybody , heh. Must be pretty tiring to be a full-time RMS;)
Maybe I sounded like that but it wasn't intended. I think i *really* know what I'm talking about here, because i'm one of those ppl. I don't like myself, i've been the one-who everyone-laughs-about, I've taken abusive amounts of nearly all existing drugs on earth to "heal me", have a sort of morbid fascination for solitude and auto descruction. What I meant is that you there is always something you can do about your own life to make it better. Too many ppl just give up and seems to think "that's the way it is, can't do anything about it". They lie to themselves, they give themselves excuses. I mean often I do silly things that could be bad for me, but i don't say to myself "well you're a poor guy who has no chance, it's normal for you to do that". I know that i've been an asshole with myself and hate myself for that. Then i try to do something about it...
Of course what I was talking about in the previous post is the type of players who merely exchange their real life with a fake one. I see nothing bad with playing a few hours a day as long as it doesn't become more important than real things...
Because in the end, you might enjoy having real memories to think of, whatever it is.
And please note that I don't blame anyone, I just try to express my point of view with bad english
Nah... Sorry but i think the type of people you talk about have a *real* problem and pretending to be someone else in an onlie game certainly isn't the good solution to resolve this problem.
The problem of those people generally is one of those :
they don't like themselves
nobody likes them
they find their life not interesting, or disappointing
Whatever it is, there are always better things to do than pretending to be someone else. Learn new things ! It opens the mind, free it from its barriers, can totally change the way you see your life. For example learning to express feelings by playing music can be a real liberator from stress, anger, whatever. It can feel like the music you produce is the direct expression of your soul, and there's nothing more liberating than letting your soul speak without any barriers, not even words. Of course there are plenty of others things to learn, there are so many that could help those people to have a better life that it's really a pity to spend a whole life sitting in front of a computer.
(Oh, and what's wrong with being elitist, anyway? When you know just how good things can be, doesn't having to use crap give you pain, whether it's Windows software, web sites, browsers, closed-source software, proprietary data formats, low-quality audio, or whatever? We can all get rabid about something...)
The problem is not about being elitist in your choices of software, it's about being a jerk with other peoples who aren't as elit as you think you are ("you use windoze, you just can't understand"). And note that generally those el33t people don't even really understand the technologies they're so proud of. They just happened to read so many times on/. that x is cool because it has y and z that they repeat what they learnt without understanding it; They just know it's the thing to say to sound cool and l33T. The problem is, there are some many of those now that they're feading themselves, learning things that they think came from a guru but that in fact was written by another clueless l33t ppl (who has more experience and learnt how to sound like a guru...)
